Summary: I now love my scale
Review: I have been on the Atkin's diet for a month now, and have lost 19 pounds. I started out at 250 pds. (I'm 5'5), so obviously I have a lot more weight to lose. I have been eating two salads plus a serving of veggies a day for the entire month, and am now starting to add a serving of fruit as well. There has been a lot said about how unhealthy this diet is, but truthfully, I am eating more vegetables and fruits now than I ever have. Also, I usually eat chicken or lean beef for lunch and dinner, so the fat content doesn't have to be skyhigh either. I do have one complaint -- I am so sick of eggs for breakfast! What are others eating? For snacks, sugar free jello, and sugar free popsicles (3g carbo each) are good. Had bad headaches the first two days -- I think from caffeine withdrawal. I am confused about the whole vitamin issue -- I don't think the book explains it well enough. For now I am taking a multivitamin daily. I definitely recommend this book!

Summary: Dr. Atkins is NOT a quack, but your doctor might be.
Review: I must admit, I was skeptical. But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try it. I had lost weight 15 years ago on a low-carbohydrate diet. I put it all (plus more) back on while eating a low-fat diet. My mom and aunt are both insulin-dependent diabetics. My total cholesterol had been borderline and my cholesterol ratios had been bad for several years. I suffered from Chronic Fatigue for 5 years. What did I have to lose? So far, 11 pounds, several cholesterol points, and the chronic fatigue.. It's been 11 weeks now since I started the Atkins diet and I FEEL BETTER. I have enough energy now to exercise 4 times a week without excuses, my cholesterol has dropped and my ratios are excellent. People I work with as well as family have commented on how much better I look, and not simply due to weight loss. They tell me I even LOOK healthier. My internist has told me, "Keep doing whatever you're doing." Eleven pounds in 11 weeks doesn't sound astonishing; it sounds healthy. This diet may not be for everyone, but thank goodness, it's for me--

Summary: It really works!!!
Review: Contrary to popular belief ketosis is not a dangerous condition. It is very common in people who exercise strenuously. The idea is that ketosis is caused when you are burning fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. I have been on the Atkins plan for 3 months and have never felt better in my life. I don't have any problem with brain function or "brain fog". I have lost 30 pounds and full expect to be on some version of this plan for the rest of my life. I no longer have the blood sugar swings or out of control appetite caused by too many carbs in my diet. Anyone who is severely overweight us usually hyperinsulinemic and needs to limit carb intake to control this. There are now several versions of this Way OF Eating on the market. However, Dr Atkins has been doing this for 25 years successfully. Also, he has been treating heart patients with the diet with dramatic results. Definitely a must read for anyone interested in being well for the rest of their lives.

Summary: Limited menu but quick weight/inches loss.
Review: I have been on this diet for three months, and have lost over 45 lbs. It has really been effortless, and the weight loss is so noticeable that you can literally see the difference almost daily. I don't leave home without my water bottle, and have also been faithful to the vitamin supplements. I found the Atkins'brand to be expensive, so did some checking and was able to find several almost as good. I have a much higher energy level as well as a much more pleasant disposition. I have never been hungry. I do notice that bad breath does seem to be a problem . I was able to find some sugarless , 0 carb. breath mints that help. I am going to Italy the first two weeks in Dec, and worry about how much if any I can deviate without weight gain. Reader comments appreciated. seassmith@webtv.net

Summary: I love the Atkins diet... it's amazing
Review: I'm not an overweight person... just someone who is always trying to loose 5-10 pounds to be at my ideal weight. I started the induction diet 5 days ago and have lost 5 pounds so far. The easiest 5 pounds I've ever lost! Great food, even shopping for the high protein foods without worrying about the fat contact was so fun-- i've always avoided foods such as bacon, cheese & steak for years and felt guilty eating them. This diet is a pleasure and i'm so impressed by the fast results.

Summary: This book has changed my attitude about food and my life.
Review: I can't believe it! I started this diet and within 5 days I had lost 7 pounds. I have now been on it for 3 weeks and have lost15 total pounds. I am 43 and nothing has been working for me in the past 3 years. I have 80 more pounds to go and I can't wait. I feel 110% better, I sleep better and I have more energy than my 16 year old daughter. Thanks Dr. Atkins - you have made food and life more enjoyable again.

Review: Dr Atkins Pro, Dr Atkins Con? Protein or Carbohydrates? Balanced Diets? Who do you believe?I HAVE LOST OVER 48 POUNDS AND 6 INCHES OFF MY WAIST--WITH IMPROVED ENERGY ANDVITALITY. The Protein Diet is the onlyprogram that helped me to retain muscle and therefore lean tissue while losing fat.Carbohydrates make you FAT! Pure and simple. Another point. People should throw their scales away and check their body's fat composition by taking photographs and going to a health club and checking their fat percentage. With programs like Atkins or any good protein diet, leantissue is preserved or even increasedwhile fat is lost. As muscle weighs more than fat, the scale will probably show aincrease in weight--while you lose fat!I used to work in a hospital here in Pa.Dieticians were always handing me "sensible" diets and menues. I did loseweight. I also lost energy, muscle in all of the wrong places and lost strength--I was an avid powerlifter. With the protein/low carb program, I lost fat, all in the right places. Mybody fat percentage fell substantiallyand I didn't lose any strength or energyfor my workouts!The higher carbohydrate diets left mestringy with energy swings and carbohydrate cravings.Supplements are also vital for results!A good multi Vitamin/Mineral especially high in B-Complex, especially B6, Chromium Picolinate, Kelp, Cider Vinegarand Lecithin and essential oils can speed results while balancing nutrition.Protein foods should be from the best biologically high protein sources suchas EGGS, BEEF and most meats and fish in general. Tuna is high in protein but isa low biological source--it doesn't contain all of the essential amino acidsso it should be combined with anotherprotein source i.e. eggs.Speaking of eggs, Arnold Schwarzenneggaronce told a group of us while he was training for the Mr Olympia Contest (s)he would eat up to 36 eggs per day andhis cholesterol whch he had checked regularly was UNCHANGED!I eat 4 or more eggs per day, 4 per serving along with a lot of steaks, chops, hamburgers (no bun) and othersupposedly high cholesterol, arteryclogging foods and have no cholesterolor high blood pressure problems.I have used the high protein/low-zerocarb regimen since 1972 and have hadNO PROBLEMS- Just Great Results as haveeveryone else who has applied and stayed with the program.The only time I have a problem is when Igo back on Carbs! Although there may be scientific information to back up the high carb/lowprotein diet, I believe the best laboratory is the human body. Try bothand see the results! I promise, you won't want to be a carboholic anymore! Not if you want to lose fat, that is!

Summary: Excellent concept but potentially dangerous.
Review: I have read a number of books that deal with the same sort of concept, including Sugar Busters and Protein Power. While they are all different, they share one thing in common, and that is a carbohydrate restriction. What is different about Atkins is that the carb restriction is so great that one looks to artificially flavored drinks and desserts for some sort of taste. The problem is that the main artificial sweetener used today is aspartame. While I may have lost a lot of weight on this diet, I also suffered serious consequences from the excitoxic properties of aspartame. Anyone with a history of anxiety disorders, or anyone who has used an SSRI (you know if you are one) in the past should NOT use aspartame products unless they want to exacerbate their condition. As a supplement to this book, anyone who is going to try this should read Excitoxins: The taste that kills (can't recall the author). The Atkins diet is great. It gives you more energy and makes you look better. But I urge you to stay away from the artificial sweeteners; especially aspartame. For evidence, please see the above-mentioned book.

Summary: Atkins Diet veteran of 2+ years
Review: We started this diet over 2 years ago. During the first six months I lost 50 pounds (going from a size 16 to a size 6) and watched my high blood pressure drop, my cholestrol drop, the ratio of cholesterols improve, my crippling heartburn vanish, my energy levels increase and remain steady and my triglyceride vanish into the basement.

My doctor leaves odes to my bloodwork on the voice mail now - instead of dire threats of medication. I actually LIKE shopping for clothes and own a swimming suit.

More importantly - this book was written with the scientific and medical rigor that convinced us it was based in solid medical reality - NOT in politically/economically motivated medical/pharaceutical agendas which pass for "modern medical wisdom."

It has been a long-term success for both myself and my partner. I'm sure there are metabolisms out there which are not compatible with the diet - but the majority of people I have introduced it to have found unmitigated success if they have the will-power to last the first hard weeks.

The book sold me on trying the diet - the results of the diet sold me on the book.
