Rating: Summary: Successful Review: I heard about this book through the tv. I read about it but didn't give it a lot of thought. I was walking every day atleast 2 miles, but still wasn't losing the weight I wanted around the stomach area. I remember Dr. Perricone said somthing about as you get older fat seems to settle around the mid section. Got my brother, who was having a weight problem along with me both to buy the book. It has changed our lives. My brother, who never walked now does a mile day, and has lost over 20 pounds. I am in my size 4 pants again, and we are planning a South Beach Thanksgiving. Thank ou Dr. you have made a difference in our lives. I am sure that we will live longer thanks to your health plan. Tell eveyone I know about it. it's the greatest.
Rating: Summary: I have to give up what??! Review: I don't see how anyone can stick to a diet that makes you give up everything you enjoy, then S L O W L Y lets you add them back in...in small quantities. My husband and I tried this for 2 days then quit; we were starving all day, tired, and miserable. No thanks. We gave the book to someone else.
Rating: Summary: Mothers with post-baby belly - GREAT book for us! It works! Review: I'm in good shape, but after having 4 children my belly was my problem spot. Endless crunches, leg-lifts, diets, nothing seemed to help. I spotted this book and was skeptical. But this is not another "Diet Book." It was written by a respected cardiologist as a way to improve heart health. The incredible side effect is that you really, truly, honestly do lose belly fat first! AND you lose the cravings for the foods that create that belly-bloat. My teenage daughters and I now wear the same size jeans and I am finally happy with my midsection. The book is easy to read and the eating plan very simple for a busy mom to follow. -- Elizabeth Pantley, author of Gentle Baby Care and The No-Cry Sleep Solution.
Rating: Summary: not for me Review: I read the book, all of which he writes is what everyone else has written. i've been on this diet for 1 1/2 weeks, strictly, might i add, and have even worked out every other day. i have not seen 1 pound of weightloss. the only reason i say it's "not for me", though, is because i'm not what is considered "overweight" by medical standards. my mom and someone else she knows are on it, and are losing weight. If you're in good health, and are just trying to lose 5-15 pounds, just watch what you eat and exercise. or do this for some sort of eating behavior modification, to get into some good habits, like what i now realize is the only thing i can get out of this. i can say that after 1 1/2 weeks, i have lost most of my carb cravings. i think that the true premise of this, and any other diet is to simply teach people to be disciplined when it comes to food. once you do anything for a long time, you're bound to get into the habit of doing it, and that's the one thing that dr. agatston is teaching here. but be careful when doing this diet, the rumors of constipation and dehydration are true. if you're working out a lot, skip phase 1 and just go to phase 2, because you need carbs. you won't have the rapid weightloss in the beginning like the claims are, but at least you won't become dizzy and faint. also, the book is sort of ambiguous when it lists the things to stay away from, yet mentions decent size portions in the provided recipes. use your common sense when doing this diet, and hopefully, you'll have better luck than i did!
Rating: Summary: Not enough words...... Review: I had recently been diagnosed with acid reflux disease and felt helpless with treatment options. I was taking 2 nexium a day along with Tagamet at night. The pain was just miserable and my Dr suggested Lap Nissen surgery for a fix....not fun. I've never really been overweight (6ft 195lbs), but knew I needed to change eating habits. After seeing a review of this book on MSN.com, I decided I would give it a shot. I can honestly say after 5 days of being on the diet, ALL my symtoms were gone. No indigestion, no heartburn, nothing. And to top it all off, I lost 12 lbs in two weeks and feel fantastic. I've now been on the diet 5 weeks, am still hovering around 180-185, and no longer take any medication. I can't possibly say enough good things about the diet and how it possibly saved me from years of misery.
Rating: Summary: Easy reading-Great book!! Review: This is the first "diet" book I have ever read, and was so suprised how easy it is to follow. He gives you so much information about nutrition, living healthy, etc, but you don't feel overwhelmed! It answers all the questions I have ever had about this diet and even all the others. ANYONE could read this and understand what his "diet" is all about---living realistically, but living healthier and LONGER! Great book, read it if you are even halfway interested!
Rating: Summary: The diet might be great but its description is too skinny Review: While the science of the diet might be sound and the diet itself might work wonderfully, the book's description of the mechanics of the diet are way too vague. For example, in its discussion of Phase 1 of the diet, it states that one should eat only those carbohydrates that exhibit a low glycemic index value, but fails to indicate what values should be considered "low." Because of the lack of concrete detail, it seems as though the diet would be a bit too difficult to truly follow unless one adheres closely to the extensive meal plans provided.
Rating: Summary: This one really works!!! Review: I love this diet. I lost weight and established a healthier way of eating. For this to work, you have to commit to planning your meals every day. You can not wing it because you'll finid yourself very hungry without anything that you should eat. Be creative with the diet and you'll see that this is a healthy way to eat that doesn't make you feel like you're on a diet. My husband and I did this together and we have recommended it to everyone we know. Read it!
Rating: Summary: It's easy and it works. Review: I picked this book up on a whim one day, though I'd been thinking for a while about going on a diet. Diabetes runs in my family and I knew that my chance of getting it increased the longer I took to actually make a real change to my eating habits. This book is helping me kick my carb habit and learn to eat better. As a bonus, I've lost 13 pounds in a month, despite the fact that I haven't been exercising regularly. This is an amazingly easy diet to follow. The first phase is difficult for the first few days, but, like Dr. Agatston's testimonials mention, it gets much easier. I was surprised by how quickly I felt like I had more energy and how soon I started seeing results. Dr. Agatston makes clear, simple, concise arguments for his diet. It makes sense. He not only emphasizes the difference between good and bad carbs, he emphasizes good vs. bad fats. I'd been trying to stick to a low-fat diet, but I just wasn't losing any weight. Cutting back on my carb intake and being smarter about which ones I eat now, combined with being responsible about the types of fats I eat (avoiding saturated fats is key, so don't think you can go have a bun-less double bacon cheeseburger), has been much easier than I thought it would be. Throughout the book (half of which is recipies and suggested daily meal plans), Dr. Agatston and the testimonials he includes emphasize how after they've been on the diet for just a short time, many people lose their craving for carbs. I really didn't think that would happen for me. I love, love, love carbs: bread, rice, pasta, sweets. And yes, if I see or smell fresh-baked bread or cakes, I want to have some. But once they're out of sight, I pretty much don't think about them or crave them. I can't say enough how important it was to me that Dr. Agatston's plan is positive, not negative. I didn't feel like it was a chore to follow the diet. I can go out to eat, even on Phase 1. I didn't feel deprived those first two weeks. I don't now, in Phase 2. Reading the book, I thought, "Yes! I can do this!" And I know that I can have a few bites of chocolate cake every now and then and that it's not a bad thing. I just can't have the whole cake. And that's OK.
Rating: Summary: Losing weight is a done deal! Review: I was 30 pounds overweight for over 10 years before I came to Amazon.com and read all about this book. I bought the book and have followed the diet successfully. So far I've lost 25 pounds, feel great and have no cravings for the ice-cream bucket. Because of the comments here, I bought Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self to stop my self-sabotage and Optimal Thinking works. I am putting my best self in charge, getting what I want, and using the roadmaps to deal with my emptiness and bad feelings.
