Rating: Summary: more of the same old same old Review: Sheeeeesh. I think a Weight Watcher's meeting is more helpful than this book. There is nothing new here. Better money is spent taking a cooking class.
Rating: Summary: Common Sense for Everybody Review: Interesting reading the comments written so far. I have started reading the book, and the skeptic that I am (tried dieting for more than 15 years with no permanent success), found halfway through Chapter 2 the core reason why I've been unsuccessful to date. (I'm halfway through the book as of Saturday September 13)It was an event/issue that I'd discussed with my parents and close friends, but never made the connection to my emotional reasons for overeating and consuming poor quality choices. I'm an educated woman -- graduate degrees and all. Others out there would say "see, it didn't tell you anything you didn't already know." True, but when one has a seemingly complex and unsolvable problem, simple truths can set you free. All my schooling did NOT prepare me for the events that triggered a 25-year weight gain odyssey. Today I really dug into my issue and have come away realizing I do have the power and the ability to drop the weight and get my disease state back into healthy state. To those of you who say that other "diet plans" helped you get to where you are -- FANTASTIC! I don't need another diet plan -- I have tried so many it is pathetic. I needed to see/hear/read some key information that helped me throw away my comfort food, and deal with what's real. Good luck to everybody, and to Dr. Phil. He may not have the precise answer to the predicament of all overweight Americans, but neither does Jim Karas, Robert Atkins, Bob Greene, Covert Bailey, nor all the others on the bookshelves. Seek and ye shall find, I say.
Rating: Summary: Not Only A Diet Change, But A Way Of Life Change! Review: I did not read this book yet, but I did watch the TV promos and completely understood Dr. Phil's Rationale! It's not always about the food, it's why we do things, or why we do not do things. It's whether we use food for fuel to feed our bodies, or for comfort to sooth our hurts! If you are looking for a miracle cure, or a free ride, you won't find it here. Changing the way we do things is hard work. A good idea is to make it fun and satisfying while we are doing it! I am presently working through Anthony Robbins motivational programs and lots of what is said *you would think* would be considered common sense! IF SO... WHY did I NOT see it that way before! WHY did I NOT take action before? WHY... WHY... WHY! Sometimes: 1) We need to hear it from someone we trust and respect! 2) We need it hear it from someone who cares! 3) We need to hear it from someone who has been there before us! 4) We need to hear it from someone who takes the time to want to help support us every step of the way, and NOT tell us what to do, but *shows us* HOW to do it! 5) We need to hear it from a complete stranger! 6) We need to hear it *just one more time* to push us over the edge to make the difference and propel us into action! Do you really think Dr. Phil did this for the money! How ridiculous! I find it most interesting that all those who gave negative reviews were negative in providing their names as well. It's easy to be anonymous, but not so easy to stand up and be accountable! If a person reads just one thing in the book that pushes them into action... to *make a change in their lives* THEN the book is/was priceless to them! Who has the right to be judge and jury as to whether the book works or not -- especially without trying it! Why not take the time to just watch and see. IF it works we will know, IF it does not work we will know! This book and Dr. Phil's program has given many cause for hope to turn their lives around. Who's right is it to take that hope away! Dr. Phil is NOT giving you another diet to try, he IS giving you a NEW WAY OF LIFE to try! Take it or leave it! It's YOUR life! It's YOUR choice! Roz Fruchtman ...
Rating: Summary: Dr. Phil needs to follow his own advice. Review: I finished Dr. Phil's book the other day. First of all, why is he giving weight loss advice when he is overweight. I know he is tall, but doesn't he weigh like 240-250 pounds. Second, there is no action plan in this book. You just have to keep filling in these sentences which, quite frankly, look a lot like those in a book called Flip the Switch. On March 2nd of this year, I bought Flip The Switch by Jim Karas. I saw him on Good Morning America as he helped Diane Sawyer lose over 25 pounds. It is the BEST weight loss book I have every read. Many times, I felt he was talking right to me. It is so simple and so smart. Well, as of today, I am down over 38 pounds. I eat according to his food plan, which by the way, does not eliminate a single food group. I exercise 3 times a week for about 30 minutes and my body has totally changed. This plan works and I have my sister and best friend following the program and they, too, have lost 24 and 28 pounds respectively. Please, please, if you are reading this post, order Flip The Switch and leave Dr. Phil to areas that he has more expertise and more personal success.
Rating: Summary: Old News Review: There is nothing new here that has not been in every diet book since the begining of time. It just has general advice, but what I find so troubling there is no formula to follow like South Beach. This is DR ( and I use doctor loosely because he is not an MD) Phil telling people they need to lose weight. Well, gee anybody can do that.
Rating: Summary: A grab for the gold Review: I've been a fan of dr phil's show and previous books, but it's obvious what happened here:he (or maybe his business manager) noticed how many diet books are best-sellers, so he figured he'd cash in too. My wife bought this the day it came out, and even she agrees--there's nothing new or even particularly useful, just the same old tough-love dr phil machine now turning its attention to obesity. And as several others have pointed out, dr phil lecturing you on why you're fat is the pot calling the kettle black. couldn't he at least have lost 10 pounds before this book came out? earlier this summer we bought The South Beach Diet, which has some real nutritional information and a practical diet plan going for it, more than I can say for this cynical attempt by the good doctor. (And we lost weight, too!)
Rating: Summary: Someone who read the book Review: First off, reading the "reviews" by readers who did not read the book, I don't believe you have the right to give comments to potential readers on this book. Second, those who critisize his book, do you have a PH.D? His book, as he stated and during the 9/12/03 TV speical, is not going to explain in detail what to or not to eat, how little or much you need to excersice to loose weight, nor the information you might receive from other failed fad diets. What he does is tap into the psychologic reasons to help better inform readers. I believe this book goes hand in hand with his other 4 books; he's not going to sugar coat and give people what they want to hear, instead he's telling you what you need to hear. This review is written by someone who is in the process of obtaining a PH.D as well in tip top physical condition and I highly recommend reading this book.
Rating: Summary: It's your decision Review: This makes sense. You can only lose weight if you decide to do it, and make a plan for it, and carry it out. Positive messages and a plan and use your will to do it. Your motivations may differ but there's only one way to do it. I've had every sort of diet pill and fad diet since I was 11 years old. But one can do anything one sets his/her mind to do. This book is about getting to that mind set. A good idea, and it is helping me.
Rating: Summary: Information we may know, but now we can apply it! Review: Many reviewers here have complained the book rehashes some of the same facts about obesity...well DUH! He has mentioned in interviews regarding obesity control there is "nothing new under the sun." Dr. Phil did not invent a new food to burn fat, or a magic pill...and those who are disappointed I feel are feeling that way as they wanted a miracle, a magic potion, a word, anthing to get them motivated, and what Dr. Phil says is own who you are, you cannot change what you don't acknowledge. We know how to eat, but now we can learn why we have, and hopefully stop. He pulls no punches, we are for the most part responsible for our own obesity, he has even suggested we purposely planned our lives around food..and he is right. He opened my eyes with his honestly, and as I read the book, I would grimace at the times I had made up excuses for my obesity, or why I cannot lose weight. This is is no punches pulled reading, brutally honest, but with hope. Hope that things can change because there is no magic, there is nothing "new under the sun," so we can read this book, and go out and change our body sizes, because there is only one way to lose weight....move more, eat less!! Bravo Dr. Phil.....After reading this book, I am not only committed to change, I am at peace; this is truly the last "diet book" I shall read, and that gives me much more time to walk!!!
