Rating: Summary: Shimmering - essential - humorous! Review: A great read for a lazy Saturday!
Rating: Summary: Great for Many Things - Including a Laugh Review: I must say - I got a big kick out of this book. While I don't question its credibility (the authors name all of their sources (experts in their respective fields) in the back of the book) I had a hard time not laughing at some of the instructions. Even if I never use any of the instructions in the book, it will be worth the money I paid for the laughs I got. It is also very interesting. A lot of the situations are those one would expect to find in your typical action movie. To compare how this book says to execute a maneuver and how they are executed on TV or in a movie is interesting. If you're an outdoorsman, a computer scientist, a homemaker, or a person who knows how to read and has a sense of humor, I would recommend this book as something to at least skim over sometime.
Rating: Summary: Careful Review: As a Special Forces soldier, I read just about every book written on survival. If I were to rate this book on entertainment value alone, I would give it five stars, or at least a healthy four stars. However, I decided to rate it on utility. And for that, it gets only a three, but a "happy" three. (It is a cleverly concieved book and I did not feel ripped off, just not fulfilled.) If the reader is looking for a Five in Utility and a Three in Entertainment value, he/she should read the U.S. Army Survival Manual--which I see is also on Amazon. Safe Travels!
Rating: Summary: Tongue-in-cheek humor with Burt Reynolds' classic voice Review: Survival experts provide basic instructions on how to meet the uncertainties of life; from fending off sharks and delivering babies in a taxi to identifying bombs. The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook blends tongue-in-cheek humor with Burt Reynolds' classic voice as it points out possible life-threatening situations and how to handle them.
Rating: Summary: Amusing party fare - entertainment only Review: Definitely worth the low price as long as you only use it for a conversation piece. A charming gift for the right person; although kind of oversold. A final note: the other reviewers are correct that the advice is *brief* and sometimes obvious. As a real survival manual it fails miserably. Read the endnotes and you will see they did minimal reserach. Too bad; but it's still funny!
Rating: Summary: Not really worth it's price.. Review: The concept sounded real nice.. And it's a cute and quick read.. But nope, it's nothing like I thought it would be.. Real short explanations on various once-in-a-lifetime tough situations.. Not always realistic.. Not always practical.. Not enough content.. Again, the book has some humorous and esoteric value.. But nothing more..
Rating: Summary: hard case survival Review: taking the extremest of situations and providing advice of how to survive them. book made me a litle paranoid about what could happen in life but i guess thats why i bought it
Rating: Summary: Entertaining Review: This was a good book for entertainment purposes, but for real survival information, the U.S. Army Survival Manual is easily the best. To see how some of this information was put to use in real life, read "Danger Close" which is an excellent book that will leave you thinking. So, I say, start here, then go to the Army Survival manual for more advanced information, then read "Danger Close" to see how someone was tested in real life.
Rating: Summary: Great gift for young teen boy Review: My son just turned 13, and he was transfixed by the WCS books when he saw them. I got both this one and the travel one for his birthday, and he insisted on bringing this one to the restaurant where we celebrated his birthday. So if you're looking for a sure bet for a young teen boy, consider this book. We're probably going to order a few more copies to have on hand when our son is invited to a friend's birthday on short notice. Beats a gift certificate for sure.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining but will it work? Review: This book is interesting and entertaining BUT I wouldn't risk my life of the knowledge contained in it. It seems they found "experts" to answer each of their worst case scenarios, but with the very limted space dedicated to each "scenario", the particality of the information is questionable. Besides, most of it is common sense type stuff anyway. But, rergardless, it's a fun little book and worth a read.
