Summary: Ridiculous...
Review: If you're looking for a humor book, something to make you laugh, this book is right up your alley. If you're looking for a book that actually gives you well-researched, *safe* and healthy advice for you and your baby -- Ms. Iovine's glib and dangerously inaccurate throwaway quips about everything from c-sections to breastfeeding are mind-boggling in their wrongness -- please go read "A Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" by Henci Goer instead.

Again, this is a humor book. Whether you find Ms. Iovine's sense of humor actually funny or if you find her complete cluelessness about real pregnancy and birth issues laughable, that's your call. But please don't count on this woman for sound pregnancy advice.

Summary: Don't Risk It
Review: This is a well-written, humorous book and it is much different from the other pregnancy books. There is some good advice about what to wear when you're pregnant (although nowadays there are so many nice maternity clothing stores out there) but my objection is that she basically tells the pregnant woman not to worry too much about following all of the nutrition, etc. guidlines given in most other pregnancy books. I read this during my first pregnancy and thought there was something appealing to the carefree approach Vicki takes in the book. However, I can not get over the guilt from having a miscarriage with that pregnancy. Had I followed the other, more strict-types of pregnancy books I may not have felt quite as guilty, whether or not that would even have anything to do with it. Vicki does mention that many of her friends have had miscarriages; however, I believe she states that she never has. It may be easier to take such a light attitude towards pregnancy when one has never experienced a miscarriage.

Summary: A little humor might ease the pre- and postpartum dementia
Review: I laughed out loud throughout both of Iovine's books. She is just so funny at three in the morning. And after the doom and gloom of the "What to Expect" series, she was at least encouraging. You'll survive all this, albeit with a few stretch marks. I liked how she focuses on the mother and makes you feel a little more normal while your body is being taken over by aliens. Think Sigourney Weaver. All in all, these are more humor than how-to books, though I'm looking forward to the toddler sequel. If you want a how-to manual, see Dr. Sears series (love the attachment parenting perspective).

Summary: GREAT FOR A LAUGH
Review: I LOVED this book. All the other pregnancy books scared me. They were all doom and gloom, making you think you had every thing wrong with you. If you've had difficult pregnancies, buy this book. It's good for a laugh. Loved it.

Summary: The Perfect Baby Shower Gift Consists Of These Books...
Review: I thought that this was by far the best pregnancy information book on the market. Combine the books, "A Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy...", "Babytales:A Pregnancy Companion", "The Baby Book..." and "The Child Whisperer"...throw in some diapers and formula and you have the greatest BABY SHOWER gift ever!!!

Summary: A great addition to pregnancy books!
Review: I understand some of the criticism this book has received, but feel that your thoughts on the book will be determined by how you approach it. If you want a medical book that will give you all the details -- the risks, the facts, the official recommendations -- this book is not for you. If you want advice from your best friends who has gone through pregnancy, this book is for you. If your best friends, your mother, and the other women in your life aren't around -- or you simply want to hear it from another woman -- this book is perfect for you. I found The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy to be candid, funny and down-to-earth -- just what I need during my first pregnancy. I found it helpful (and reassuring) to read about when real women gain weight, an informal look at how your body changes, and issues women run into with their partners. The book has information you're not going to run into the factual "XYZ" Guide to Pregnancy. It's not the only book to get, rather, a wonderful addition to the more medically-oriented books on pregnancy that are also valuable to read.

Summary: yuk yuk YUK!
Review: I can understand having some personal pearls of wisdom to share, but where EXACTLY does this woman obtain her facts from?? Is she claiming to be an expert at pregnancy issues by virtue of the fact that she has givven birth 4 times? I surely hope not. I found the book to have a negative and hateful tone to it, excusing nasty behavior which is rude in any circumstance, one which seems to want to exclude men from the birthing process altogether. I think the author needs a reality check and a taste of her own advice...ATTENTION AUTHOR: "MEN, CONTRARY TO YOUR OWN POPULAR BELIEFS MAY ACTUALLY BE SENSITIVE AND GENUINELY CARING, WITH A SINCERE DESIRE TO BE INVOLVED WITH THEIR SIGNIFICANT OTHERS AND SUPPORTIVE DURING THE PREGNANCY!! NOT ALL MEN ARE INSENSITIVE LETCHES WHO ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN PAWING THEIR WIVES..." This book has some value though, I used it as fireplace kindling....DONT waste your money.

Summary: Must have for any first time mommy-to-be
Review: This is what it should be like when you have no idea what to expect the first time you have a baby. This book covers all the gore and surprises that are in store for any first timer. I have given my copy to many and have even stopped pregnant women in the book section to tell them about this one. A definiet must have on your shelf.

Summary: A Good Lift!
Review: A friend gave me this one when our tests came back positive. I laughed my head off and felt much less alone in the whole experience. It's the perfect antidote to the What to Expect series, which I found a little censorious. Vicki Iovine is frequently irreverent, always humorous, but after all is said and done, she gives her readers a good dose of reality. My best endorsement is that I'd give this one as a gift to any pregnant girlfriends.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: The manhating, yuppified, self centered guide to pregnancy
Review: All I need to say further is that in one chapter of the book, Ms. Iovine has the nerve to say that you should should expect your husband to cheat on you if you don't have sex with him regularly while you are pregnant. She also suggests an extra stitch after an (in her world) obligatory episiotomy to "tighten things up down there."

Furthermore, in Ms. Iovine's world, single women apparantly do not get pregnant, nor do nonbody obsessed women, or women who have more things to do than whine.
