Rating: Summary: Gossip Review: Dear Reader from Seattle: What is the source of your info. about Carolyn Hax's divorce?
Rating: Summary: Amen Sister!! Review: Don't you just hate it when you talk to family members and they ask you "so you got a boyfriend yet?" This book gives you the power to say "NOPE" with a smile. I was feeling down (you know, the whole 'no boyfriend' thing)when I bought this and it strengthened me. Carolyn offers great advice and her sense of humor is on point. For example, she says don't be superficial, but if there's no attraction, move on. I hate when people (with mates)tell me I should date or get involved with someone they wouldn't dream of dating! This book is short, funny, and so true! Rock on Carolyn!
Rating: Summary: Down to earth, candid advice! Review: I love Carolyn Hax because she is pretty much down to earth and tells it like it is! She gives candid advice that is certainly not sugar coated! She is witty and intelligent, and you can tell that behind all of that sarcasm is a woman who genuinely cares about people. Why else would she be writing advice? I suggest this book to everyone, especially if you are in a bad relationship. The advice is awesome and funny at times. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Carolyn gives you the rude truth Review: I'm a big Carolyn Hax fan and I have been looking forward to her new book for a long time. I just finished reading it and I am not dissapointed. Not only is her advice meaningful and thoughtful, but, wheather you agree with her or not, she's funny and has a razor sharp wit which is very refreashing these days. It's a quick read and, like her column, gets right to the point and the rude truth (no matter how much it hurts). Okay, granted, it's not Pulitzer Prize worthy, but I recommend it highly to anyone new (or in dire straights) in the game of love and in need of some non sugar coated direction. The perfect beach book.
Rating: Summary: Advice columnists are not Gods Review: I'm one of those "devoted fans." Hax has said in her chats and column that she and Nick are spliting - that's where the info comes from. But more importantly, a divorce does not disqualify an advice columnist. A person who lives life well is not incapable of making mistakes. Actually, if they were, their advice would stink.
Rating: Summary: Tough advice from one who's lived it Review: I've been an obsessed fan of Carolyn's column and online discussions for years. I finally bought her book for myself and for my equally obsessed best friend, and I read it all in one night. For me, it was like hearing old stories from an old friend, because the points she makes in her book are issues she has covered many times before -- always with wit and naked honesty.Carolyn has always maintained that love is not the answer to everything, and sometimes divorce is the best solution (after, in her words, you've "worked like dogs to fix it"). To me, her divorce represents an honest attempt to follow her own wise advice. I don't think it makes her any less credible -- in fact, it makes her more so, because she's been through it, and it's not advice she gives lightly. Finally, to quote Nick, her ex: "Who would you rather have leading you into battle? The novice West Point graduate or the grizzled, battle-hardened warrior?" Battle on, Carolyn.
Rating: Summary: The Straight Dope! Review: In reading this book, I found a lot of the wit that exists in her columns and chats, something I definitely hoped for! Ms. Hax, in the book as in her columns and chats, has a very tell-it-like-it-is sensibility. Although most of what existed in the book were issues derived from the numerous columns and chats over the past couple of years, the advice she offers is a very generic (in a good way!) type of advice that we really all should be following. Although she discusses other life issues as well, if you are in the market for love, this is a must read for how to behave in seeking out the right partner!
Rating: Summary: Duped again! Review: People, people. When will you realize that advice books and relationship books are written by people worse off than you are? Hax is witty and smart and a good writer but she hasn't found love. She and her husband are splitting up.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book for Hypocrites! Review: Physician, heal thyself. Hax was fun to read years ago when she first started her column, but she's grown tired and predictable. She wondered why she caught such hell when she and her husband divorced shortly before announcing she was pregnant and engaged to another man. She actually wondered. She needs a good advice columnist to straighten her out. I don't recommend she look for one in this book, though.
