Rating: Summary: Ick. Review: The recipes in this book are all mock meat and dairy dishes. If you like real vegan food, I recommend staying a hundred feet away from this book at all times. Try "The Voluptuous Vegan", "The Modern Vegetarian Kitchen", or "The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen" instead. If you want a book by Stepaniak, buy "The Vegan Sourcebook" instead -- the recipes in that book aren't as bad (they aren't that great either), but it's very well written and contains tons of relevant information for vegans (i.e. why circuses are not vegan). The only reason I gave this book two stars is because of the "veganisms" that she has in this book. What to say instead of "how to kill two birds with one stone" and stuff like that and because of the animal stories from farm sanctuary. I don't think those two things are worth the purchase. Stay away.
Rating: Summary: Culinary Brain Surgery Review: This book doesn't fail in providing varied, delicious recipes, but I don't reccomend it unless you can spare (and enjoy spending) hours preparing and cooking these recipes; and unless you are an experienced and well-versed vegan. Some of the recipes call for ingredients which are intimidating or just plain inaccessible for some new vegans, while others require impractical purchases which cannot be used in other recipes. When I have the time for the preparation these recipes require, I definitely refer to this book for tofu marinades and gravies. The mushroom stroganoff is delectable as well. Bottom line: if want simple, inexpensive, quick meals to produce at the end of your busy day, this book is probably not for you.
Rating: Summary: One of my All-Time Favorite Cookbooks! Review: This book is full of wonderful, easy recipes and uplifting snippets about compassionate living. My copy is covered in food stains and completely dog-eared from being so well used and well-loved. I have made countless dishes from this book with excellent results, and I am not an accomplished chef by any means! Highly recommended-- a great choice for new and seasoned veg*ns alike.
Rating: Summary: Great food! Review: This cookbook has a great variety of tasty vegan dishes. Some of my favorites are the phenomenal french toast, crock cheeze, cheddary cheeze soup, hot&sour seitan steak salad, citrus vinaigrette dressing, messy mikes, sothern fried tofu (very yummy), and the World's best and easiest chocolate pudding. The pudding is enough of a reason to have this book in your kitchen as it is the best pudding I have ever had in my life :) This book also has nutritional information and cute quote substitutes that are animal friendly like "Don't look for bugs in a flower bouquet" in place of "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If you still need one more reason to have this book just picture the heavenly ultra-fudgey fudge brownies baking in your oven!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful vegan cookbook Review: This cookbook is great because not only does it have tasty recipes, it also contains very good information about veganism. There are photos of some of the animals at Farm Sanctuary as well. One of my all-time favorite recipes in this book is "Southern Fried Tofu." Talk about tasty! This dish is out-of-this-world! Tastes great with some vegan mashed potatoes.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book! Review: This fantastic cookbook is as much a voice of the animals and people of the Farm Sanctuary as it is a celebration of vegan lifestyle and cooking. In addition to hundreds of delicious recipes, there are several sections on the philosophy of veganism, a nutrition overview, a meal-planning guide, a list of suggested substitutes for animal products, a glossary of special ingredients, and much more. Many of the recipes are remakes of meat, egg and dairy favorites, giving the new or aspiring vegan a good place to start when the prospect of "the big switch" seems impossible or overwhelming. Some examples include: Seitan Salami, Pepperoni, and Pastrami, Tofu Bacon, Nut Milks, Phenomenal French Toast, Almond Crème Cheeze, Onion Lover's Chip Dip, Grilled Cheeze Sandwiches, Classic Quiche, Tempeh Tacos, Stick-to-Your-Ribs Chili, and Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Rating: Summary: A Must For Any Kitchen! Review: This is a brilliant all-round book on vegan cooking. Joanne's caring, compassion and enthusiam shine through and you just want to try every recipe. Every recipe I've tried has been a masterpiece, I don't know where she got all her ideas from. The book really expands your horizons on eating from the old veges, grains and bean style of cooking. I just love the Grilled Cheeze Sandwiches, The BBQ-style Short"Ribs", and the best mayonnaise- it really beats any animal based mayonnaise I've ever tried. I've said enough! Just buy the book, and you'll never look back! Oh, and it's a really nice touch having the animal rescue stories and photos and the work of Farm Sanctuary. And there is a nutritional analysis of all the recipes, and menu suggestions.
Rating: Summary: easy and good cooking Review: This is one of many books in my vegan library. I find the recipes very simple to follow. The ingredients are common and easy to find. The meal prepartion is fast and simple, and the end result is delicious!
Rating: Summary: Great book. disagree with NYC reader below... Review: This is one of my favorite cookbooks. This book is filled with delicious recipes. Many recipes include soy products, many do not (seitan is not a soy product, fyi.) Some of my soy-free favorites are Eggless Omelets, Phenomenal French Toast (delicious!), Muffins that taste like donuts, Incredible Almond Creme Cheeze, and Kale and Kraut Sandwiches. Plus, Chick Peas A La King and Chilibean Macaroni are staples in my home. Whether you like soy or not, you'll find this book has recipes for you. Plus, the stories about Farm Sanctuary's animals are truly delightful and inspiring. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: Tons of easy vegan recipes! Review: This is the vegetarian/vegan cookbook I use most often with the highest success rate (100%) of all other cookbooks I own. Vegan Vittles was my first encounter with veganism and is one of the reasons I "went vegan". Joanne did a wonderful job of putting this cookbook together.
