Rating: Summary: YUMMY! Review: I had been searching for a vegan, healthy carrot cake and Aunt Bunny's Carrot Cake was my answer! It's delicious...especially and tofu creme cheeze frosting. I also recommend the Spicy Peanut Sauce (I substituted almond butter for peanut butter). I served them with spring rolls and they were a hit! This book is full of wonderful recipes to make any health-conscious vegan very happy!
Rating: Summary: my vegan bible Review: I happen to love this cookbook. It is the staple I always turn to, after buying several other vegan cookbooks before and being thoroughly disappointed. I make the gooey grilled cheeze at least once a week (works up really quick if I get home late from work!), and have loved everything I've tried. If maple syrup were cheaper, I'd have a constant supply of the maple custard around! This book is full of everyday recipes that are suitable for anyone. Depending on meal presentation and what sides you serve, it can be a small family meal or dinner party worthy. The recipes are not horribly complicated or full of crazy ingredients or flavors (my main issues with How it all vegan and Voluptous Vegan, which collect dust on my shelf now). Thanks to Vegan Vittles, I became a huge fan of Jo Stepaniak's recipes and have gone on to buy Ultimate Uncheese, Saucy Vegetarian and others. VV is full of a great variety of recipes that are certified fabulous!
Rating: Summary: This is the greatest book! Review: I have a HUGE collection of vegetarian/vegan cookbooks and i personally feel that this is the greatest one i have ever bought and that i own! Very informative and helpful! After reading the information that is in this book I have switched from Vegetarian to straight Vegan and will never look back. Definately recommend! On my way to buy "The Uncheese Cookbook now"!
Rating: Summary: Vegan Cooking Made Simple Review: I have been a vegan for the past two years and have found that I keeping turning to this book for a great no-fool recipe plan. Some of the recipes, most notably the pumpkin pie, are extremely simple and don't call for a bunch of ingredients you've never heard of, nevertheless, they turn out absolutely fabulous. If you aren't looking to spend two and a half hours slaving over the stove to prepare a healthy vegan meal, then this is the book for you. I recommend it above ALL others!
Rating: Summary: Best vegan cookbook I have ever used. Review: I have been using this cookbook since September of 1997. Every recipe I have tried has been delicious. All ingredients are easy to come by in my local health food store. Try the lemon date squares. They are out of this world.
Rating: Summary: Exciting and Easy! Review: I have been wanting some easy recipes especially for lunches and there are plenty to choose from here. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will certainly take the back seat now.!
Rating: Summary: JANE ZUKIN HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD WITH THIS ONE Review: I just bought this book because I have a major stomach problem since birth from stomach cancer. Im always looking for help with ideas and information.
Her book gives some great recipe ideas and truths about how to make the best of foods with a "wacky tummmy". (my phrase there)Nutrional information with some yummy recipes.
JOB WELL DONE.
Rating: Summary: Good Vegan Junk Food Recipes Review: I like this book. The recipes in it taste pretty good. Most are mock versions of meat recipes, often cleverly and pretty satisfactorily achieved. But be warned that they are not particularly healthy. Many recipes require nutritional yeast (to give a cheesy taste) and the recipes generally don't hold up without the flavor contribution of the yeast, so if you have any sort of yeast sensitivity or candida problem this is probably not the book for you. The recipes also rely heavily on wheat gluten and are a bit lopsidedly heavy on fat and protein. All that fake meat and cheese will jam up your digestion almost as well as the real thing if you are not careful. All in all, Vegan Vittles is fun and useful, especially for party-type food, but it's not great as a primary cookbook, especially if you are using a vegan diet for any kind of therapeutic purpose. For great-tasting, more healthy and balanced vegan recipes, you might be better off with the terrific "Voluptuous Vegan", "The Complete Vegan Cookbook" or Aveline Kushi's bland but valuable "Complete Guide to Macrobiotic Cooking".
Rating: Summary: Best Cookbook ever! Review: I purchased Vegan Vittles when I was became vegan, and love it. Not only does it have great recipes, they are pretty easy to follow. Such a variety of meals, desserts, and sauces. It makes thanksgiving easy to have vegan. Some recipes can get a bit messy and involved, but the outcome is worth it. Some cookbooks are high in fat or end up bland, but not vegan vittles. A great starter cookbook or a great one to ad to your collection!
Rating: Summary: Happiness is Judi's Lemon Date Squares! Review: I truly wish I had known Jo Stepaniak, vegan writer and cook extraordinaire, twenty years ago when I took my first steps on the veggie path. My journey would certainly have been easier and tastier, as well! Vegan Vittles is but one of many wonderful cookbooks written by a jewel of the vegan community. Jo's delicious recipes make mealtimes a pleasure and do much to dispel the myth that we eat nothing but 'grass and twigs' and are a deprived lot having to suffer tasteless food. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Tempting and tasty dishes include Southern-Fried Tofu [finger-lickin' good!], Pot Roast [which smells so amazing while cooking you will be drooling in anticipation], Stuffed Shells and Macaroni & Cheeze [beloved by my children and all their friends], Caesar Salad [amazing!], and Cold Pasta & White Bean Salad [a summer staple]. Oh, and did I mention Judi's Lemon Date Squares [made too many times to count]? There are easy breakfast treats, soups for cold days, quick breads and muffins, and a terrific dessert chapter. Jo also includes recipes for easy-breezy non-dairy milks, homemade seitan, and incredible vegan cheeze. This book is a must have for new vegans, long-time vegans, vegetarians, and the vegan-curious.
