Summary: The Best Vegan Cookbook Around
Review: A great source for some basic stuff like seitan and nut milks, as well as great main meals and desserts. Unbelievable carrot cake!!!!!

Summary: Just because I'm vegan doesn't mean I'm a hippie
Review: Before I went lacto-ova 16 years ago, I enjoyed REAL food....good old American comfort food. When I tackled veganism five years ago, I went into it still liking REAL food. Once I became a vegan, however, I found that, according to most vegan cookbooks, I was suppose to evolve into an edamame loving kale eater. OK, fine....I do enjoy the more "exotic" foods, too, but I still craved my old favorites; egg salad, cream cheese, grilled cheese sandwiches, pepperoni, carrot cake, french toast, fried chicken.

Vegan Vittles, however, recognizes that just because we are vegan doesn't mean we only eat rabbit food. FINALLY, a cookbook that offers vegan alternatives to the foods we grew up with; Messy Mikes, Oven Roasted Tom Tofu, French Onion Soup, Quiche, Not Your Mama's Meatloaf,Pot Roast, Pumpkin Pie,Ceasar Salad, Ultra-Fudgey Fudge Brownies.

In my household, I cook for myself, my omni husband and my lacto-ova daughter. Before Vegan Vittles, ONE meal that we all ate and enjoyed was few and far between....most nights, I was making three completely different dinners. But since Vegan Vittles features "regular" food, my husband and daughter will happily eat MY vegan dishes, eliminating a lot of work for me...WOOHOO!!!!

I highly recommend Vegan Vittles for anyone just starting out in veganism (the recipes are simple and include common ingredients found in regular grocery stores) OR for the veteran vegan, like myself, that is looking to eat like a "regular" person again (without the cruelty, of course).

Summary: Yummy home cooking for vegans!
Review: Currently, I've prepared about 50% of the recipies in this book and I love them, particularly the Ultra-Fudgey Fudge Brownies.

Some of the recipies in this book will fool even the most picky eaters! They won't even know they are consuming vegan food. The introduction is quite thorough for such a compact summary on veganism. Many of the recipies have a "Cook's Secret" section providing hints and tips for creating an outstanding dish.

I recommend this book to vegans searching for replacements for their favorite "home cooked" meals and dishes. Also recommended for people new to veganism because many of the recipies mimic traditional favorites (i.e. french toast, grilled cheeze, quiche, etc.).

Summary: The Cook Book that Enhances Vegan Life!!
Review: For those who miss comfort food, but wanting a vegan alternative, than this book is the perfect guide for those hunger pangs. The meat alternatives especially are really delicious and guilt-free!!

Summary: More reason to GO VEGAN!
Review: Here is another book of recipes to convince people how unecessary animal products are. Joanne provides many alternatives to the comfort foods many feel they can not do without. I loved the vegan versions of cream cheese, "ribs" and eggless omelets. The vegan sour cream was the best I've come across. The recipes are very low in fat and rarely call for added oil other than the fat already in the nuts and beans. I also liked that each recipe had a nutritional analysis and a section on vegan nutrition. This book is a real benefit to people as well as to all of the animals it spares.

Summary: Vegan Vittles
Review: I absolutely love this book. It is filled with quick, easy and delicious recipes. I also found myself thoroughly engrossed in the engaging stories of the rescued animals at Farm Sanctuary. If you are a vegan or aspire to be a vegan, this book is for you!

Summary: I agree with reader below - Too much Soy!
Review: I agree with the reader below on several aspects:

First off, I respect the author and her work in the vegan arena.
Second, this book is good for recent veg*ns since it is trying to simulate "old favorites" from soy alternatives.

However, I also agree that this book has way too much soy in it. I realize that this is the way to simulate alot of meat products but it seems ironic that the point of the book, in my opinion, is on de-emphasizing using animals for meals. So why would I want to make a food item that looks like bacon? I'm not a vegetarian that really wishes he were a meat-eater, I don't want to try and simulate "that delicious meat taste and texture"!

I would highly recommend a book like "The Vegan Gourmet" or "The Voluptuous Vegan" over this book for the very reason that they vary their flavors, ingredients (more vegetables!) and ethnic sources. There are Soy products in these books but they don't form the basis of every meal!

Despite my dislike for some of the materials of this book, I DO like the spirit of the book and the idea behind it. I laud the efforts of Ms. Stepaniak and the people at Farm Sanctuary.

Summary: Most Used Book In My Collection!
Review: I am always looking for more Vegan recipes to spice up our kitchen and what a find this book is! It's easy to understand, no complicated ingredients, down-to-earth recipes that are absolutely wonderful! This is the most used cookbook in my kitchen!!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The best vegan cookbook EVER.
Review: I can't say enough about this cookbook. I love it! I use it every week. I have not made a recipe in here that didn't turn out great. It is amazingly tasty, but very healthy food. I strongly recommend this to anyone interested in healthy food-vegan or not. Chuckwagon Stew is my absolute favorite meal. An added bonus to this cookbook are the adorable pictures of rescued animals living at the Farm Sanctuary. This cookbook is a keeper.
