Rating: Summary: It's the only diet that ever worked. Review: I am not morbidly obese (never have been), but have carried extra pounds for my entire adult life. I was on Weight Watchers for a year, and only managed to lose 4 pounds. Why? Because they stress grains. With Atkins, you purge yourself of grains and refined sugar (in response to those who say that they don't feel well when they do it, this is an indication that you were addicted, and addiction of any kind is not good) and the weight just melts away. For the doubters -- take a good look at the health of this country since the Low-Fat Police have been in charge. Obesity is rampant. We are seeing more and more diabetics -- including children. And people are still dying of heart attacks due to high cholesterol. If the fat is what kills you, then why are these things happening? Anyone who took high school biology knows that starch turns to sugar in your system. Since this is the case, why in the world would you load up on starch? I'd lost a lot of weight on the Atkins plan over the years, and always gained it back when I went back to my old ways. Not this time. Once you get rid of the cravings, carbs don't taste the same. I look at cakes and cookies and pretzels and have absolutely no desire to try them. The proliferation of low-carb foods in the marketplace makes the lifestyle even easier to adhere to. I'm just glad Dr. Atkins was able to see that his plan was gaining acceptance before his death. Rest in Peace Dr. Atkins. Millions of grateful people are indebted to you.
Rating: Summary: Good book, effective diet Review: ... Actually there isn't any research indicating this diet is dangerous, though there's not really any research on the long term effects of the diet at all. A study just published in the The Journal of the American Medical Association found no evidence of risks, but suggested the weight loss was merely the result of reduced calorie intact. That's not consistant with my own experience -I'm on the diet and have lost 28 lbs, and my calorie intact isn't exactly scanty. Hopefully, future studies already in the works will shed more light on all this. As for the book, I found New Diet Revolution to be quite readable and interesting. And I know others that have had very positive results with this diet.
Rating: Summary: Ironic Review: Isn't ironic that Mr. Atkins spent all these years not treating himself to carbs and worrying about the perfect diet and in the end, did it really matter? Do you think he died fulfilled. Or maybe alittle pissed off that he didn't have that really generous serving of birthday cake and ice cream. He died from a head injury that no one could have prevented or even known about. May he rest in peace. I think that this diet is completely unrealistic. You want to make sure that you can still enjoy the foods you like. We are only here once, we might as well have the things we want, but of course in moderation. Weight Loss comes from smaller portions, more fruits and vegetables, and exercise. You don't have to eat heart disease causing foods to lose weight. So overall this diet was not for me. Something more along Weight Watchers is better. I still get to have cookies if I want them. Of course I can only have 3 rather than the whole box. Its still nice to know that I can have them if I want them. This diet may work for someone who is not a carb addict. But me I love my carbs. PASTA FOREVER
Rating: Summary: Easy to follow and inexpensive Diet! Review: The only other diet that can compare to this one is from Herbalife. But unfortunately the later one is [more money]. On this diet there are no special products to buy and be forced to buy for life. No special pills, just regular vitamins. No needles injections and no ... gimmick to buy. The only products you need on this diet are at the supermarket, pharmacy and this inexpensive book. Now the easy side. There is no counting, measuring or whatever else the other diets need you to do. None of the [stuff] that makes you feel like you're on a diet. It's been almost 5 years and none of those 50 pounds have come back. Thank you Dr. Atkins! If it weren't for your book and wisdom I'd be probably needing insulin injections by now!
Rating: Summary: Eating Like This Is What Made Me Gain Weight to Begin With! Review: I thought I'd try this diet, until I researched it and discovered this was exactly how I had been eating when I gained weight.....HIGH fat and HIGH protein: Steak, eggs, cheese, bacon, sausage, pot roast....my six favorite foods, which apparently Dr. Atkins finds nothing wrong with. My body begs to differ. After going on a LOW fat and HIGH HIGH HIGH complex carbohydrate diet (no refined sugar or flour, but all the fruit and veggies...even and ESPECIALLY starchy veggies...I want) I have been averaging a pound a day weight loss, with increased energy and decreased depression. No cravings, no hunger pains, because I can eat, eat, eat all the time. My colesterol is lower, I've lost 38 pounds in 38 days, and my body is shedding fat in record time. The carbs are NOT being turned into fat, and my diet is BALANCED, not skewed toward fats, which got me into this condition to begin with. I'm glad it works for so many others, but have to wonder, how long has it been out there, and what if there are repercussions for these dieters further down the line? Even Weight Watchers (which I personally do not care for) seems to have a more balanced way of looking at meals. My arteries are clogging just thinking of all the fat in Dr. Atkin's foods. And I cringe thinking I might not ever have been allowed apples, bananas, milk, corn, potatoes, lima beans, peas, bread, pasta......some of the very best diet foods I've ever tried. Filled with complex carbs, fat free or low in fat, and VERY filling. Tastes GOOD, too! I guess I'm one of the 10% The Atkin's Diet doesn't work for! Dr. Atkin's "diet" made me fat, and I didn't even know at the time I was on it!
Rating: Summary: It works! Review: Great, amazing book - Dr. Atkins was truly a visionary, and I'm saddened that he is no longer with us. I hope his legacy and visions are perpetuated. Atkins really did change my life! The first 2 weeks were easy, then I felt like something was missing...uh, wild guess: Carbs? Yep, my Steak and Steamed veggies and cheese dinners became boring, my bacon and eggs and cheese breakfasts were lacking. With the additional help of Locarbizi in Los Angeles, I was finally able to experience success! Atkins, coupled with Locarbizi's exceptional low-carb bread and dessert products (and they deliver locally) make this way of life soooo much easier! Good luck to all of my fellow low-carbers
Rating: Summary: I've lost... Review: 15lbs a month safely, and I'm more healthy than I have been in years. Cholesterol and BP are better. This diet is easier than the rest, the best for eating out at restaurants, and you're not starving yourself. Current headlines may say its because you eat less calories, but that is irrelevant. You eat a good amount so you are not hungry, and you lose weight. Can't be better than that. Oh, and that safediets.org? They're promoting their own vegetarian diet of course.
Rating: Summary: Doctor is dead Review: Dr. Atkins died on April 17th, 2003. He suffered a severe head injury April 8 after falling on an icy sidewalk while walking to work. This doesn't reflect on his nutritional advice which is sound and has helped sell a lot of books.
Rating: Summary: Works, but at a cost Review: I've been on Atkins 3 times over the years, but for no longer than 2 weeks. That is, until I had a baby and needed to lose quite a bit. So, I was on it for a month this time (induction). I felt HORRIBLE! I had a headache until I quit the diet. I had muscle cramps, was lethargic and just didn't feel well. Working out, which I ususally love, was such a chore! I asked those experienced with Atkins why this was happening. They said it was normal for induction--uh, red flag! That I may be low in potassium, uh, yup, another red flag. And this is supposed to be a healthy diet--I think not! I know that the maintenance portion of the diet allows much more choice, but still doesn't come near what a person needs from fruits and veggies. How anyone can make this a lifestyle is beyond me. But, hey, I digress. Different strokes for different folks. I switched to The Zone, didn't gain the weight I lost from Atkins back and I LOVE THE ZONE!!! I have no hunger, no cravings and tons of energy. I eat constantly (3 meals, 2 snacks). Now, this is a lifestyle! I'd suggest "Mastering the Zone" and to stay clear from Atkins. By the way, if you read "Mastering the Zone", it's VERY simple and easy to follow.
Rating: Summary: It's diet is really very simple. Review: It's diet is really very simple. Your blood pressure drops considerably, your good cholesterol goes up, your bad cholesterol goes down, your blood sugar stabilizes. The proof is in the blood test. Don't take anyone's advice, just invest two weeks of your life in this diet and see how it makes you feel. If you want proof that it works, get the blood tests done as the book suggests. And get your blood pressure checked. Numbers do not lie. I also use neurosync and mime behavior modification to motivate myself to exercise and stay on this diet. I was an overweight diabetic, now all my blood tests are normal after I lost almost 50 pounds. I still try to eat lean meats, low fat cheeses and green vegetables.
