Rating: Summary: It ain't easy but it works Review: I went on this low carb diet about 1 year ago, and lost an amazing 50lbs. I was peaking out at 223lbs and I am only 5'6" and got all the way down to 170lbs, in just a matter of a few months. I also excercise 3-4 times a week, but I was doing this as a fat guy too. The idea of cutting out the carbs, is getting your body into the state of ketosis, which can be checked by using keto sticks. The keto sticks cost about $... for 100 sticks, and change color as they are exposed to your urine. As long as you are in a state of ketosis you are burning your own body fat. The reading in this book is not the most interesting in the world, but when you are on the diet it is a great reference book and I found that many of Dr Atkins ideas make much more sense when you experience them yourself. I have been on a low carb diet for almost a year now and I do eat more carbs than when I first started, but that is ok. As Dr Atkins says, you can start eating more carbs when you reach your ideal weight, the only thing you absolutely have to give up is sugar(nothing but carbs, no nutritional value). I might have gained 5-8 lbs back but let's face it, it's hard to avoid all carbs (fruit, vegatables, potatoes)but I know all I have to do is get back into the ketosis state and the lbs will disappear. I know a few people who have tried the diet but they didn't stick with it, because let's face it, loosing weight isn't easy, if it was there wouldn't be so many fat people and so many diet books on the market. I just didn't want to be one of those people who lose 50lbs and gain it right back. I'll tell you another thing, people notice when you lose weight and I don't know how many people have told me I look great and that's a really good motivator for sticking with it. One thing you will notice if you go on this diet, the grocery store shelves and fast food restaurants a full of carbohydrates. It's a tough diet to stick with, but I guarantee it works, and it will make you realize that the low fat diet is a crock. Dr. Atkins states any diet will help you lose weight at first, but the idea is keeping the weight off, and who wants to be hungry all the time. If you want to lose weight, get these books and go on this diet, remember the recipe for obesity is Fat + Carbohydrate = rapid weight gain. There's no such thing as being 1/2 on 1/2 off on this diet, but after a while it's easy to live without all the carbs. It's not the fat that makes you obese it's carbohydrates, on this diet you don't have to count calories, just grams of carbhydrates. Before doing this diet, I didn't know which foods were high carb and which were not but I learned quickly. Just look at the food labels when you go to the grocery store, you will be amazed to see how many carbs are being pumped into our systems. If you want to lose weight this is the way to do it.
Rating: Summary: It works! And it can lower your cholesterol, too! Review: I've had a great deal of success myself with the Atkins diet. My cholesterol is down, my weight is down, my blood pressure is down. I was so enthusiastic that I gave this three-pack as a birthday present to a relative who wanted to lose weight and in the past two months he's lost thirty pounds, and he's someone who had never successfully dieted before.
Rating: Summary: Please do not do this Review: It can make you very sick. Please do not do this diet.
Rating: Summary: The TRUTH about Dr. Atkins death Review: It is astonishing to read the slam pieces here about Dr. Atkins so-called obesity and overweight condition at the time of his death. Here are the facts: * He previously had a heart condition called cardiomyopathy -- a serious disease of the heart muscle which is unrelated to diet. * He died of a head injury because of an accident falling on slippery ice and not of being overweight. * His actual weight was 200 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital at the time of his accident. The erroneous reports of him weighing 258 lbs was based on his weight at the time of his death. The extra weight was not fat, but an accumulation of body fluids linked to organ failure during his coma. * His previous reported heart attack was due to a viral infection and not diet related. He spoke openly of his condition on various national news programs. * The report that was released about him being overweight was leaked to the press by a group named "Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine", which is an ardent opponent of the Atkins diet. In short, they distorted his weight by reporting the weight at the time of death - 258 lbs, and not at the time of his admittance - 200 lbs...an obvious attempt to discredit and distort the facts surrounding Dr. Atkins death. * A formal complaint has been filed by the Medical Examiner of New York regarding the suspicious leak of this information to the public by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine." * The disinformation surrounding Dr.Atkins untimely death is politically driven by the AMA and other detractors of the diet.Dr. Atkins book, New Diet Revolution has turned the AMA and other nutritional views upside down and has created a furor over the standard edicts of the medical profession. What is not said among the detractors of the Diet is that it is safe and it works. The information contained in this book will not only help you lose weight, it could save your life. The food industry, especially the bread and pasta industry have lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of the low carb revolution. Is it any wonder that this diet is under so much fire? Keep an open mind and read the book. As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the "Elixir Diet" system (see below). The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasn't even read the Atkins book!
Rating: Summary: Depends on You Review: Like most diet books and programs, this one can be very effective for some, somewhat effective for many, and useless for others. People keep looking for THE ANSWER for weight loss because they do not like the real answers that have already been found. Reduced calories, eating healthy, and regular exercise WILL cause weight loss and body-toning. Any system that makes that happen for you is a good system for you. But, it's the changes in behavior that work, not the system. This one is as good as any, if followed, and as useless as any, if not followed. This is a nicely packaged program; if you use it, it will work. If you don't make the lasting changes, this becomes a good doorstop or paperweight.
Rating: Summary: Our family lost over 200 lbs with Atkins+health benefits too Review: My wife and two daughters have lost over 200 lbs since August 2002 following the Atkins program. In my case, I dropped 75 lbs and 8 waistline inches. My blood pressure was at 170/108 is now down to 135/80. And I can tie my shoes and actually see my ribs for the first time since High School! I have more energy, more positive and feel great! My wife Cindy dropped 60 lbs and now has that high school cheer leader shape that I remember when we first started dating. She has slimmed down her hips, things and butt and look fantastic! Our daughter Tammy was suffering from hyperactivity. Along with weight and inch loss, an unexpected benefit was that she is no longer hyperactive (the protein I suppose)and along with our other daughter dropped 38 lbs and 35 lbs respectively. We enjoy the various menues and also started the supplements. I noticed that since using the Vit/Min supplement, in particular the antioxidants, my old knee injury from playing high school football has gone away along with other aches and pains that affect us middle aged people. My wife noticed the same thing. Atkins is a great program and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Counter-intuitive but extremely effective. Review: My wife got this book, and I initially was quite skeptical. However, I decided to go along (just because making a diet version and non-diet version of each meal would be too much of a hassle). Initially, for the first couple days, the diet is draining because your body is getting accustomed to having low blood-sugar. After that, it's fine. I got to eat all the meat and cheese products I wanted, and I didn't miss sweets because I wasn't that attached to them in the first place. Within 2 weeks I saw major results, losing close to 10 pounds. We've been on the diet for about 6 weeks now, and I've lost 15 pounds without killing myself exercising. We've discovered splenda and sugar-free candy from hershey, so we haven't had to give up sweets. There are low-carb versions of my favorite foods (pizza and pasta), so the sacrifice isn't very big. When you eat fast food, just take the burger off the bun or eat a salad. Easy as pie.
Rating: Summary: Less carbs - better way to eat Review: On the induction phase of this diet plan I lost 10 lbs in one week, and it was easier than ever (and I've been on every diet). I continue to use what I learned in this book and I now weigh the lowest I've weighed in 7 and a half years!
Rating: Summary: He saved my life! Review: Say what you want about Dr. Atkins but he saved my life. I have lost over 80 pounds, I am healthy for the first time ever as an adult. His diet works it is as simple as that!
Rating: Summary: Diet Works But Hard to Stick To Review: The Atkins diet definitely works. You can lose 10 pounds in a couple of weeks, although your weight loss will slow down after a while. You lose your appetite and have lots of energy. The problem is that if you've eaten carbs for decades, let's say 30 years, it's really hard to not cheat on the diet and not eat carbs. Believe me, you just get carb and sugar cravings. And once you start cheating on the diet and eating carbs, the pounds come rushing back. I'm thinking of trying the South Beach or Zone diets, so I can include even more carbs. If you don't really care about carbs or don't have a sweet tooth, this diet would be perfect for you. If you stick to it, the weight will come off pretty fast and you'll never feel hungry and you'll have tons of energy. It's all true.
