Summary: Preachy & without a good foundation.
Review: Yes, this book contains some general practical advice, and for this I have allowed two stars. However, I was disappointed with his teaching and 'preachy' method in that it tells a person how to feel, but doesn't tell that person why he/she should feel a certain way. What I mean is this, the author tells the reader not to allow other people's words to hurt them. He says one should not take other's words seriously. (he's talking about criticism) However, what if that person who is doing the criticizing is right? For instance, what if it is a friend who cares about you and is pointing out dangerous beliefs or dangerous behavior? What if the criticism is true? The author gives to basis by which the reader can determine if the criticism is valid. That's a problem.

Yes, it's true that a person's parents shape one's worldview, because they do influence one's value system. That part is undeniable. However, it would have been very helpful if a chapter was included which would help a person determine if what he/she was taught by their parents is good and worthy of emulation or if it is bad and should be abandoned. Some objective criteria would be nice.

Now, lastly there is the issue of pride. The 'method' conveyed by Ruiz seems to be self-centered. Do we really raise our self-esteem through self-promotion and self-aggrandizement? What happened to raising self-esteem through serving and loving others? This is a subtle, but important distinction which is key to healthy relationships. Ruiz seems to ignore this.

Summary: I'm in agreement
Review: After reading several reviews on this book, I wondered if I shouuld even write a review. What can I possibly say that hasn't already said? But hey, that thought did not keep RUIZ from writing an entire book. (ha-ha)

I actually like this book. I agree that it did not hold any surprising revelations that completely altered my life. What it did do is provide a good reminder for ideas I should be practicing, but have been slacking on. Most people with any self-awareness probably try to practice these agreements. They are common ideas to any religion. Ruiz just worded things in a slightly different manner, providing a little freshness.

But for some reason, I rushed through this book. Yes, it's a light read, but was I looking for something meaty? Those who buy this type of book are usually on some type of spiritual quest. Having high expectations, looking for something profound that can solve all of life's problems is unreasonable. This little book was just a reiteration of a lot of common sense. But hey, with all the negativity in this world, I need that sometimes!

Summary: Drivel
Review: This book has very little to say and spends a lot of time saying it. It is vague and wanders. If you like a book where you can derive any meaning you desire, this is it. If you are feeling bad about yourself and are looking for an excuse to avoid personal responsibility, you will be able to find it here. If you feel in control of your life and you want guidance and, perhaps, inspiration, don't waste your time on this. I would have given this zero stars if I could - there is no redeeming value - although the cover is not unattractive.

Summary: Great book
Review: I have never heard of this book before or knew anything about Miguel Ruiz. Even though this is not the kind of books I usually read, I bought it since it was recommended by my therapist. To my surprise, I found the book pretty good and extremely helpful; I recommend it to any person who is looking for simplicity in their lives (vs. the complexity we so often create in most of our affairs and relationships). I think it could be a great book for those who are in a 12-Step recovery program.

Summary: A complete waste of time (at least it was a short book).
Review: This book manages to be both incredibly bland and infuriatingly trite. If the editors had removed all the repetitious drivel it would have been four pages long. It certainly does NOT "read in a voice you would expect from an indigenous shaman" unless you're easily persuaded by sophmoric attempts at parody. Either this is satire or the New Age industry has sunk to an all-time low.

Summary: Simplify your life!!
Review: Life is complicated! That is because we have learned to assume that is normal and have not been given the tools to simplify our lives. That is where this book comes in. By making four simple agreements with yourself and following these agreements life can become simpler and much less complicated. These four agreements are to be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions, and always do your best. Following these four agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz then teaches how Toltec laws can simplify our lives and how breaking old agreements that we were taught when we were young or have acquired over the years leads to personal freedom.

Summary: Loved It: Great Guideline For a Fulfilling Life
Review: You should definetely get it. It was so helpful that I sent it as a gift to two different friends and recommended it to nearly 50 other friends/family via Amazon's "Share The Love." The book was also very easy to read. Live life with passion! Edmond Torbati

Summary: Okay if you can wade through the existentialism
Review: There are many universal trues on the audio tape. This may be a better tool for someone who has had much difficulty in life than for someone simply looking to confirm or clarify life philosophy.

If "this life is only a dream" is down your alley then this book is for you. Otherwise, it can be existentialist to the point of being nauseating.

Summary: Great for those in recovery
Review: I found this book very readable and understandable. It's a wonderful book for those who are in a 12 Step recovery program. I highly recommend it.
