Rating: Summary: Everything Old is new Again Review: I'm glad I'm not paying for the hours it took to read through this book! We always had stress in our lives, but the country is fatter than ever! My parents built bomb shelters, landed in Normandy and my classmates and I sat under our desks during nuclear bomb drills! Something else is going on in our country that has to do with what the industry has done to food; it's always been the center of family society and gatherings. If you don't know by now to get the potato chips and cupcakes out of the house if you're trying to get a hold of your eating habits, let me remind you and save you a few dollars! Calling a friend for support is a good idea, no matter what problem you have! Trust me; you already know this stuff!!
Rating: Summary: On Target Review: Aren't you sick of people who don't read the book, but want to review it based on their criticism of Dr. Phil's looks or T.V. program? This book is a great resource for people who really do want to lose excess weight and keep it off. Yes, you can find many of his ideas in other places, but perhaps this book will finally make them click for you. If you attend Weight Watchers meetings you will hear most of the same principles. You might try combining the accountability and support of weekly meetings with Dr. Phil's advice. Do whatever you need to do for your health and well being! Good luck to all!
Rating: Summary: A real plan Review: I really got what I wanted with this book- real help to getting my weight under control. I need direction and an action plan not just another restrictive food list combined with a uninspiring exercise regime. I am convinced that Dr. Phil's book is the answer to life-long weight management.
Rating: Summary: Worth the read, but overkill! Review: Dr. Phil does a great job at relating to the average person and he does not try to talk over anyone's head. This book reflects those same characteristics. He's right, you have to take responsibility for your own actions. But, duh, isn't that the case for every action we take in our lives? I like Dr. Phil and his way of reasoning, but this book seems to me like it's just another way to capitalize on a population that is growing increasing overweight or obese and everyone is desparate for an answer. One thing I did like about this book is that it talks about exersize and not just "what kinds of foods you can eat". Exercise is what everybody needs; exercise with strength training is what everybody needs even more. We can't sit around and stuff our bodies with sugar and other high calorie foods unless we're willing to "burn those calories baby". This simple fact about weight loss is this: Burn more calories that you eat and you'll lose weight. The problem is, most people want a quick fix. Let's face it, we didn't gain an extra 100 pounds in a couple of months and we're not going to take it off that fast either. If you want to lose weight, buy this book. It will help you analyze if you really do want to lose it or just complain about it. Then go out and buy a book entitled "CURVES" written by Gary Heavin. This book will really educate you and give you easy to follow, commonsense solutions to permanent weight loss without permanent dieting.
Rating: Summary: This is a great book! Review: I would very much like to respond to Karla Antonio's review as well as the reader from WI...first of all I think that it is very unhealthy for a person to say such mean spirited things about another person. Dr Phil is NOT FAT. He works out every day, eats well and he is not any fatter than most large men. He is 6'4" and weighs 240. That is not fat by any measure of the imagination. He even says that he is not the regular poster model for weight loss, would you rather a skinny man who has no idea what he is talking about or a guy who has to workout and eat right to stay healthy and understands that struggles you have to get fit or stay fit. As for the reader in WI, I am disappointed only because I believe that either the book was not read or that large parts of it were ignored. Dr. Phil understands perfectly that there is not a "one size fits all diet" which is why his book is not a diet book but a behavioral approach to changing the way you eat. He is not there to suggest that you need to eat a particular type of food at all times, instead you are given a wide variety and told to size down your portions. His food plan is not only sound it is endorsed by the American Heart Association (Dr. Eckel, Professor of Medecine and on the Council of Nutrition). Dr. Phil also worked closely with a highly experienced nutritionist, as well as several other doctors- as you can read about in his acknowledgements. Dr. Phil also takes into grave consideration people with medical problems that make it difficult for them to lose weight. There is an entire chapter dedicated to such people and charts to show you how to figure out the results for yourself (Chapter 11- When You Can't Lose Weight). I have been of Dr. Phil's for years and have had the honor to see him in person and I can tell you that there is not a more genuine man in TV today. He Genuinely cares about the people that he advises. Buy this book because it is not like all the "diet" books and because he is not the usual svelte woman on the cover. He is "real" person- who wants to help you!
Rating: Summary: Dont buy it!!! Review: I purchased this book with anticipation that it would be good. It is one of the worst diet books on the market and I have read a million. It reads like a "wanna be" diet book or in other words it seems to be trying to hard to convince you that the material is on target when in fact it is way off base. The credibility of the author is in question after reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Tells It Like It Is! Review: This book is exactly what people need to learn - it ain't about the food! It's about why we do what we do. If you're willing to get honest and have a willing spirit - mind you that doesn't mean you have to 'want' to do it - just that you do it anyway - I believe Dr. Phil gives you the keys to the freedom you're looking for!
Rating: Summary: Psychobabble and Weight Loss Review: I was sorely disappointed in this book; it is an uninteresting read and to top it off, Dr. Phil is fat. His neck (on the book cover) looks like it has been airbrushed and the only reason you'd wear a dark suit is to cover up the adipose tissue hidden underneath. Plus, the endless psychobabble in the book was just boring.
Rating: Summary: An "ok" but not a great book Review: To the extent that his approach may help many people and change their lives, I will not rate this book lower than a "2" It does indeed contain many brilliant ideas about how to change the way you think of yourself in order to lose weight. However, I am continually disappointed by the appearance of "one size fits all" diets and weight loss books. Not all metabolisms are created equal and it is not always possible to lose by willpower alone. Dr. Phil is neither a medical doctor nor a nutritionist. His approach is very unhealthy for many people. If I ever tried to eat the way this man suggests, I would gain and my cholesterol levels would be off the map. I know this because I used to eat this way--it is how I gained more than a hundred pounds. The reason: I have two metabolic conditions that impede any sort of weight loss. Phil continues to belittle people who do have medical issues causing weight gain and completely dismisses thyroid complaints as if they are some convienient excuse made up by people to keep from having to work and lose. (As someone who works out 7 days a week and eats light by Phil standards, I guarantee you I am not making excuses.)
Rating: Summary: This is NOT a diet book! Review: I chose this book because I heard about it on Dr. Phil's website and through a few different articles about him. I was surprised to know that Dr. Phil was writing a weight book but I never doubted that he could do it- I was just amazed. I was half afraid that it would be another South Beach Diet or Atkin's wannabe that would just tell you how to eat and eat and eat...until all you are doing is thinking about food. The Ultimate Weight Solution is not about the food, it is about the person that is in charge of the food- YOU. I was so happy to find someone like Dr. Phil who has the guts to get down and dirty to show you the reasons that you need help, not with choosing certain foods but understanding your emotions and your inner self that you are letting dictate how you think about food. As an avid reader of most of the diet books out there on the market, many claim to be changing you forever but none of them are truly plans that will leave you satisfied forever...they always leave you at the will of their food lists. Most are written by high-end nutritionist that may be able to tell you what you should eat and how but they can't tell you why you keep going back to the same bad habits and bad foods time and time again. You lack will power or you are not following the plan right or you are really stressed and so need the food...you will give yourself any excuse you can and the books seem to accuse you for your ultimate weakness. I don't know how many books or diets I have given up because I felt as though they were accusing me of being weak or worse when I failed. I could not say what was wrong. Two minutes into the Ultimate Weight Solution you know that the person that wrote it was not going to tell you that you were weak or foolish- no he was going to some totally different and show you that sometimes the decisions we make are so ingrained in us that we have to reprogram the way we think. This approach takes away all the second guessing or defeating thoughts about yourself because it shows you that you are the one that ultimately has control and must seize that control. You are the one making your food decisions, you are the one that has to live with yourself everyday and, above all, you are the one that deserves to feel good and have a better life. This doesn't sound like your ordinary diet book, does it? That's because it isn't. The Ultimate Weight Solution is in a class of its own. It is simply the Ultimate Book.
