Rating: Summary: A Queen admirer Review: I found this book quite by accident and am so glad I did. I read it in one day because I couldn't stop giggling. I can relate to the "Queens" and their need for "lolling" in the bath tub as well as the chocolate "fixes". Anyone that reads this book will surely understand what it is really like to feel as though you have the power to rule the world (or at least those around you). I went running to the bookstore the very next day for several more copies (no, way am I giving mine up)to send as gifts. Thanks, Ms. Browne, for writing such a wonderful book and I can't wait for the next installment. It is good to know that there is a little "Suzanne Sugerbaker" in all of us.
Rating: Summary: A must read for every female Review: I loved this book - I pick it up whenever I am feeling sad and it makes me laugh out loud. I am from the east coast and after reading this book I have to attend the annual parade. I read the reviewer who said it set women back - oh contrare - I found it to be a refreshing celebration of women and the special bond that only women share with each other.
Rating: Summary: PRAISE FROM A JACKSON MISSISSIPPI GIRL Review: As someone who spent my college years and beyond going to Mal's St. Patty's Day Parades in Jackson, I enjoyed every minute of reminiscing with the Sweet Potato Queens about those times. Just the mention of Hal and Mal's or State Street bring back very fond memories. You don't have to be from Jackson or even a southerner to enjoy this hilarious look at life. But it sure makes it come to life! People who haven't experienced the St. Paddy's Day Festivities in Jackson just don't know what they are missing, but Jill sure gave them some idea!
Rating: Summary: Ames Iowa GETS IT! Review: Des Moines is not my fault! We are crazy about the Queens and plan to attend St. Patrick's day in Jackson, MS next year. This little book is a great big value. Pass it on.
Rating: Summary: Setting equality between the genders back a mile...... Review: I know this book is supposed to be funny but really, in this day and age, is male bashing and trying to glorify some of the stupidest habits of the female population humorous? Tongue in cheek is one thing but we all know which cheeks were being referred to thoughout most of this wretched little farce. Don't waste your money..........
Rating: Summary: Order extra---all your friends will want yours. Review: When I first picked up this book I was killing time one Friday evening (feeling a little sorry for myself for not having a hot date). Within a few pages I was laughing out loud so hard that people were staring. I knew I would buy it regardless of price. All evening I laughed until I almost lost my breath. Three quarters of the way through I started e-mailing everyone I knew to RUN and find the book. For any Southern woman (or sympathetic poor soul from somewhere else) it is a must. Am ordering a copy for my soon to be 71 year old Mother and extras for my favorite friends. I think Mother will get most of it, and the parts she's fuzzy on we will explain. A couple of Knock You Naked Margaritas ought to take care of it. An absolutely perfect way to feel better within minutes of starting it. Jill Connor Browne may say the things that I have always thought better than anyone alive.
Rating: Summary: A Man's View... Review: Okay... if not the funniest book I ever read, certainly ONE of the funniest! I KNOW women just like these ladies. They may not admit it, but deep down inside, they ALL want to be a queen! This is a must read if you guys want to understand what makes a southern gal "tick". Be prepared to be humbled a bit, though!
Rating: Summary: funniest book ever Review: Quick! Someone give me a gold pen so that I can fill in the other half of that 5th star on the ratings. Not only does this book deserve the full five but I might draw in 5 extra stars. It has to be the funniest book I've ever read. Buy it now!
Rating: Summary: Northern thoughts on southern belles Review: There are few books out there that speak to the generation of women currently trudging through their forties and fifties. Fewer still that do it with any kind of humour, joy, wisdom and attitude. The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love does and does it in spades. Who among us could not love a book about women that does not once mention estrogen replacement therapy, but does speak long and lovingly of Fat Mama's Knock You Naked Marguerita Mix? The Sweet Potato Queens represent a celebration of what we are; outrageous, loyal, funny, smart and real. Oh so real. It makes this reader want to ditch my Northern Canadian pasty white demeanour, find me a big old red wig and something with enough sequins to blind a sled dog. You go girls.
Rating: Summary: Delightfully Southern Review: This book was full of the light hearted humor of the South. The chapters each focused on a specific subject and contained humorous advice, laced with truth. The recipes are great! I sampled two of them with wonderul results. Anyone who has had a friend from the South, or lived there, will find this book endearing. I ordered one for each member of my family!
