Rating: Summary: What You're Afraid to Say Review: Susan Gilman takes what many think and fell and actually puts it in to words. She does not sugar coat at all what she writes. This book can be very empowering. Ultra conservatives will hate it, guaranteed. But she is ready for that, guaranteed and will probably be writing a book soon about what she thinks about that. Susan gives women that it is ok to be women. That we don't have to be what many in society have tried to create us to be. She tells us, it's ok to drink, it's ok to have fun, it's ok not to be married and sometimes way better, it's ok not to always be nice. She examines real issues with humor and wit, making fun of the reasons why we have established these ideas. For once we do not have to make excuses for the reason that we women do things. No excuses for why we like to have sex, no excuses to why we become bitchy during "that time of the month", no excuses to why we can't be just as powerful as any man out there. A great guide to, well, just living.
Rating: Summary: Fumbling with my Tiara... Review: This is the smartest most entertaining book I've read in a long time. Makes me wonder where those other goddesses are out there that share Susan Janes Gilman's convictions because I'd like to make their acquaintance. If you're a part-time rabble-rouzer for the "Holy Cause Sisterhood" and you haven't read this book yet...time to straighten up your Tiara and dive in!
Rating: Summary: About as subtle as a mack truck Review: Sarah Jane Gilman does have some important points to make. It's a shame she does so in such an obnoxious way. As for the "humor" in this book, it escaped me. A liberal dousing of the "f" and the "p" words doesn't make something funny. BTW, I'm a total leftie single white female who works full time and goes to grad school, so I'm not sniffling because it offended my sensibilities -- more like it made me roll my eyes. I gave up after the chapter featuring 50 ways to say the word "penis" (ha, ha, ha, ha, ha).
Rating: Summary: Offensive! Review: After reading "THe Sweet Potato Queens" trilogy I was thirsty for some more of Jill Conner Browne's quick wit and hilarious stories. Amazon recommended "Kiss My Tiara" based on my past purchases. I was SORELY disappointed. This book is offensive to say the least. The author is obviously an angry liberal who needed an outlet and wrote a book because nobody wanted to listen to her garbage. This is nothing compared to the sweet potato queen's empowering female stories. Sadly, I tried my best to finish this book but was unable to and had to do the worst thing possible for a book lover, I had to throw it away. I was just too afraid that if I let it live someone else might read it or worse yet, may think I actually agree with it just by mere fact that I own it. I can't say enough about this depressing, angry tirade of a book!
Rating: Summary: Sadly Unimpressed Review: I was so looking forward to reading this book, and I hate the fact that I could not even finish it. What a let down. There are some bits that are funny. My favorites were the quotes from her grandmother. But as the pages turn she seems to be saying the same thing over and over and over again. She almost sounds bitter and that is really no fun. And she makes a lot of lists. This is suppose to be a witty, girl power book not a how-to book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent for All Beta Goddesses! Review: This book should be a must read for older teenage girls. Yes, the language can be a bit raw, but trying to shelter your child or yourself from reality won't get you too far. You might as well live under a rock. Republicans, this book isn't for you (too complicated). I gave my 15 year old niece this book. It's good to see women thinking and acting independantly. Kudos to you, Ms. Gilman!
Rating: Summary: ruled by emotions Review: I am a connoisseur of these type books. This is the one I buy on a regular basis for all my friends. It's the one on my night stand that I flip through for refresher courses. It is THE book to buy! You will not regret it.
