Rating: Summary: What a fun and empowering book! Review: What a great book! I bought this as a gift for my friend, and I may end up buying a copy for myself--a warning though: this is not for anyone who may be offended easily with language. I loved the chapter on "if you can't order french fries, you can't ask for a raise"--it's so true the way women have to make excuses or berate themselves for ordering french fries in a restaurant with their friends. Gilman use of "goddess knows" or "good goddess" got on my nerves a bit, but the rest of the book was great.
Rating: Summary: Trying to be a Sweet Potatoe Queen Review: Ok - I have read two of the Sweet Potato Queen books and adored them. This one is doing a poor imitation - read about half of the book and put it on the shelf. Yawn!
Rating: Summary: Perfectly hilarious! Review: Kiss My Tiara is the kind of book you buy yourself two copies of, one to read, and the other to stare lovingly at and pet occasionally. Susan Gilman takes situations that are every day and mundane and shows you the humor in them. She tells all women that we are smart, beautiful, and the gender not to mess with. If you need a confidence booster, want a good laugh, or just missed out on some much needed girl-talk, then this is the book you're looking for! BUY!
Rating: Summary: Very positive, extremely funny, feel-good-but-not-too-girlis Review: Strongly recommended to everyone!!! I've reread the book when I feel down! Gives me energy, makes me laugh.I want to jump and go out and make the world a better place. One of the most affirming books I've read. Gilman is an amazing author. To the point, very strong arguments, has done her research, and that humor... Oh, my god!!! Hei, and I even have a killer comeback to "when are you gonna get yourself a boyfriend" :)
Rating: Summary: Best Book Ever Review: I got in trouble for reading this book at my desk. I was laughing so hard, that I was disturbing my entire office (not to mention that for two days I got nothing accomplished because I could NOT put it down). This book is witty, engaging and fun. Unlike a lot of modern books on being a woman in the new millenium, I never felt lectured to, condescended to, or bored. It feels like you are having a conversation with one of your savy, sassy girlfriends.
Rating: Summary: Smart, Savy..... a MUST-READ! Review: Finally! Some aknowledgement that it's not easy being a woman in America! We are told that women in other countries have it much worse; that they are oppressed, covered, treated as property, and they don't have rights. Well, it's good to know that we don't get THAT kind of treatment, but consider this: In America, we women are afraid of walking outside alone at night. We don't get paid as much as men do in most careers. We are harassed, both in the workplace and on the street. Politicians (mainly Republicans) try to control out bodies. There is pressure to look like the girl on the cover of Glamour magazine at all costs. We are ALWAYS dieting. There is an enormous pressure to be "nice". We wear shoes that HURT. We are rushing out to get implants, plastic surgery, and liposuction. The list goes on. Kiss My Tiara offers both inciteful and humerous advice to deal with the many situations and problems that women face today. It challenges the beliefs of both feminists and conservatives alike, and assures us that we are all fighting the same battle. It points out both the irony and unfairness in the behaviors between the sexes, and uses language that modern girls understand. Some religious groups, as well as Republicans, may feel like their beliefs are being challenged and attacked. Gilman has strong views about Pro-Choice, politics, and sexuality. If you are strongly opposed to abortion, follow "The Rules", and Kathie Lee Gifford is your role model, don't bother picking up this book. You'll probably be offended. It's not for everyone. However, for the rest of us, this book can be used as a modern survival guide. There are techniques for scaring stalkers and psychos, exploiting PMS to gain politican leverage, and dealing with our families at the holidays. Gilman lets us know that it's OK if we're not sugary-sweet all the time, and it's not wrong if we chose to become bisexual or lesbian. Sprinkled with advice from her savy Grandmother, this is a must-read for teenagers and adults alike. Goddess knows, we need all the help we can get!
Rating: Summary: I bought multiple copies Review: I bought about 5 copies of this based mostly on the title, which has got to be one of the all time best. Loved the sarcasm, the smart-mouthed attitude, but I began to skim and get a little turned off about 3/4 of the way through. A mean or bitter streak slipped into her writing, and suddenly the message was political with a nastier edge, more mean than sassy. However, even with that caveat, it's a great quickie gift for a girlfriend who needs to get over a lover and get a Life!
Rating: Summary: A note of caution Review: First of all, I must confess that I only skimmed this book -and was glad I did so before purchasing online. I'm sure some women will get something out of this book, but I personally found the language quite coarse. If you are looking for a helpful guide to improving yourself or etc., then you might be dissapointed. The frequent four-letter words were off-putting and made the book seem a little negative and not credible...just a note of caution.
Rating: Summary: The tiara's not so sparkly Review: "Feminism lite"... at best. While Gilman makes some noteworthy points to consider, she doesn't take them any further. She misses some valuable opportunities to really challenge traditional stereotypes and mindsets. It is not to be confused with any kind of feminist treatise. In addition, the editing is TERRIBLE!! Writing with an informal, conversational tone is great, but when the phrase "Yeah, well" is used so often (in an attempt to sound edgy and "I'm-young-educated-and-I-have-an-attitude") that it becomes tiresome, the style just grates. Save your money and go read Betty Friedan.
Rating: Summary: Still laughing! Review: I loved this book so much that I bought copies for all of my closet girlfriends. Smart, funny, and full of sarcastic wit (my favorite kind!) it offers a good time to anyone who is up for a lot of laughs and is in need of some comic reassurance! :o)
