Summary: The best there is!
Review: I have read many childcare books, and this is the most comprehensive one out there. It covers all three of the major categories: parenting, child development, and medical information. This book really does have everything you will need for your child's first two years of life.

I really like the fact that the authors have raised eight children. There are many anecdotes from their family life in the text, which gives the book a very personal feel. I also like the wide range of advice that is given. My child was, and still is, a very fussy child. The Baby Book has an entire chapter devoted to fussy babies, with suggestion after suggestion on how to soothe them.

Some of the advice is a bit alternative, such as suggesting co-sleeping as a viable sleeping arrangement. This is something which my husband and I tried, and found it worked very well for us as a family. However, The Baby Book is not condemning if you do not co-sleep. Comments like "Wherever all your family members sleep the best is the right arrangement for you" (p. 299) are peppered throughout the text.

I have only two complaints about the book. First, although Sears refers repeatedly to medical studies to back up his suggestions, he never provides any citations. Secondly, since the book was published in 1993, some of the information is now out of date. Happily, a new edition is expected out next year.

Summary: well adjusted baby equals well rested parents
Review: Put it all to rest and read this book for treasured words of wisdom on you and baby. Who else knows (not many) about babies? Live, learn and offer baby the very best ground foundation and as the parents, your rewards will be peaceful rest. Think attachment parenting can't be a possible solution to wide awake nights and long worn out days? It not only can work for your household but also with my twins (2 pairs)and show how husbands can be a huge part of the success as well. Another well known family expert, Jodie Lynn, agrees with much the same as the Sears and others who say to Treat Your Children The Way You Want to Be Treated. Her new revised book, Mommy-CEO, 2001 edition, is the next best book to read. Mommy-CEO will help with toddler and preschool years and beyond - but here is a warning: If you are an individual who doesn't want to put in the time for your children to make them the very best they can be - Don't read either book! If you want your children to be loving, caring and successful in today's society - read both books There are a lot of family experts - and those of whom think they are - telling us what to do with this and that about our precious cargo.....but these are ...REAL people that hit the nail on the head for a better future - especially when it comes to everyday pull your hair out problems. My husband and I welcome the fact that they are both parents of several children and know firsthand how to provide input into actual daily parenting because they are doing it themselves. Now that's what we're talking about!

Summary: The best book ever!
Review: I was so happy to finally end the hand-wringing and on-going struggle that I lived with over how to raise my baby. This book confirms what all sensitive and caring parents know and want to do, but feel ashamed to admit for fear of riducule and chastising. Reading the advice given by a medical professional and father helped free me to raise my baby the way I KNOW I should. I will be forever grateful to Dr. Sears and his wife for that.

Summary: Parents Bible, written from experience & knowledge
Review: This book has been my bible for raising my children in a caring & loving environment. This book convinced me to breast feed. This book made me know that there was no other way for me & my 2 children besides attachment parenting. This book has was written on the experience of a mother & father of 7 children. Which are also pediatrician & R.N. both in practice together. You can get no better advise on almost any subject.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: This book was a real life-saver to me as a nervous first-time mom and put my fears to rest each time I went to it about a specific issue. I think Dr. Sears is the best and I would definitley recommend this book to any parent.

Summary: Great Reference/Information Book
Review: This book is great! I have pretty much worn out the binding by referring to it so often. Of course, you really need to buy into the Sears' philosophy on child rearing, which is breastfeeding is best, wearing your baby, attachment parenting, sleeping with your baby, and making your baby your #1 priority.

The Sears' provide so much information on illnesses & how to treat them, growth milestones to look for at different ages, dispelling myths, feeding, bathing, just anything related to baby care. What else can I say? I love this book. It is my gift for all of my pregnant friends!!! :)

Summary: I LOVE this book!
Review: The first few weeks with my first baby were terrible! I was so unsure of myself and she wasn't responding to anything I did. She cried and cried and soon I was crying too. This book was a breath of fresh air. Since reading this book, my daughter and I have established a wonderful bond and we are both so happy. I have more confidence and she rarely cries at all! Friends and relatives often comment on what a happy and healthy baby she is, and I believe that Dr. Sears has had a lot to do with that.

If you feel that some of Dr. Sear's opinions are a bit extreme, then only apply those practices that work for you. The rest of the book is full of other useful information that anyone can use regardless of their parenting style....

Summary: This book was and still is my Baby Bible!
Review: I was shocked to read some of the poor reviews on this book as it was a Godsend to us! It has information on ANYTHING you may need to know about your baby. I bought it for my sister when she had her first baby and it went through her two girls then she gave it back to me when I had my first child. She still calls me up to ask me to look up information in it for her! Great development tips and exercises to do with your baby which work great! I was worried about having our son sleep with us when he was little, but it was the ONLY way we could get any rest. This book reassured me that it was ok to want the baby to sleep with us. Now my son is 18 months old and I miss the days of him snuggling in bed with us. He didn't sleep with us forever and the transition was a piece of cake.

Who wouldn't want to be attached to their baby?! We get SO many comments now on how happy our son is. He's not a crier or whiner, he's just happy and we can communicate with each other VERY well, so he doesn't NEED to cry. We understand each other. Another book that has helped with this is "Baby Signs". If you want your baby to communicate with you as early as 8 months old then THIS IS THE BOOK for you.

Great advice in The Baby Book. I've got the Mayo book and this one for reference. I ALWAYS can find the answer in The Baby Book! ALWAYS.

Summary: Good, Quaility information
Review: Unlike some of the other reviewers, I know that I need to pull bits of info from books and apply it to my life as I choose. Dr. Sears is strongly opinionated about slings and co-sleeping, so the sling didn't work for us, big deal...co-sleeping has worked like a charm. I don't feel guilty or like a "failure" because I have a mind of my own and can decide what is right for us.

The book does a wonderful job of suggesting different ways of handling the difficult situations that arise as a new parent as well as quality nutrition infomation to start your child on the right foot with eating habits.

I highly recommend this book as an addition to a new parents library.

Summary: A very opinionated book
Review: While there is great information in the book, Sears has his way of child rearing and I felt like if you didn't choose his way then you were doing it wrong. The book made me nervous that I would not do things right if I did not do it his way. I would not recommend this book.
