Rating: Summary: Good Message, but too simplistic for my tastes Review: I kept waiting for the pay off, reading page after page of how my parents and culture have shaped my world view, how I should be careful what I say because words can hurt, how I shouldn't take seriously the criticism of others, etc, etc. Sadly, there was nothing more to this book. I might recommend it, however, to young teens. The message and reading level seems focused at this age group. But, if you're a sophisticated young person or an adult, invest your time and dollars better in buying anything by Sydney Banks (The Missing Link is highly recommended), or Thich Hanh Nhat.
Rating: Summary: Simple but effective Review: Having owned this book for 6 months now I have found it to be close by for many readings. This is not a book I have shoved away in my book case! After meditating for some twenty years it bares comparison with the meditation proccess and discipline.Taking the four simple agreements and putting them in place in your own life can certainly make some changes to your own life. How much easier it is to just put people down and add to the negativiy of daily life that so many people in life seem to enjoy. I certainly didnt interpret from Miguel s writing that you lay down and take negativity or be pasive when if you do get punched!. I would imagine if you are in an abusive situation it would be more wise to leave than to react and as pointed out not take it personally and have it affect your emotional state getting you hooked up with the abusers negativity..Although these precepts are simple they are not that easy to put into day to day life .This can hold true with meditation where it can be very hard to keep meditating when we live in a noisy sometimes stressful and distracting world. Meditation is simple and the words of this book are simple but if taken into daily life they can be very powerful and effective tool for you own life.
Rating: Summary: Sigh of relief Review: Like coming home and kicking off a pair of high heels and feeling a warm, soft carpet between yor blissfully spreading toes, thats what this book is like. That sigh, that moment when you experience the relief of freedom. The Four Agreeements helps you see things in a different way--a way that makes perfect sense,--like when you work a puzzle piece this way & that, and then,---it fits! This book gives practical advice that will take you out of the hell that we so often send ourselfs into.
Rating: Summary: A great book Review: I would highly recommend this book to anyone in a heartbeat. It guides us on how we can transform ourselves to become more harmonious with ourselves and others. A real treat.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book with a very positive message. Review: I almost did not buy this book based on two reviews I read (a reader from Minneapolis and a reader from Philadelphia) I got the book anyway due to recommendations from friends. I find it very stimulating and transformative. I read the two negative reviews again and realized that these two reviewers had not even read fully read the book, so it makes sense to me how they had a negative reaction to the book. The ideas espoused here reflect truths set forth in different religions and philosophies, but they are presented in a way that is concise and crystal clear. The philosophy here is actually the same lore that is found in Carlos Castaneda's work. The book is a good companion book for the readings of Carlos Castaneda because it crystallizes the teachings of don Juan. It is not overly long, either, so it is easy to read. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Good, but don't confine yourself. Review: Miguel and Don have put together an excellent help guide, but remember that word guide. A guide leads you, you are capable of going places in time without that guide. The Toltec philosophy is in my opinion well supported and scientifically proven. The writers do bring that to light in a persuasive attempt to convince the reader, but I can deduce they have put this together in an honest write to contribute or help. The only thing I would warn is that we cannot allow ourselves to be confined to limited guidlines. A super book that also gives guidence, being multi dimensional, which I highly recommend reading is Karl Mark Maddox SB 1 or God
Rating: Summary: This book can change your life. Review: You can keep reading this book again and again and you will get more out of it each time. I think this is because the ideas and concepts apply to what is happening to you in your life at any given moment. I would recommend it to anyone who is open to thinking a little off the beaten path. This book can help expand your mind and improve your life.
Rating: Summary: does it get better? Review: I can see how shelf space is so valuable to Authors and Publishers. I was feeling like a bit of a pick me up and although I have not finished the book I am hoping to still retrieve some valuable information from it. When a book is plastered all over the book store you believe it has something to say. So far I have learned that your parents play a significant role in your value system, the religion that you are initially exposed to, and your name! And it took several pages to reiterate that. I do not look forward to going back to it but perhaps I will walk away with a bit of insight by the time I close the book?
Rating: Summary: Maybe you should stop reading and start applying.... Review: This is for those of you that dont seem to understand the concepts of this book by giving it a bad review. life is simple and so is truth. What works for one doesnt apply to all. Maybe you should stop reading and start applying. Besides, when was the last time someone punched you in the face for no reason?(ref. to another review)Do you understand the laws of Karma? There is a reason for everything even if we dont recognize it; It is like saying there are no holes in the ozone layer because you cant see them! I mean no disrespect but there is enough negativity in this world as it is. "if you cant say anything nice, dont say anything at all". People, please remember to listen to your heart, live by your own truth and do not let others dictate your path!
Rating: Summary: A Book About Transformation Review: The Four Agreements is a thoroughly enjoyable book. It defines very simply and clearly the possibility of transformation for human beings and lays out a simple course of action to bring about transformation. To varying degrees, we all grow up to accept the agreements of our society about the way the world is and how we are. Some of those agreements are erroneous and cause us pain. In order to be free of the pain, discover who we are and live a life of self-expression, we need to learn to choose agreements that support us. Mr. Ruiz presents the 4 agreements that are key to bringing about transformation. His presentation is gentle, powerful and encouraging. His message is clear: It is within our reach if we want it badly enough. If you are interested in transformation I suggest that you also read the wonderful book by Ariel and Shya Kane "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work". This book can be read as a perfect complement to The Four Agreements as it develops other principles of transformation that are not developed in Mr. Ruiz' book and also emphasizes the concept of AWARENESS as the key to transformation. Both books are a must read. They have had a big impact on my life and I keep them handy as powerful reminders that life doesn't have to be painful cross bearing experience that it can, in fact, be magical.
