Summary: Dr. Atkins courageous revelations about dieting
Review: In our society, the medical community has historically doted on the "low fat" approach to dieting and pointed doggedly to the Basic Food Groups theory, and more recently the "Food Pyramid". Dr. Atkins has the courage to turn this industry on it's ear and discuss what really causes most of the obesity in today's diets. I read this book in the span of a day, and within 5 weeks shed 25 pounds. Not only is the weight dropping off naturally, but my energy level is gradually increasing as well. If you've tried pills, exercise gadgets and videos, or any of the "name brand" weight loss clinics, with marginal success (only to regain the weight) READ THIS BOOK! Make the investment in your mind and learn to rethink the way you eat and the types and contents of the foods you ingest. You really can lose that weight and keep it off while eating very well. GOOD LUCK READER!

Summary: This diet works!
Review: Although the book is rather hard to read, it has some rather good points about why the diet works. For me getting over the caffeine was the hardest part of the induction diet, but I don't have the cravings I used to have when I drank it. All in all I would recommend getting the book, so you have all the information you need to get started on this diet. Good luck!

Summary: An exciting book based on incomplete science.
Review: A few people from my went on this diet several months ago so I borrowed the book and read a few chapters. It is very engrossing because its claims seem to go against logic and the common wisdom, and also because it suggest you can lose a massive amount of weight quickly from simply not eating carbohydrates (or a very minimal amount) and instead eating mainly protein and fat, with perhaps a bit of leafy greens mixed in. I think Atkins has something valid to say about carbohydrates - at least simple, unrefined ones like sugar, white bread, pretzels, bagels, etc. I have heard this before from diet book authors that I respect like Merkin and Ornish. However, their position is that in order to lose weight healthfully, you don't just stop eating carbohydrates period (or eat trace amounts), but eat ones that are high in fiber, such as beans, whole grains, and vegetables. There are a bizillion studies out there which show that this kind of diet is incredibly healthy for you, reduces all kinds of risk factors, and helps you lose and keep off weight. In effect, if you eat a carbohydrate that is 50% fiber, you can subtract that entire 50% when counting your carb intake for the day. This is because fiber either passes right through you without being digested, or it is absorbed into the blood but is entirely beneficial. Unfortunately Atkins never mentions fiber and despite mentioning a few studies from the 50's and 60's, does not back up his data with anything recent. Diets that are high in protein have the added risk of causing calcium depletion and kidney problems because they are high in nitrogenous compounds which cause your kidneys to work extra hard to get rid of them. These types of diets are also diuretic, which indicates that the vast amount of weight-loss that Atkins claims is due primarily to water loss, even though he denies it. Atkins gets you psyched up about the evil AMA which is out to promote its low-fat, high-carb agenda and refuses to listen to anything which contradicts this, and even goes as far as to support studies which are obviously flawed. Yet Atkins never discusses why there is such an agenda. Could there be a conspiracy between the AMA and the food companies which make low-fat/no-fat foods? Many people have success with this diet, so to each his own, but if you don't like having meat as your main course or only course every meal of the week, and you aren't significantly overweight, I would skip this thing and go with a diet that's more balanced. The fact that you can supposedly lose 10 lbs a week on the Atkins diet for several weeks in a row may seem enticing if you are that overweight, but it also sounds like an unhealthfully rapid pace.

Summary: WORKED FOR ME AND I FEEL GREAT!
Review: I read some of the comments about the Atkins diet book. One said this was something new and a fad and will die out just like all the rest. Obviously he/she did not read the book or do any research. Dr. Atkins devised this new way of eating over 25 years ago! It's just the all low-fat people shot him down because it was a big money thing. Atkins diet will not cost you any extra money and it works! All my life I have been trying different plans, and if you all are anything like me, probably spent quite a lot of money on them too. I sure did not lose any energy, can't really say I've gained a bunch, but certainly did not lose any and lost 25-30 pounds and more importantly to me 4-5 inches around my waist alone!!!!

TRY IT!

Summary: This book was the answer to my prayers.
Review: I have gained weight steadily through my adult years, despite low fat diets and other commercial programs. Now I know why they did not work for me and more importantly what to do about my weight. I've lost 40 lbs in 10 weeks without being hungry.

Summary: Great book; scientifically-sound diet!
Review: The book was an easy read; very clear on what is advised and what is restricted. Atkins diet is more restrictive than others, such as protein power and sugar-busters, but the induction period is necessary to get people quickly and safely into the fat-burning, cholesterol-lowering state. For those who are skeptical about the soundness of this diet, try it for two-weeks. You'll feel better. I didn't originally try this diet to lose weight; I found myself hungry ALL THE TIME...I was eating 6-7 meals a day, all carbo fixes, like chocolate and cookies and fries. I used to eat right before bed; a bagel with cream cheese or a big bowl of ice-cream just to satisfy the hunger. Now I no longer feel hungry as easily. The meat and cheeses really fill me up for a good few hours, and I can easily last until the next meal.

Summary: worked for everyone I know that tried it
Review: I know several people that have lost weight seemingly effortlessly on the Atkins diet. I have only been on it for 2 weeks since I got the book. Weight loss is going slowly for me. The book doesn't mention what to do in this situation. Any menu suggestions for a variety and/or tips to speed up the weight loss would be appreciated.

Summary: 37 Year old male finds College body and wife is thrilled!!
Review: My story is a tale first of losing two "battles" a lot of 37 year old men suffer from...with long hours at the J.O.B. and the "Married" syndrome. (Not anyone elses fault but my own, but caused because I simply ate the wrong stuff for a long time.. and after a while, it all just added up... all 40-50 lbs of it.) My Doctor recomended this book, (Yes, he said it does work too, as a lot of his patients can attest. He said if you stick with it, and do not cheat one iota, you will lose weight on this.) My review of this book fits nicely with the first of several beginning chapters in this book. I tried eveything working out, watching what I ate, even going to places like Weight Watchers, Slimfast, etc... all which were humiliating and didn't work (afterall if you can't eat their pre-packaged food like a slave everyday, you can't get any results right??)Even looking at our govn'ts Idea of what we should eat, and aerobics. Wrong, didn't work, and left what was once a healthy active guy "feeling" like a loser and depressed. So what happened? I really have not cheated at all on this diet, and began simply walking 4-5 times a week 1 mile to 2 miles... and followed what I should be eating in this book, nothing more. SIMPLY FOLLOW THE BOOK, DO NOT CHEAT, and you too, can get back to the younger self you were when you were young and feeling alive. Or always dreamed you would be. Everthing you need to know is in the book. And you even get it at a great price lower than any traditional bookstore here, with less a hassle. (btw, it's the cheapest on Amazon.com too!!!)Start your new year off with a new you. Whats really great is that my mom who has been battling her weight for a lot longer time than I have, has started this too. It's as simple as the old line... if you do not have your health, you can't enjoy everything else in life. Trust this book and get your life back. I now know I am the husband my wife deserves, healthy, full of energy, and she is excited to be with the new me and our future... I can't wait to finally fit in some great clothes this spring and finally be glad to show off this new body on the beach with my beautiful wife. (She has always been skinny and loving me anyway I was before, but she really is having a good time looking and being a lot closer with me now. P.S. I'll let you figure that last line out. lol) All this by a diet? Yes, if you get your self respect back, yes. Thank you Dr. Atkins.

Summary: Diabetes? What diabetes!?
Review: This book is such a great read, I couldn't put it down. It makes so much sense, and the diet really works. The good doctor makes a good case for low carb/high fat dieting. From the day I began this diet, I noticed my daily blood glucose readings had fallen well into normal ranges. Although prescribed Micronase for my type II diabetes, I have not taken a pill since being on the diet. Don't need 'em. Also, even though I still eat like a horse (2800 to 3500 calories a day), I have steadily lost 27 pounds in 3 months. Even though I pig out, I continue to lose weight. And that's while consuming an average of 30 grams of carbs a day. I know if I cut back more on carbs and calories, and maybe get off my butt and exercise once in a while, I'd do a whole lot better. But, I feel good, and I like when people say, "Hey, you've lost weight." I hope to lose another 25 pounds to reach my goal. I figure in another 2 or 3 months I'll be there. Never hungry, and losing weight. How can you go wrong? On the negative side, I would KILL for a pizza!
