Summary: Survival can be Fascinating
Review: This is one of the most interesting and entertaining books I've ever read. But then I grew up reading myself to sleep with a very early Boy Scout Handbook and other survival manuals. And I have since written a number of books on parachutes and skydiving.

There are forty different survival challenges separated into five categories. You will discover how to escape from quicksand, exit a sinking car, get away from killer bees, take a punch and much more. For a detailed description of the book's coverage, click on Table of Contents in the left-hand column of this page.

Joshua Piven is a computer journalist, former editor at Ziff-Davis Publishing and a survivor of the Urban Jungle.

David Borgenicht is an editor, the author of several nonfiction books and an adventure traveler.

As a pilot (SEL and gliders, hang gliders and paragliders), skydiver (1,200 jumps, D-454), author and publisher of 7 books on parachutes and skydiving, I recommend this book to adventurers, the curious and anyone who leaves home. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

Summary: Adventure-Trivia Buffs should be all over this one
Review: No, you probably won't ever have to wrestle an alligator or land a plane. But wouldn't you love to know how, just for the show-off value of it?

I bought this book as a prize for a Survivor contest, and I read it in one sitting. It was hilarious! The authors manage to strike a balance between common-sense advice and over-the-top adventure.

If you like extreme adventure stories, you'll like this book!

Summary: Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook
Review: I found the book to be both entertaining and interesting. I like showing it to my friends and see their reactions. Although I will probably never use the information in the book (I'll try not to break into my sister's car just to see), just knowing you could is pretty fun.

Summary: I hope I never have to use it - but I'm glad to own it.
Review: When I first found this book - in a truck stop, of all places, I was convinced it was a gag. Wrestle an alligator? Get inside a moving train? Survive if your parachute fails to open? When I started reading, though, I discovered that the few scenarios I could judge the validity of were correct. The basics of providing an emergency cricothyrotomy are all given. The basics of emergency childbirth are correctly covered. The directions for taking shelter from gunfire agrees with everything that I've been taught to date. I can only assume that the directions for jumping from a moving motorcycle to a moving car are equally correct.

From a mechanics point of view, the chapters are very short, the text clear, and the diagrams helpful. The material is presented without the condescension that can creep into these types of books. These qualities make it a strong choice as reading material if you 1) get interrupted often, or 2) are being shot at.

I won't tell you that you need this book - if you're likely to encounter these situations at work, then your employer should be providing the education, if at home, then you should be taking a class on your own of some sort, so that you can learn in more detail. Then again, sometimes people do get stuck with a woman giving birth before the ambulance can arrive. Why should only the Boy Scouts be prepared?

Summary: It was good for a laugh
Review: The best desripation of this book is it make for great bathroom reading. I think is a fun book to flip through. As long as you just read this book and do not try jump for a car you will be fine

Summary: Learn to Return
Review: In the words of survivalist Mel "Mountain" Deweese: Learn to Return!

Whether or not you take this book seriously (actually, some parts are downright ridiculous), the spirit of "Worst-Case Scenario" is about how to outlive or remain alive even in the most dire circumstances.

The table of contents says it all:

* How to Escape from Quicksand * How to Break Down a Door * How to Ram a Car * How to Escape from a Sinking Car * How to Fend Off a Shark * How to Escape from a Mountain Lion * How to Deal with a Charging Bull * How to Win a Sword Fight * How to Escape from Killer Bees * How to Jump from a Moving Car * How to Leap from a Motorcycle to a Car * How to Perform a Tracheotomy * How to Identify a Bomb * How to Deliver a Baby in a Taxicab * How to Treat a Bullet or Knife Wound * How to Land a Plane * How to Survive if your Parachute Fails to Open * How to Survive When Lost in the Mountains

and so on ...

Summary: Worst Scenario is the Book
Review: This is the stupidest book I have ever read. its great for comedy, but I wouldnt follow any of its survival tips.

I am a VERY experienced DESERT hiker and have been certified in first aid and CPR on several occasions. The section on desert survival is just plain wrong. 1)Try to trace your footsteps back is a suggestion they give. This is actually how most people get lost. Apparently the authors seem to think that you are walking along in sand or something like that and you actually have footsteps to trace back? Anyway thats my best guess. Its a BAD idea. I suggest bringing a map in the first place, learning how to use it, and becoming familiar with the local topography. Then, if you DO get lost, use the map to find your way back.

2)They suggest hacking apart a cactus to acquire moisture/water. Hah hahahahhahaha Thats a long time urban myth. Most cacti are covered with a very hard woody exterior, and you would need a chain saw to hack them open.

Finally I must comment that an untrained person attempting to perform a tracheotomy is more likely to slice open your jugular vein than save your life.

The books good for a laugh but the writers sound like teenagers gossiping with their friends. Their advice is dangerous if you follow it explicitly.

Summary: Halarious!! (and it could save your life...;-)))
Review: That is a wonderful book!!! It's fun and entertaining!!! I just had to buy it and when my friends saw it they bought it, too!!

Summary: Everyone needs this book!
Review: If you only needed one book, this would be that book. It's packed with the stuff you really need, like how to land a place, how to jump from a moving motorcycle into a moving car, how to escape from quicksand, and how to maneuver on top of a moving train and get inside. This is a great book, a fast read, and a perfect gift for that certain loved one who always ends up in those bad situations.

Summary: Great Fun--Ignore those fools who take it too seriously
Review: I've given this book to several friends, and they all love it. It's a blast--intellectually stimulating? Maybe not. Practical? Absolutely not. But informative and a great fantasy book? Definitely. Ignore the reviewers who take it too seriously. They don't laugh much. It's a wonderful book for anyone in your life who has ever wondered "What would I do in that situation?" And besides--you never know--it may save your life.
