Rating: Summary: Don't waste your money on this one Review: I really hated this book. The authors are very condescending and make you feel bad at every page turn. I think that most of the information in the book is correct but they way that they deliver it is uncalled for. Who needs to be belittled and berated when pregnancy is supposed to be a happy time. Instead I would recommend:Pregnancy Childbirth and the Newborn : The Complete Guide By: Penny Simkin It is much better written and enjoyable to read. It also helped quell my fears of labor and childbirth.
Rating: Summary: Unnecessarily Upsetting! Review: I found this book to be full of impossible and sometimes ridiculous standards that no normal woman could meet. It also has far too much negative and scary information that was just plain upsetting. After three months of anxiety about my pregnancy I mentioned to my doctor how troubling the information in this book was to me. She (also pregnant) agreed completely and added that no doctor in their large practice felt it was a good reference for pregnancy. She advised me to get rid of it, which I did as soon as I got home. I never thought I would destroy a book, but I gained much relief as each page of "What To Expect While You're Expecting" curled into flames! Don't read this book if you have even the slightest anxiety about your pregnancy!
Rating: Summary: Good as a *supplement* to other books Review: I bought this and Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy at the same time because I was warned by a friend that What to Expect can make you paranoid if this is your only source of information. My friend was right. HOWEVER, I have to say that I appreciate the thoroughness of this book. They seem to cover everything. My first pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 8 weeks and the information in this book actually helped me get through this time with a more realistic attitude. When I experienced bleeding during my current pregnancy, What to Expect provided some reassuring facts that prevented me from panicking (too much!). Just don't mistake this book for gospel and you'll find it very useful.
Rating: Summary: Was pregnancy really this horrible? Review: I first read this book when I was in my second month of pregnancy. I put it down and was immediately overcome with fear. I couldn't help but think that everything I was doing was wrong, and that I would ultimately suffer a miscarriage or have serious problems with the pregnancy. I understand the need to provide good information about risks and possible complications, but this book seems to revisit those topics over and over again. What not put the "bad stuff" in the same one or two chapters? I realize that the book covers pregnancy month by month, but some of the same information was covered over several months. I found the information about monthly checkups and physical/emotional changes to be informative, but I think the rest of the information could be better organized and presented in a less-threatening way. Afterall, this should be a happy time- and while pregnancy isn't always fun and easy, the first resource you turn to shouldn't make you doubt yourself as a mom-to-be.
Rating: Summary: Good to have on hand Review: Some might not love everything about this book. But, when I started having problems with my first pregnancy, it helped me so much. It has EVERYTHING in it that relates to being pregnancy. I'm glad I have it. It's good to run to and look up things...
Rating: Summary: If you care about your health this book is for you Review: I just couldn't believe some of the complaining I heard about this book !! I have no idea what some ladies expected to find in a book called What To Expect When You're Expecting!!! This book is honest and holds up to its title. One of thing I liked about it is that fact that it tells you exactly what is good for you and your baby and what is not. Why was that condescending, rude, and hard to hear/handle to some? I don't know! Refined sugars, bleached flour, deep fried foods, and exposure to harmful chemicals are not good for you whether you're pregnant or not, and this book stresses these facts and guides you to a healthy pregnancy and life style in general. If you expect emotional support and someone to hold your hand, talk to your partner and save your bucks. This book is not for girlfriends talk, it is very practical, right to the point, and it tells you exactly what to expect when you're expecting. Amazing huh?? If you expect an honest advice and no beating around the bush, this is the book for you. The book includes sections in nutrition, exercise, and expected symptoms that may apply to you, or you may skip through them. It also covers pregnancy month by month symptoms and how to deal with them. In addition to providing you with guidelines to leading a healthy pregnancy and a healthy life style, it will also answer a number of common questions, that will save you a lot of phone calls to your OB/GYN. It is no joke...this book is awesome!
Rating: Summary: Left a little emplty Review: As a first time mother, I found this book very hard to read. There were first trimester symptoms at the back of the book and I felt that everything I was eating was wrong and will harm the baby. I prefer the Week by Week Pregnancy Book by MacDougal. It showed you where you are and what you are experiencing!
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing, considering the hype Review: As all women are instructed to do, the momen I found out I was pregnant I invested in this book. After reading it and a few others, I just don't understand why it is considered such a valuable resource -- I understand that when it first came out, the concept was revolutionary, but since then much more informative, better laid-out books have been written -- most notably, Pregnancy for Dummies, which we find invaluable due to the brilliant indexing of information that allows you to find what you want when you need it, as opposed to forcing to you try and guess what trimester to skim under. I'd love to return the book, but made the mistake of writing in it. What a comparative waste of money!
Rating: Summary: Not for me. Review: I'm very relieved to know I'm not the only one who hated this book. On the whole, I found the book nerve-racking at a time when my nerves were shot already. It struck me as unrealistic, unscientific, and - as others have said - condescending. My recommendation would be to buy the book if you really want to - but don't feel bad or guilty if this one is not your cup of tea.
Rating: Summary: Expectations fulfilled Review: This is the best book available on the subject . All through my pregnancy I was literally guided at every step . Questions and problems which baffelled even by doctor had their answer in the book . The layout of the book is most helpful especially for a first timer like me . I especially recommend the best odds food plan provided in the book . I started as an under weight mother and by simply following the diet guidelines in the book I was able to deliver a 3.2kg baby with myself in perfect health . Now I recommend this book to all my friends.
