Summary: I can't say it's bad because The Atkins' Diet works.
Review: I've read The Atkins' Diet book. I've tried The Atkins' Diet. It works!!!

I kept hearing from individuals and on TV how The South Beach Diet is the same as The Atkins' Diet. Last week on TV I hear another nutritionist say this on a national news show.

I looked at The South Beach Diet book. Yep, the diets look the same. Yep, phase 1 is 2 weeks long just like Dr. Atkins' induction diet. Yep, no carbs for 2 weeks just like Dr. Atkins' diet.

I keep looking. I find lots of similarities and no differences.

I go back to the beginning of the book and start reading. Yep, sounds just like The Atkins' Diet. I get to the part where Dr. Agatston starts trashing Dr. Atkins' diet. I smell a rat! Why did Dr. Agatston stoop to this? Is it the almighty dollar?

I'm sure both diets work. Like they say on TV, they're the same diet. If either diet works they must both work!

I'm sticking with The Atkins' Diet.

Summary: It's become my way of life.
Review: Like anyone who's interested in this book, I've had my share of successes and failures with diets. Six years ago I was in the hospital with a heart attack and a blood sugar of 581. For those who don't know, that's about five times normal. I weighed 253 pounds and was convinced that at my age, exercise was a no-no. I lost forty pounds on the Am. Diabetes Diet and began an exercise regimen. I was proud of my accomplishment until the weight started creeping back up as it had with other diets before. I had met Dr. Atkins when I interviewed him for a TV Program years ago. Even have an autographed book around somewhere, but I feared the quantity of fat that he was recommending. WHen I picked up the South Beach Diet, just to see what was different, I thought here was a diet that I could deal with. The first hundred or so pages of text were as important as the actual diet plan. Everything he said became a reality. I lost belly fat first, I lost my cravings for sweets and other high glycemic foods. Had nothing to lose but a few calories and cravings, so I did Phase 1 and lost 12 pounds and one waist size in two weeks. I'm now about three pounds heavier than I was when I graduated High School. Beyond that, my blood sugar has been smack dab in the middle of normal, and my blood pressure is greatly improved. I stick to Phase 2 for the most part and go back to Phase 1 if I put on a pound or two travelling. I must admit that every few weeks I cheat. I just can't resist those Polish Sausage sandwiches at my local Costco. I load it up with relish, onions, catsup, mustard and enjoy it. Not a big deal, I just stay really good for a few days. Other than that, it's a piece of cake...ooops, easy as can be, to stay on the diet. I don't miss a thing. I have only one complaint and that is one recipe calls for "fat free, sugar free, fruit flavored yogurt" and I've been to grocery stores all over Tucson and even on trips to LA and Chicago. There doesn't seem to be such a thing. I emailed Dr. Agatston, but never got a reply. I guess I can forgive him because I look and feel pretty great for a guy who's about to turn 74. I do three miles a day, even when I play golf and my cardiologist wants me to lecture some of his other patients. That book was a great investment. Actually, I came to your website today to check out the new South Beach DIet Cookbook, which I will do right now.

Summary: Not just a diet, a way of LIVING!
Review: I've been battling with weight loss for years. Simply eating low fat didn't work, I was existing on BAD carbs. If you read the book, you soon discover there are good carbs and bad carbs, as well as good fats and bad fats. Anyway, I won't spoil the reading for you. All I can say, is eating low fat for years made my carb cravings unbearable, bad thing is, I didn't know it.
My husband hates diets. He was a total skeptic as he watched me fix separate dinners, mine and his. Then, he noticed my pants were baggy. On his own he went on SBD too!
We've both lost weight, and we feel great, but this is NOT a diet, despite the books title. It makes you actually THINK about every morsel you put in your mouth, even if you aren't aware you are thinking about it. I went out to eat one night, and when the bread bowl arrived lines from the book popped into my head! It isn't a question of resisting temptations, it is simply making better choices.
I've lost weight, yes, but when I go for my yearly checkup I'm sure both doc and I will both be pleased. I don't have to see my blood results to know I FEEL BETTER. I know that by following this "diet" I may never be skinny, but I've reached an acceptable healthy weight and I feel great. I even work out occasionally, when I think I've been too sedentary at work and such, something I said I'd NEVER do. Never say never, I've found I actually enjoy exercising now that I'm not lugging around all that extra fat.
There is NO WAY a person will NOT loose weight on this "diet."
I wish I could meet Dr. Agaston, I'd like to shake his hand.
Most of my weight was put on when I was on high doses of prednisone, "steroid fat" which I was told was unavoidable and difficult to lose. Well, I did it, and I've kept the weight off.

Summary: Food tastes good, but no weight loss
Review: I've followed the daily diet plan to the letter for five weeks. I started out at 270.

I have lost a whopping 5 pounds in five weeks-- which at any given time during the day, disappears with normal body flux with fluid intake and such. It's been extremely disheartening.

Although a few of the recipes have made my boyfriend and I make faces, most are quite good-- and we have been eating more fish (and are less afraid to try cooking it) than we were before. However, after five weeks the craving for carbs has not subsided, and I have broken down literally in tears from feeling so miserable more than once.

For perspective, I lost no pounds during the "lose up to 15 pounds in Phase One" timeframe. I lost my mind, however.

Unfortunately, the misery that has been attached to this diet has made me feel like such a life change really isn't healthy, nor is making me feel better. If anything, I've felt far more depressed, frustrated, and deprived than ever before. I feel like it's better to stay fat and just accept myself the way I am.

Summary: Very Informative
Review: I found this books to be very informative. The beauty of this book is that it teaches you how the body processes foods and the direct result of what happens to the body when you eat the wrong ones. To my surprise, I found that many of the foods this diet allows, are the very foods I have always loved, but have been too afraid to eat because of calories and fat. This diet motivates a healthy lifestyle, while still allowing you to eat higher glycemic carbs in moderation. Even better, the weight loss just comes along with it. Another great thing about this book are the recipes. There are many great choices for each phase, this is especially helpful in getting you through the first two weeks (the Strict Phase). I highly recommend this book, even if you're not going to follow the diet, it just good information that everyone should know.

Summary: S.B. Diet
Review: This book is great for former fatties like me. Two years ago, I was 21, 5'8'' and a whopping 303 pounds, not to mention desperately unhappy with myself. I even thought about suicide and liposuction. Now, I'm 23, 5'9'' and 230, and still slimming. I hope you like this diet. It was awesome.

Summary: A diet that works!
Review: It has been 4 months now and I have lost a total of 38lbs. My wife lost 20lbs. The third and fourth days were very difficult for me. I felt very weak and irritable during this time however, my wife felt great the whole time. On the 5th day and thereafter, my energy level actually increased and I felt great. I am now in phase three with a cheat meal about twice a week. I tried the low fat diets in the past and I managed to lose 10lbs or so, but it would always come back with an extra 2-3lbs. Using this diet has been very easy. I highly recommend the South Beach Diet.

Summary: South Beach Diet is the best
Review: At first I thought that I would die without carbs for 2 weeks, but as I got into the diet I started to feel really good and noticed a change. So many people have come up to me and have told me how great I look. My energy level is up and I feel like I can do more. I have lost 23 pounds so far and the best part is that my cholesterol has gone down from a 215 to a 162. This diet really works if you put your mind to it.

Summary: The best diet ever...
Review: I tried them all...the Drinking Man's Diet, the Pritikin diet, the Ornish diet, the Atkins diet. I reluctantly tried the South Beach Diet after friends urged me to try it. While Atkins encourages eating fat...Agatston advises eating more chicken and fish and vegetables. He suggests utilizing GOOD fats such as olive oil and canola oil...and cutting back on red meat but not eliminating it all together. He encourages breast of chicken rather than eating the dark meat and skin. He encourages eating fish with high alpha omega oil content. He encourages eating vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, tomatoes and leafy greens such as spinach and salads. He encourages you to eat nuts. With Atkins such foods are more limited. The South Beach Diet does not require you to count carbs...you're encouraged to eat till you're satisfied. I find it very easy to stick to this diet...and the pounds are coming off. This is the sort of diet you can live with for life and not be concerned as much about bad fat clogging your arteries or putting you in danger of contracting various types of cancer.

Summary: First and only diet I'll ever be on.
Review: My lady and I both let ourselves go a little bit since college. We got fed up after a while and started working out, eating low-fat/low-calorie foods, going to nutritionists. Nothing really seemed to work. Scepticly we tried SBD; joined the website. It's been 6-weeks and I lost 24 of the 40 pounds I wanted to lose and my lady only has 6 pounds to go for her goal weight and she basically has to buy a whole new wardrobe. This diet works. It requires discipline but if you can follow it and learn how to adapt your lifestyle to it you will lose weight and feel better then you ever have in your entire life. We've already inspired a lot of friends and family to try it as well and it is working for them too. It's amazing how cutting out sugar almost completely can make this much of a difference. The meals are excellent, the options are plentiful and once you get past the first few weeks and learn how to adapt what you like to the plan it becomes a simple diet to follow.
