Rating: Summary: Horrible - read below... Review: I was totally misled by the title of this book. Being somewhat of a wise-crack myself, I thought I would agree with Gilman's philosophies. Not so. I absolutely, positively did NOT enjoy reading about lesbians and feminists, nor did I care for her Republican-bashing - such was the majority of Gilman's writings. The book is very one-sided, and I don't recommend it at all to any straight, educated, and sophisticated woman.
Rating: Summary: Not for me Review: Kiss my Tiara was not what I was expecting at all. I'm a happily married thirty something with children Catholic Republican and I was quite disappointed. My views of being a smartmouth goddess differ from Ms. Gilmans, but hats off to her for getting out there with her opinions.
Rating: Summary: As a Gift... Review: I gave a copy of this book to my sister as a gift six months ago and she is STILL raving. Great gift for anyone looking to entertain someone.
Rating: Summary: Laugh Out Loud funny everytime, yet truly poignant Review: Each chapter of Kiss My Tiara takes on issues that pertinent to women everywhere and manages to draw on the small things we can all connect to. At that point Susan J. Gilman proceeds to give you great advice... and practically make you pee in your pants. She's that funny! I love to pick this book up in my spare time and re-read a chapter on the topic of my choice (each chapter stands on its own). Come birthdays and holidays I'm always buying another copy to give to one of my girlfriends. She's really got a great way of looking at the world. She makes a critique or two of some aspects of feminism, but overall she's definitely a feminist and has created a fun advice book for those of us who think there's more to life than tricking a man into marrying you (aka The Rules).
Rating: Summary: Opionated and Open, A Great Book Review: Kiss My Tiara is perhaps one of the most outspoken, truthful accounts of the female life this century. Not only does author Susan Jane Gilman piece together an array of quirky titles, quotes and humor, she also pairs it with intelligence and raw honesty. Though a bit overly feministic at times, I still gave the book 5 stars, because in my opinion it doesn't have to be something you agree with completely. Rather it's a great view into the life of an incredibly eccentric, interesting writer with a lot on her mind. I enjoyed her thoughts, and agreed with most of them, because they depicted a lot about life without sugar coating it. I recommend this book to anyone who's looking to sit down and laugh at how truthful such a book can get.
Rating: Summary: A little redundent Review: The idea is right but repeating the same concept six different ways gets annoying. I realize the book was created so the reader can jump around but I think that leads Gilman to reiterate her ideas to ensure she gets it in every chapter. Still a pretty decent read.
Rating: Summary: Funny! Review: This book was hilarious! As a thirty-ish singleton, I could identify on so many levels with what Ms. Gilman was talking about and found myself laughing out loud at many sections (on a plane no less, so sometimes more of muffled snickers). It's kind of a hands on, advice giving Bridget Jones' Diary. Definitely recommend to any woman.
Rating: Summary: hilarious and on-target --- wish I had read it years ago Review: This book rocks as it shows you how you already rule -- you just didn't know it! What great advice after years of books with flowery sentimental tones for being a woman --- books that made you sorry you ever picked them up. Here is an advice book that tells you to stop feeling sorry for yourself and go to Vegas, baby! Whoo-hoo! You can read it sequentially or skip around the chapters, but either way, you'll feel great about yourself and your viewpoint will change for the better. It's like you sprayed yourself with some kind of Insta-goddess perfume -- it will linger for hours afterwards.
Rating: Summary: borrow it from library Review: Nothing new or profound, however it is good for a laugh.
Rating: Summary: More than a fun read (although it is hilarious!) Review: This is a book all women should read. I know, it has been said before about many books, but this is a very important book. Susan Jane Gilman has a way of writing that made me laugh out loud. Yet, this is a serious book, too. It is about the rights for women to be exactly what they want to be. It is about how hard it still is to be a woman. However, Susan Jane Gilman does not whine. At all. Instead, she offers support, a good laugh and actually good solutions. This is not a book that makes women victims, rather heroines. Kiss my tiara actually penetrates our society of today and has a surprisingly interesting, clever and clear view about many issues otherwise described only either in thesises or women's magazines. What is love? How can we be happy? Why are looks so important? This book offers useful ammunition for all women. By following her advice, and applying her ways of thinking, we can all become strong women, goddesses, heroines ... Susan Jane Gilman uses wit, intelligence and common sense to make us see another picture of our society, and how it could be. It is thought-provoking reading. Also, she shows us how to get the most out of what we already know and can do, by simply adopting these techniques and skills to other areas of life. And no, as she says: "We Don't Shape History by Shaping Our Thighs".
