Summary: Rather superficial, and hard to read
Review: I was excited to find this book at my local bookstore, since I'm a fan of the reality show. Unfortunately the book proves to be very superficial, with tips of questionable quality and substance.

Five topics are covered: food, clothing, grooming, decoration, and culture. I was hoping to get some "insider" tips on how to color-match my wardrobe and how to pick out power ties for different vacations. Nope, neither topic is in there. Plus a lot of other tips I was hoping to get. Instead you get two pages on how to remove nose hair and some other equally useless stuff. And this book is expensive! A lot of information is not organized logically so it's hard to follow... at least for an artistically challenged person like myself.

Not recommended, although you could read it over coffee at your local bookstore.

Summary: Good for Anyone
Review: I'm a woman but I still love the Fab 5 and feel like I can learn a lot from them. Obviously I'll be skipping the grooming tips, but the cooking, home decor, etc can be applied to anyone. Great style is for everyone!

Summary: Funny, entertaining, and useful, just like the TV show!
Review: If you love the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy TV show, you will most likely love this book. There's an introduction from the creators of QE explaining how they came up with the show's concept and an intro from the Fab 5 talking about how they want to give people a "make-better" not a "makeover". What I really love about this book is you can tell the Fab 5 really wrote it themselves. As I read each of their sections, I could imagine Jai, Carson, Kyan, Thom, and Ted talking because they use the same style and words as they do on the TV show. As usual, they're funny and witty as they give advice. This is definitely a must-have for the QE fan or just for any guy who wants to improve himself!

Summary: Faux pas! Tres terrible!
Review: It was over brunch. At the Ritz Carlton. The champagne was flowing freely. My friends and I had a wonderful time tearing this book apart. Especially the part about home decoration. Ugh. What with the wall???? And those things the 5 guys wear in the book? Major technicolour nightmares, second only to Jason's dreamcoat. By the way, no, boys, cowboy boots are NOT essential items that every guy should have.and never ever drape your sweater over your shoulders. THAT look is so ...wrong. To say the least, we were not impressed.

Summary: Printed motivation
Review: Let me just start with a warning, of sorts: your purpose in getting this book should not be limited to "how to get chicks" or you will be disappointed.

Let's face it, we're not going to use about 50% of the advice and tips presented. The book simply offers small and easy suggestions to make your life better and easier, with or without an excuse to do so. In fact, in some cases, the Fab 5 themselves imply that it is just that, advice, and that "finding what works for you" is more important. That would seem pretty obvious and might turn you away from the book. Don't let *anything* stop you from reading this book! It is very hilarious, well-written, informative, and exactly what you've come to expect from these guys if you're a regular viewer of the show.

While Carson's fashion section, Thom's design advice and Ted's cooking tips are all excellent in their own right, the grooming and culture sections (by Kyan and Jai respectively) are probably the best and most useful parts of the book. These are the sections you can pretty much put to work for you the most immediately, inexpensively and with the "least" amount of effort.

For example, using facial cleansers to wash your face might seem very basic to some people, but for a regular soap and water guy, the act of spending some extra, hard-earned cash for skin care and grooming products he would never normally touch, and waking up to these products staring at him in the bathroom each morning, makes it more likely he'll use them.

Similarly, having these seemingly obvious tips as not just a mental note, but in a physical, printed format on your desk or coffee table, makes it easier to remember/follow them. Call it "printed motivation". The Fab 5 just gives you a "nudge", so to speak. As they say in the beginning of the book, though, "it's not about spending money, it's about spending THOUGHT!" Works for me!

At the very least, the guys get you *thinking* about all these things in different ways than you might have before. In doing so, you could also very well be inspired to create your own variations on their suggestions, which again, they encourage. If nothing else, "The Fab 5's Guide..." will be an entertaining read, and who can't go for that now and then? Pick up the book, and when you read it, you'll know, 'all things just keep getting better'! Thanks, Fab 5!!

Summary: Great for soldiers too
Review: My husband is currently deployed to Iraq. He is a great fan of the show and if he would not be looked at funny ( you know what I mean!) I would even send this book downrange to him to make him laugh. I definitely am planning on buying it for him though when he comes home. I am sure after a year in the desert, the same old flightsuit and the buzz haircut he will be ready to look and feel civilized again! I cannot wait to catch my husband shooshing it again!!

Summary: A must-read for every fan!!!
Review: Oh, how the world of television was transformed magically overnight by five fabulous men! Well, seven if you could "the Dave's", the show's creators and producers. As a hetero married woman, I proudly admit I have fallen in love with QE since its beginning - and my husband no longer hides the fact he watches it with me to his co-workers (their wives have smartly held strong to the remote as well!).

QE is pure genius. The show is not only witty, smart, hilarious and fresh, it also is full of heart. At the core of all the head shaving and sleeve-tsjuzing are the hetero male's biggest cheerleaders and fans hoping with all their heart that the frog really becomes a prince. All of this comes across on the pages of this delightful book written by our beloved QE stars. It delves deeper into what the true meaning of Queer Eye is - and how universal the message is. I can not recommend it enough. I treasure this book as I'm sure you will too. Look for amazing hip tips (you don't even have to break your pen and paper out for these!) and lifestyle makeover wisdom. Each page is stylish and slickly created and include beautiful pictures and sophisticated illustrations. Content wise - phenomenal; Overall presentation - amazing (it's the Fab 5 for God's sake, do you think they'd settle for anything less than amazing??!!).

Being in the West Coast, alas, I'll probably never have the chance to have the Fab 5 raid my own house. Therefore this book is especially precious for me. Alone, each man is a wealth of info, together they are a powerhouse to behold. This book goes hundreds of times beyond what the show's hour-long time frame cannot. Best of all, their wisdom is a resource FOR EVERYONE!

The Fab 5 truly are superheroes of the 21st century. Get the book. You won't regret it.

Summary: How to tszuj...
Review: Reading this book confirmed what watching the TV show made me suspect - I have no idea how to run my own life. This is the book every mother should give her son before he moves away to college or gets an apartment of his own. Life is full of stuff we all are SUPPOSED to know but nobody ever tells us about. Why was there never a guidebook before? As soon as the show started, I wondered when the Fab Five were going to write down their accumulated wisdom.

The book itself is kind of a coffee table book - expensive and heavily illustrated. Each of the five writes his own section which covers the basics in every area of expertise.

TED: What tools you need in your kitchen. When to buy produce. How to make cocktails. He tells you to NEVER smell the cork. There are a whole bunch of recipes in this section as well.

KYAN: I never had that "how to shave" talk with my dad - probably because he doesn't know how himself. Kyan tells you how. He also tells you how to properly wash and care for your face and hair. You'll find out the difference between styling gel and pomade.

THOM: You know more about decorating than you think you do. You'll find out how to paint those rectangles on your walls.

CARSON: Fashion - this is the most indispensable part of the book for me as I have no fashion sense whatsoever. You'll find out what to look for in a suit, what kind of clothes you should own, how to buy jeans, and the all-important pocket-square.

JAI: He has the hardest job on the show because he has the most nebulous job description. Yet, he does come up with a lot of useful tips for his section - how to shake hands properly, how to be the perfect party host/guest, and how to go on a date.

Every section is pretty funny and it makes a good reference book to keep coming back to.
