Rating: Summary: This really works!! Review: I was very apprehensive about this diet, but reading the book only encouraged me. I started the diet July 1, 1996 and by September had gone down 2 sizes!! No more low blood sugar problems, a tremendous increase in energy, and no food cravings are just a few of the benefits. I have kept most of it off, and plan on redoing it very soon. It seems to "love my body" and I feel terrific while on it.
Rating: Summary: Good idea, but can you swallow it? Review: I was excited when I began this diet. As a Bio student I knew that the theory had merit. I threw out everything high-carb and munched on eggs, meat, bacon, and the occasional salad. The macademia nuts were an added bonus! I expected the first few days to be shaky as my body burned up its store carbos (glycogen). I don't feel, however, that Dr. Atkins prepared some of us for the worst side-effect- crippling nauseau! After three days I couldn't possible choke down another egg or slice of bacon. Imagine being able to eat all the cream cheese you want, but no bagel! To combat this I made some protein bread from the book's recipe. This was quite possibly the foulest thing I have ever forced down. It had the consistency of a sponge. And long after the mayo, bacon, and tomato had been swallowed, I was still trying to break it up. It's not worth it. My roommate and I had some Ben and Jerry's and I felt fantastic this morning. I'm going back to fruit and yogurt and mountain biking. It worked for me once, and I can now admit that I gained my weight back because I eat Doritoes everyday, started smoking, and my bike now gathers dust. I hope Dr. Atkin's diet works for everyone else who tries it, they are made of sterner stuff than I. Waiter, pass the pasta!
Rating: Summary: The diet works, but the book is thin on practical details Review: My husband and I have tried this diet now for one week. It really works. I've lost five pounds and he's lost 11. I intend to stay with it -- it's definitely do-able.The book is a helpful introduction but it's a little thin on practical advice and menu plans that will carry you through for many weeks. I've scrambled to begin adapting recipes on my own, for lack of a better alternative. I also bought his recipe book, and hope that this helps. It would have been nice if the book had been organized to take you step by step through the phases of the diet (and specifically what you can and cannot eat in each phase, rather than just general explanations) SO, the diet gets five stars, the book only three. (Plus, his shameless self promotional tone in the book was an annoyance and made me wonder if I was being taken in by another diet fad.Dr Atkins may have done himself an disservice here.)
Rating: Summary: So Far, So Good Review: I have been on this diet for two weeks and I have lost 6 lbs. I hope to lose another 10 to 12 lbs. to reach my goal. I never before had heard of a diet where one didn't have to monitor every calorie they consumed; so this diet is a first for me where fat is not a no-no. I am satisfied that I am losing weight at a safe and sane rate, however, I am concerned about the long-term effects of a high-fat diet. Since I have cut back on carbos, however, I have noticed some amazing results (other than weight loss). I no longer have acid reflux and heartburn; I no longer suffer from insomnia; I no longer have frequent headaches; constipation is not a problem now; I have more energy and feeling of well-being than I've had in years! I believe that I possibly was suffering from hyperinsulinism and I previously never felt quite "well." I now feel better than I have in years. So maybe there is something to this diet. When I reach my weight-loss goal I hope I can maintain that new weight successfully. If I can, that will be proof that the diet totally works for me. Other diets and diet products have not successfully helped me achieve the maintenance I desire. I work out at least 4 times a week and am a normally active 53 yr. old woman. I was a "carbo junkie" and gained 15 lbs. in 2 years as a result. I mistakenly thought a high-carbo diet was good for me. Also, I was always hungry and suffered all of the ill effects I mentioned above. Now on the high protein diet, I rarely have hunger pangs and I don't snack between meals. This I like! I will write another evaluation when I have reached my weight loss goal and have maintained the new weight for at least one year. We'll see if that happens......
Rating: Summary: I lost 25 pounds in two months First diet that really worked Review: The book is sometimes confusing and unclear, but the content actually works.I started diet in February and lost 15 pounds. I went off diet, back on, off and back on. Lost a total of 25 pounds. The hardest part of the diet is convincing my spouse what foods I can eat and what I cant eat. The first three days of the diet are hard for me. I feel sluggish and tired. But once I get use to it, the enery returns. I hit a four day stretch where I lost two pounds a day. I am not in the health profession and I don't know about long term on this diet, but for quick, rapid weight loss, this one works for me. I am 40 years old and haven't been this light since I was 25.
Rating: Summary: A perfectly wonderful diet. Review: I went on Dr. Atkin's diet a year ago and lost 20 lbs. pretty quickly. I also suffered from migraine/stress/sinus headaches ALL THE TIME, but my headaches all but disapeared when I started this diet! I believe my headaches were a product of food alergies, but since I'm on a HMO, I can't seem to get anyone to agree to test me for food alergies. Anyway, if you're having trouble with sugar cravings, take chromium picolinate (I think Dr. Atkins recommends 600 mcg per day.) It took away ALL of my sugar cravings! Thank you Dr. Atkins! I'm now skinny and headache-free!
Rating: Summary: Works for me! Review: Never in my life have I been able to lose 10 pounds in just l2 days like I have on Dr. Atkins diet. This diet is an absolute God-send. I'm not one who diets much (as I didn't have much to lose)- I just figured that I'd probably stay about 10 pounds overweight because that's what happens when you get older. (I'm 39). Not so!! In 12 days I lost 10 lbs and 3 inches from my waist. This is a diet I feel I can live with. Easily. The food is delicious & plentiful. My energy level has skyrocketed (which is good having little ones around!) And I just plain feel & look great! I highly recommend to anyone reading this to give Dr. Atkins diet the 14 day try. (You'll be convinced after a week!) :-) As supplemental reading, "Protein Power" by Dr & Dr Eades is great too. But I prefer the Atkins diet. The Eades plan is a bit too complicated for my taste. But some great reading nonetheless. Good luck!
Rating: Summary: Not as good as Protein Power. Review: If you browse the other reviews, most are written by people who are looking for a quick fix to lose weight (typical Americans). If you're looking for a healthy way to eat for life to avoid the diseases of our unhealthy society (i.e., heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, etc.) then this is a good book. If you want more 'science' and less fluff, read Protein Power, it's a much better book and gives reasons for suggestions that are grounded in basic biochemistry and on empirical evidence. Atkins' book is not bad, especially if you read it after some of the other low-carb books, but it's only a "supplement" to the others. It's arranged sort of haphazardly too... I approached all of these low-carb books with apprehension at first, but the basic science is sound and I have been extremely let down with the low-fat diet that our society has decided to embrace. I lost about 15 or 20 pounds of muscle (not fat) over the last few years on our society's low-fat (hence, low protein) high-carb diet. I've already begun gaining back muscle mass and losing a bit of the fat that I had accumulated over the last few years. Buy Protein Power, read it, then try the others like Atkins.
Rating: Summary: Forget This fad! Review: I guess one sure fire way to become rich in America is to write a new diet book. It's amazing how many new ones come out every year. The fact that these books sell is a testament that americans still want a quick fix to their weight/health problems. Lets face the facts, their is no cure all solution. All these new diet books do is put a different spin on calorie reduction, some books reduce carbs some reduce protein. I went through a period were I read a lot of health/Diet books, the amount of conflicting information will drive you crazy. I think it all boils down to moderation.(not an original idea) Exercise, eat a lot of fruits and veggies watch your fat intake and save your money on any more diet books.
Rating: Summary: Good diet, bad read Review: I felt the book was very poorly written, yet informative if that makes sense. It just reads unorganized. The diet is great though. I have lost eight pounds the firt week and can't believe it! I feel wonderful to boot. I was getting worried that it was too good to be true so I did some research.END
