Rating: Summary: Things Your Parents May (or Should) Have Taught You. Review: Sometimes, one reads these books with a healthy dose of skepticism. After all, there is so much New Age pseudo wisdom and spiritual babble percolating throughout our culture that one can get lost in the clutter. Yes, we must all get in touch with our spiritual natures. Yes, we must all cultivate our sense of balance and proportion in our lives. Yes, we must all nurture our inner selves. HOWEVER, many of the books on the market discuss these things either in a hopelessly complicated way, or so superficially that the text may as well have been written on the back of a cocktail napkin. THE FOUR AGREEMENTS, happily, strikes the perfect balance between style and substance, providing thought provoking ideas in a simple contemplative format. In theory, the agreements are simple. Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. This book however, provides the framework in which someone might put these simple truths into action. The book is fairly short and I would recommend taking a few hours to read it from cover to cover. Then, re-read the text. The thoughts and ideas generated in your own mind will more than compensate for the modest investment in time.
Rating: Summary: The Essence of Carlos Castaneda in a simple book Review: This is an excellent sampler of Toltec wisdom that also happens to condense into one book what Carlos Castaneda did in all of his books taken together (all that's missing are the use of energy passes). In fact, Ruiz captures the most important concepts toward the end: the ego as parasite. Castaneda called it the "foreign installation", but it's a crucial concept because the Four Agreements wears away at the parasite. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it if you don't want to explore Castaneda. (If you do, I recommend Journey to Ixtlan and Tales of Power. All of Ruiz is in these two books.)
Rating: Summary: the mystification of the obvious Review: As several others have written, the concept of the four agreements is sound, simple, and inherrently obvious to anyone who pays attention to the interactions with people in his/her own life. To take such and imbue it with wystical significance and market that "insight" for personal gain is intellectually and ethically reprehensible. I recommend, rather than buying this book, that the would be reader just walk about in his/her community and talk to people, learn to listen, and apply what he/she learns from this to the living of his/her own life. The four agreements are sound; the book is exploitation.
Rating: Summary: Simply, a life altering book Review: Since I've read this book, at least two dozens of my best friends got it as a gift. They ALL thanked me a lot! Read it and I am sure you'll do the same. For some, the beginning might be a little foggy ("what the hell is he talking about here?" type of thing.) But do NOT be discouraged. If you really find Chapter one a little bit weird, go to Chapter two. It will hit you then. Then, after reading through 2-5, go back to the beginning. This, I say, is a book that can really help us, in a so simple, yet powerful way, to create better lives, to have a better place to live in. Do yourselves a favor. Do your kids a favor. Get the book and read it once every three months. Let me know how it was!
Rating: Summary: Highly Recommended Review: Just check out the prayer at the end of the book. It says it all.
Rating: Summary: Amazing book Review: This is one of the most amazing books I ever read. This book has the magic of simplicity and power. This is the greatest book about how to run out of hell of the fear and run into a haven of love. The book explains Toltec wisdom in simple but powerful way.
Rating: Summary: The sweetness lingers . . . . . Review: The sweetness lingers, ..... even many days after I started reading another book. As if I have covered with a shield of golden chocolate (gold and chocolate being my 'first' love), a shield of thick dark strong chocolate further covered by 24K gold leaves. It seemed all common sense, but the words came so strongly, yet so sweetly, sometimes they came as a surprise, a very nice surprise. They linger as rain drops in a hot dry day, as rainbow on a cloudy day. GinYeechu@hotmail.com & ginyeec@touro.edu
Rating: Summary: Simple Review: If you are on the search for yourself, you might want to read this book as there may be some things that you may need to hear from this work. This is a simplistic draft of a few (four to be exact) agreements that one might benefit from making with oneself. I liked this book. I think that for the ease of reading it, one might get a lot out of the ideas expressed. Even though I hold different ideas about personal progress, I can suggest that possibly you may find the words in this book to be just what you need to hear. I have read quite a few books on self improvement, spirituality, and wisdom. I have consumed simple and complex writings in my own personal search. This is one of the simple writings. You will not find it heavy and overbearing, instead you will find it light and easy on the mind. The author will leave it up to you just exactly how to apply the ideas presented, which I believe is fitting--each individual is different and each application will vary likewise. These agreements may not be so easy to apply however, since many of us are conditioned to perform opposite of these agreements.
Rating: Summary: Part blather part pretty good Review: I was surprised by this little book. I found most of the stuff between the covers to be unnecessary, gleaning just the 4 agreements. I think this is good stuff for anybody to do on a daily basis. It can certainly help 'unclutter' your life. And it certainly isn't going to hurt. Basically just good sound advise most people ought to know anyway. To a lot of people this would be considered a 'woo woo' book.
Rating: Summary: New Age Made Simple: Core Beliefs That Work!! Review: This is a fabulous book which I hope is not taken too lightly. As a former trainer in Tony Robbins' Mastery University (1989-1995) I've seen thousands of people spend a lot of time and money trying desparately to improve their lives. But the most profound changes in people are created on the core belief level. Here's a book that addresses this level in a simple, truthful way. I hope that Mr. Robbins gets wind of this book (maybe he has) because his type of deep-level unconscious training must never deviate or contradict the principles derived from these "four agreements." For those of you who are not familiar with Tony Robbins let's just say that he's a very influencial person who does large-audience seminars designed to change people's lives. But anyone can change their lives for the better (quickly and economically) by making a serious study of this book. The value of "The Four Agreements" greatly exceeds the cost. Make sure it's in your personal library. It's a true gem!
