Rating: Summary: Confused Review: How can a fat guy write a book on weight lose? That is a mystery.
Rating: Summary: I hate to be negative, but... Review: I am a big fan of Dr Phil, and really admire his no-nonsense, straight-talking style. So I was intrigued to hear that he was publishing weight-loss books. But the fact that Dr Phil is selling meal replacement products blows his credibility right out of the water. I have lost 70 pounds over the last two-and-a half years, and in doing so I have learnt that re-educating yourself about food and changing your tastes is a long, slow process. (For example I used to LOVE chocolate and cheese and now I'm not remotely interested.) People who rely on meal replacement products don't learn to choose the "right" foods, and don't re-educate their palates. (What happens when you stop buying the meal replacement products?) So it's very disappointing that an "expert" on weight loss is peddling a quick-fix approach. It's also intriguing that very few people find the negative reviews posted here to be helpful. Maybe people just want to believe in quick-fixes...
Rating: Summary: Yep, it's pretty basic - and vital - information Review: I am fat because 1) I eat too much and 2) I don't exercise enough. It's as simple as that. I realized through reading this book how OUT OF CONTROL I was with food and how absolutely lazy I'd become. Food is not life. Food is merely a way to keep experiencing everything else in life. Why did I struggle with this for so many years? This book provided me with the insight to realize many things about my eating & exercising habits and gave me the tools to RE-LEARN how to take care of my body. I don't know why this book is so life-altering, but it just is. I'm not a fad-diet person, I have NEVER read a self-help book before, so my overwhelming support on this book shocks me. But it's awesome. I've done the diet/exercise thing before and usually lasted a week before failing miserably. But this time, there's a whole different approach. The challenges I experienced before that would normally crush all hopes of weightloss are no longer a big deal. I accept the challenge for what it is, understand how I need to handle it, and I move on. BTW, my husband doesn't get it. But then again, he is in perfectly health and body and drinks 6 cans of Pepsi a day and ALWAYS has a candy bar for lunch. He doesn't have to "get it" because his experience is totally different than mine.
Rating: Summary: Great Buy! Review: I bought this book and found it very useful and helpful. It motivated me to be on the right track and be healthy. Yes, it may be very similar to his father's book, but it uses comparisons more familiar to teens. It is directed specifically to that age group and look at the results!! It works!!!
Rating: Summary: Yes... and no. Review: I got a chance to review diets and write a bit about them, having tested them out. A friend got this as an early christmas present, and I've had a breeze-through read of it. I thought it would be nice to share my comments. Dr. Phil is awesome at being a commanding presence in an uncertain culture. People should take a lesson from this: one focus of American culture is that you should take heavy consideration of everybody else before you do something, and never be decisive. McGraw is decisive, and he's HOW famous now? But other than neat observations like that, I think that he misses the true mindset of a diet... and this mindset is simply "Eat less or do more." So I'm going to talk about what a diet is, because it's the point that Dr. Phil seems to cut just shy of in his diet book. Dr. Phil talks about a lot of things, but I think when you understand this, it surpasses everything else in the I'm going to make this simple for anyone who reads this review... You don't need a special book for this. The weight you gain or lose depends on two (and only two) things: calories consumed, and calories burned. Go ahead and read that last part again. There's no Atkins "ketosis" (one of the greatest snake-oil frauds I can think of), there's not really response-costs or yields... just calories burned and calories consumed. You use around 2,000 kilocalories to live (on Nutrition Facts, kilocalories are often abbreviated as Calories). So if you have 2 meals a day, they can range up to 900 calories each (a tremendous meal) and you'll still lose weight. Snacking usually begets extra calories... candy bars, pastries, or any food covered with sugar can hold 200 calories easily (think about eating ten of them in a day and NO OTHER FOOD). Potato foods can actually raise your blood sugar by more than straight sugar will, although the net effect makes it not matter (if you burn calories later, you'll just use the fat to rebuild your glycogen stores while you sleep). The problem with potato foods is really salt. Salty things are addictive. So you eat supersize fries, or a whole bag of chips. You can do all of this. You just need to have calories in mind. The more veggies you eat, the better off you are. Celery even has a slightly negative calorie balance, but for the most part, vegetables are filling, you stop when you're content, you get your daily fiber and vitamins, and and you even run under your calorie allowance. I have only ever met one not-skinny vegan. And she was far from being overweight. This is dieting in a nutshell, you don't need Dr. Phil to give you "insider information." Write down all the foods you eat, even "cheating" or "snacks." Make this a METICULOUS list. A cinnamon bun? About how big? With the white sugar glazing or without? Dd you have a little more cereal after your first bowl, because you had too much milk in the bowl? This list is often revealing in itself. Then find out how much you consume in calories. You can boost up from 2,000 with extra exercise (an extra hour of walking means 250 extra calories for the day, an hour's leisurely swim means 420, actually swimming laps bumps that up to 500)... And an hour's exercise will usually make up for people's snacks. You can always starve yourself, I suppose. But don't get too concerned with THAT. One of the greatest Utne Reader quotes ever was along the lines of, "You DO realize that if you sit there and wonder if a muffin is gonna add pounds to your belly, you harm your heart more than if you just shut up and enjoyed the muffin, right?" Eating less works, though. Here's an idea: Sip water after each bite. Fills up your stomache faster. If it's cold water, you have to use energy to warm it up to 98.6 Fahrenheit. Also, accept that you can leave a plate with food still on it. Don't feel obligated just because there's more on your plate, or in the pots on the stove. With these two, tips, you end up eating much less... And more veggies. Don't starve yourself too much. It's life, and it was meant to be enjoyed with a gusto. And that's dieting in a nutshell. Dr. Phil's advice kind of does this, kind of worms its way around it... so I think that the book isn't worth the 8 dollars, especially when I've given you a better way for free.
Rating: Summary: Subject good but print too small Review: I just received a copy and, while I haven't had a chance to put the suggestions into practice, I wanted to say that I was disappointed in the format. The print is really too small for me to read comfortably. It would have been much more helpful had it printed in the same way the "Chicken Soup For The Soul" books are, with larger print and better quality pages. So, my advice would be if you have trouble reading because the print is too small, maybe you should consider another type of food guide or check to see if this title can be purchased with larger print.
Rating: Summary: Lost weight; increased energy and vitality Review: I lost 20 lbs. and 4 inches around my waist. Best of all, my mental clarity was greatly sharpened, and I feel younger and more energetic than I have in years.I highly recommend Dr Phi's Ultimate Weight Loss System and this guide makes for a great companion to the book.Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Disappointed Review: I LOVE Dr. Phil so I was very disappointed that the format of this book was so hard to follow. The content is excellent....lots of good information, but in order to access the tables, the flipping back and forth is daunting. The print is too small and for one that is seriously in need of help, this is NOT the easy and quick format needed.
Rating: Summary: "Phil"-anthropy at its best, with FOOD! Review: I love to eat, and if there's something I love more than to eat, it is to eat and think about Dr. Phil. He has so many advices to send aobut the proper foods to have in your "pantry" (not pants, that's your dresser, which I also didn't know until this book, that they call it a "pantry" in the kitchen). Health is reproached in this book, and it is the "ultimate" solution, so you know it is the last dieting book you will ned, except it sin't a DIET so much as a DO-IT, with Dr. Phil as the "wind beneath your wings" shouting encouragement despite his own losing battle with excessive weight and bloating problems. Those who can't do, teach, and Mr. Phil teaches in spades with GUSTO. GET THIS BOOK AND IMRPVOE YOUR PANTRY. After all, Oprah.
Rating: Summary: NOW it all makes sense!!! Review: I purchased 'The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys To Weight Loss Freedom' when it came out. I really loved the book and it opened my eyes to many of the behaviours that lead me to need a weight loss program. So I knew why... but I still didn't really know how. By the time this Food Guide came out, I'd pretty much given up on the program and had no intention of buying it. But, because the price was so low, I thought "why not?". Thank goodness I did. This was the "how" it'd been looking for. It answered all my questions regarding carbs, fat, sugar... Now I know that by using this program, I'm getting the healthy BALANCE I need. I've lost a significant amount of weight already. But more importantly I have no more worries about cholesterol, heart problems, diabeties, etc. because of the wrong program.
