Rating: Summary: Not for all women Review: When I first read the description of this book, I thought it would be wonderfully empowering for all women. Not the case at all. While it is humorous at times and relatively well-written, I found the author disparaging things in my life that I find important, such as my career (attorney, apparently something to be avoided at all costs) and my health (as I belong to a group that supports my weight loss efforts, because apparently wanting to improve my health means I am a slave to the media's depiction of what a women should look like). Bottom line--don't look to this book for any guidance on how to live your life, or really any support in your attempts to be a powerful female. Read it for its humor and take it with a big grain of salt--preferably accompanied by a margarita.
Rating: Summary: Too lefty for me! Review: On the whole, I enjoyed this book. While Ms. Gillman and I do not share all the same lefty views (afterall, I am a - do I dare say it - Republican, which is apparently the worst possible thing an educated white woman in America can be) I did enjoy her humorous spin on many things we babes are presented with on a day to day basis. Her comparision of a Jazzercize class with Nazi soilders goose stepping literally had me in hysterics. She has a definate talent for seeing and pointing out the ironies in life. I did very much tire of the repeated "as my grandmother used to say-isms" sprinkled more than liberally through the pages of this book and its not like anything presented was earth shattering new news. It was a pleasant enough way to spend some free time (although the last few chapters - particulary the one on religion dragged on and on and on...) but nothing I read here is gospel. Take it for the irreverant girl power book that it is.
Rating: Summary: Attagirl!!! Review: Minus Susan Jane Gilman's attempt to deconstruct the English language by substituting regular words with her "gender sensitive" blah-blah, Kiss My Tiara is a winner! This could serve as a bible for women who want to understand themselves, men, and relationship. The combined wits and wisdom of Gilman and her very cool granny could help unhappy women appreciate themselves. If you are bothered by your annoying relatives, just imagine them as sitcom characters and everything will be alright.
Rating: Summary: Susan Jane Gilman can mentor both my daughters, and my son! Review: Thank you for valdiating my frankness and honesty for what it is-open and truthful and not just me being a smartass! Definately a book I will have both my daughters read. As well as my adult friends.Gilman's insight is honest and straightforward. Her Grandmother sounds as though she ruled her life rather than following it along. A great message for everyone, take control and don't feel bad about doing so.
Rating: Summary: PRESIDENT GILMAN? Review: I have just read this book and feel like I have been in a coma for the last 45 years. I wish that this book had been around when I was growing up. I seriously believe that this should be required reading for all high school students, male and female. Maybe it would stop a lot of heartache. Ms Gilman has a message that should be shouted from the rooftops. Funny, witty and a great read, but most of all SANE! I especially liked the comment about "down there' "where, Perth?" as Perth is my home town. Run for Congress or something, please, Ms Gilman, yours is a voice that desperately needs to be heard. Mothers, buy this book for your daughters.
Rating: Summary: I finished it and mailed it to my best friend the same day Review: This is a book you share.. One of my friends had read this book last year and said I would like it, and so when I saw it on the shelf, I picked it up... I am so happy I did.. It is an empowering book about how to be a fabulous woman. Several of us who read the book now met for lunch the other day, we had a "what is your favorite part?" discussion and all had different sections to relate. I especially love the section on Women and how they apologize.. even to table legs and other inanimate objects. If you are looking for an uplifting, funny book that speaks truth about being fabulous, pick it up... You will not find all that self help slush here but just observations about grabbing life by the horns and taking it for wild ride. I highly recommend you have a copy and give to whatever woman you know that needs a lift.
Rating: Summary: I admit...I am a smartmouth Goddess! Review: I've always considered myself a smartmouth goddess. Susan Jane Gilman's book convinced me I'm on the right track. This book is funny and true. Peppered with sayings her grandmother came up with (Or Gilman thought would be more amusing coming from her grandmother), this book is a treat to read and laugh over. My one suggestion though would to not read it front to back. This book goes better if you pick it up and read a bit here and a bit there, like a buffet, picking and choosing what you're in the mood for. A straight reading might slow it down a bit and I don't think you need to read good humor books front to back at any rate. So, if you are already a smartmouth godddess or long to be one, this is a good starting point.
Rating: Summary: EMPOWERING AND FUNNY! Review: If you need something to boost your self esteem or give you a sense of entitlement this is the book for you! It's written like your best friends is talking to you. Some sections are take it or leave it section but I think most women readers would enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Started it laughing, finished it angry Review: Susan Jane Gilman is obviously a gifted writer with a great feel for combining outrage with humour, but all in all, I was a pretty disappointed. When I bought this book, I was expecting a funny, smart, insightful treatise on feminism in 2001. It started out great, but by halfway through had devolved into what I can only describe as a myopic political rant. While I agree with most of Gilman's sentiments, the message was clear that if I didn't agree with all of it 100%, I was somehow letting down the sisterhood. I started this book laughing and ended it angry. Goddesses are a vibrant, diverse, and colourful lot. Trying to paint us in black and white will never do us justice.
Rating: Summary: Amen, Sister!! Review: Girls, time to wake up and smell the stink of what we've been fed so far. Ready to get real?? Ms. Gilman (& and her grandmother) will show you how to handle your monthly you-know-what, how to manuver around your relatives at the thanksgiving dinner table, how to learn everything by shopping and why "the real girl power lies between our ears". Fun to read, funny, and liberating, a must for every girl to woman everywhere.
