Rating: Summary: A revolutionary breakthrough, everone must know about Review: This book is a tremendous breakthrough in the world of health. One of te reason for this is that it was not only designed by one of the most renowned cardiologists in the country, but it wasn't initially designed to be a diet! It was designed to change the blood chemistry of his patients, and in the process they lost a substantial amount of weight, in a very healthy way. The writing is so simplistic anyone can understand how their body works when it comes to food digestion and weight loss. More people need to be aware of this book. Take my advice, get a copy for yourself.
Rating: Summary: The answer to the diet contrversy Review: This book is a very good read and addresses the questions regarding the "high carb" or "high fat" controversy. It is far from a rehash of the low carb books of the past. It explains how to control hunger through food choices and food preparation and processing and provides needed answers to the current confusion about diet.
Rating: Summary: This is the best diet I have tried! Review: This book is a must read for anyone who wants to lose weight safely, quickly, and easily. The South Beach diet works! I lost 25 pounds in a little over two months. I was never hungry, and the plan is easy to maintain. This is a nutrition life plan, not just a diet! There are many foods to choose from daily. You can choose your portion size, and you can eat three meals, and two snacks every day. There are no foods to be weighed, and no points to count. While the first two weeks restrict some foods, you seldom feel deprived, as the weight starts to drop off, especially around the abdominal area. Following the first two weeks, the menu is more varied, yet you continue to lose weight. There are delicious recipes in the book, or you can choose to prepare the foods you like to cook, modifying some ingredients to keep within the plan. Once you reach your goal, Dr. Agatston outlines a maintenance plan, which really works, even when eating in restaurants, or while traveling. The diet is very healthy, as you will eat lean meats, fish, dairy products, vegetables, fruit, and grain products every day. Before beginning this diet, I asked a physician to review it, to determine if it made sense nutritionally, and from the standpoint of cardiac health. He said that it was the best diet plan that he had seen. If you have failed on other diets, try this one. The weight will come off, and stay off!
Rating: Summary: Atkins with some good recipes Review: I find it amazing that the book starts out with "not low carb". That's exactly what it is. To me its just a rehash of the Atkin's plan which, I personally, think is incredibly unhealthy. I read it and immediately got rid of it. It gets two stars for a few good recipes.
Rating: Summary: It takes willpower Review: My wife and I have been on this diet for 4 weeks. My weight goal is to lose 25 lbs. and my wife want's to loose 17 lbs. We both lost 10 lbs on Phase I (2weeks) and an additional 3 lbs while on Phase II (also 2 weeks). We consider this to be very good and are continuing on this diet. First the negatives....Some of the recipes taste terrible so be careful when adding their seasonings. If you hate sour tastes, such as vinegar and lemon, you will not be a happy camper. Do you like to have chicken breast everyday (sometimes twice a day?)? If not, you will have some forced eating to do. Also on Phase I, you will have eggs everyday for breakfast. Monotony can get to you real quick, so be creative with seasoning your food to your taste (no sugar or fats, though). This diet could also be called the "Chomp Chomp Diet" since you will be doing a lot of that as you eat salad twice a day. Some recipes are for 6 servings, but there are only 2 of us. No, the same item is not repeated in a few days either. Also, you may buy some stuff at the store and not use it again before it spoils and has to be thrown out, so carefully review what you are using and buying. Fish is very expensive so be careful about which sauce you use on it. We've actually had to throw our fish courses out and just ate our salad. Now the good stuff. If you follow this diet to the letter, you will lose weight. The diet is written by a cardiologist and is very healthy. You don't have to count or weigh anything except for quantities in the recipes. We found that we had to cut down on the quantities in the recipes because we didn't want to eat that much of whatever. There were very few instances where we were ever hungry. Some recipes are quite delicious and we bought the cookbook as well for more variety. We are alternating the dinner items between fish, chicken, pork, and beef so we can avoid that chicken breast monotony. We do follow all the recommended types of items, though--when we have chicken we have the breast, steak (sirloin) etc.. Most important, you will notice your insulin come into balance and really feel a lot better with more energy. After the 1st two weeks, we were able to rescue some pants from the discard pile since they now fit again. The cookbook edition has nice pictures of some items that you may want to try. Armed with the Doc's info, we are also using some recipes from other low-carb cookbooks, such as coleslaw. We are hoping to reach our weightloss goal in a few months. If we don't, we will go back to Phase I for a couple of weeks. If we do, it's on to Phase III for the duration. We realize now that we cannot return to the world of starches and sugars again.
Rating: Summary: Don't dismiss this as a fad diet Review: Please don't write this book off as a fad low-carb diet (as another reviewer who clearly hasn't even read the book did). The South Beach Diet is about cutting out bad fats and bad carbs--carbs that come from highly processed and high sugar foods, foods that we quickly get addicted to as we seek convenience and taste. Dr. Agatston is a well respected cardiologist and he designed this diet to help his heart patients with high cholesterol and weight problems, so you certainly do not eat all meat and cheese on this diet! It's very well balanced, and you only don't eat bread and fruit the first two weeks in order to get your body off it's addicition to starch and sugar. Then you start adding whole grains and fruits back into your diet--just like nutritionists recommend. Best of all, it's simple to follow and tasty. Commit two weeks of your life to this approach and see if you don't feel better too!
Rating: Summary: To lose weight, just head South. Review: This is a diet book whose plan is to get you to lose weight by limiting your carbohydrates- essentially another low-carbohydrate diet. It has 3 phases where your carbohydrates are severely restricted at first, and then re-introduced. These kinds of diets will definitely help you lose weight in the short run, but in the long run, they fare just as well as any regular calorie restricted diet. An easy read, I give it 4 stars. Readers interested in other weight loss books might also want to check out "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan" to see what the published research has to say about losing weight. Happy reading!

Rating: Summary: It works! Review:
I had so many friends who have lost weight on this diet that I had to try it. The hardest part was giving up my evening wine for the first two weeks, but I love the food. Also -- I sleep better on this diet than I did on the Atkins diet.

Rating: Summary: It works. Review: Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food has gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. In the first five days I was on this diet all the craving ceased and I was already 8 lbs down. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, Try this.
