Rating: Summary: For when your Life Needs a Little Sparkle and Lots of Laughs Review: It's hard to describe the Sweet Potato Queens in just a few words. But I'll try. They are, quite simply, the sassiest, naughtiest, funniest and most eye-catching gang of women in the entire United States and probably the whole world. And I'm not saying that just because I'm the official Book Editor to the Queens. I'm saying that because it's the Gospel truth, and you will be saying it too, once you've read this book. The Queens' founder and leader, Jill Conner Browne, has taken it upon herself to pen this irreverent, shamelessly funny and wise look at life, love, marriage and friendship. She's distilled years of love, laughter, partying, margarita-drinking and chicken-frying into this hilarious book-the only guide to life you will ever need. Must-read chapters include: Boyfriend and Fiances: Getting them and Getting Over Them; The Five Magic Words Guranteed to Get Any Man to Do Your Bidding; and Be Prepared for Anything, On Account of You Just Never Know. Aside from being the funniest woman alive, Jill Conner Browne is also a mom, a humor columnist and fitness instructor. Her hilarious e-mails bring productivity to a complete halt here at Random House and this book is a hot favorite already. This is one of those books you can't resist passing along to a friend. Everyone from Fannie Flagg and Kaye Gibbons to Kinky Friedman and Roy Blount have gone gaga over the Queens. Buy the book. I promise...you will not be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: The ULTIMATE Guide to Good Living! Review: I must say that I was flabbergasted when I read the chapter on "The Promise". I thought my girlfriends and I had invented that concept years ago and here it was in black and white for all the world to see! This book should be required reading for every female upon reaching puberty---to better understand the male mind. These Queens have it all figured out and share "it" with such hilarious results that you'll want to read this book over and over and buy copies for all of your friends. I plan to give my Mama a copy since she's from Mississippi herself and will certainly understand the joie de vivre of the Queens. The recipes at the end of the book are fabulous and worth the price of the book. I must say my very favorite chapter was the last one, Chapter 14. Us Southern Belles have the concept of doing JackSh** down to an art, but Jill defines it so beautifully that it brought tears to my big brown eyes! Jill, Laissez les bontemps roullez, cher, and keep on keeping on!
Rating: Summary: Start here... Review: This is the first installment in "The Sweet Potato Queens" series by Jill Conner Browne. I have not laughed this hard since I first discovered Louis Grizzard. While lolling about, my best friend and I love to read this book aloud to each other!!! True story: I 'lost' my first copy so I purchased another. After being MIA for a year my first copy resurfaced and I still won't let ANYONE borrow it. Instead, if I want someone to enjoy this book I buy them one of their own. It's as if Miss Browne has been inside my head and/or heard some of my conversations! After reading this first installment you will crawl outta your brain to read the next. This author is intelligent and expresses so much logical truth. This book is the "southern" book for all women.
Rating: Summary: Woman Empowered, Inc. Review:
This is a mighty fine book. It is a bunch of vignettes of how a woman and her friends empower themselves. It really is quite a good book, just the attitude adjustment that these women undergo is priceless. Certainly it is a gross exaggeration of real life, but still it is uplifting.
Rating: Summary: amusing Review: It's amusing, though I haven't been rolling in tears. The attitudes verges on annoying and downright stupid. They're so over the top that it's hard to relate to them the way some might relate to the humor in other single-women-drama chick lit like Bridget Jones Diary. On the other hand, if you loosen up and don't take it seriously, it's a fun, light read with some good recipes.
Rating: Summary: Charming and Entertaining From Cover to Cover Review: Jill Conner Browne is just delightful. Every time I open this book, I sit back on the couch with a glass of wine and feel like I'm curling up with a good friend. An outrageous, big-haired, loudmouthed friend, bless her heart.
Amid recipes involving bacon and far too much cheese, Browne delights with a philosophy of self-love in the best possible sense. Clearly, her family and friends are the most important things in the world to her, and next comes getting the most out of life one possibly can.
Contrary to popular opinion, one need not be from the South, have big hair or even be a woman (Hi, George!) to be a Sweet Potato Queen. The love of a good drink and a solid appreciation for not doing jack - well, you know - are definite plusses, though.
Long live the Sweet Potato Queens!
Rating: Summary: Funny, raunchy (in a good way!), HYSTERICAL!!! Review: SPQ Book of Love has got to be one of the funniest, raunchiest ( and I say this in a good way!), hysterical books I have read in a while, with just a touch of truth to make some serious points among all the funny ones.
This book is "narrated" by a woman whose self proclaimed goal is to loll around endlessly accomplishing as little as possible......and yet she is truly a driven soul. These are her and her queenly courts views on life, beauty, men and just being fully Southern. Some of the escapades are so outrageous you will laugh out loud and some are blushingly blunt. The advice given is too funny, but sometimes a girl has gotta do what a girl has gotta do!! Some of "life's rules" that are revealed will astound and/or delight you........such as the dressing properly for a party rule!!
This is a fun book that is the perfect read for those days when lolling around for the day is your intent.
Rating: Summary: A Hoot! Review: I'd like to agree with the reviewer who said it's a little much. I realize this book is extremely popular, but I just got a little bored. The best comedy is written by Bruce Cameron, Dave Barry, and Cathryn Michon. For a hearty laugh, check out one of those authors.
