Rating: Summary: My Favorite Cookbook!!! Review: This cookbook is just amazing! I use it on a weekly basis and even my non-vegan stepkids have raved over most of the things I've made. I haven't loved everything, the sour creme & yes the mac & cheeze weren't my favorites, but the Cheeze Whiz I make weekly--I thin it down with soy milk. It goes into 7 layer bean dip, nachos, over brocolli, & my version of mac & cheeze. The parmesano is incredibly easy and the 3-cheeze lasagna really is cheezy. All these dishes have gotten raves at potlucks too. Joanne has definitely made it much easier to be a cheese-loving vegan!!!
Rating: Summary: Worth the price if only for Gee Wiz Spread! Review: This book contains many great recipes - including my favorite, "Gee Wiz Spread." I make Gee Wiz spread several times a month and use it on crackers, chips and salsa, as a sandwich filling (reminds me of pimento cheese), or on top of mashed potatoes and kale. It's easy to make and satisfies my cheese cravings. The book contains a good mix of simple recipes (such as Gee Wiz spread) and more complex recipes like Three Cheeze Lasagne. The Three Cheeze Lasagne is the best vegan lasagne that I have ever had and a great dish to make when you have some extra time - it is truly worth the effort. Don't expect Joanne's uncheeses to perform or taste exactly like dairy cheese. You will probably enjoy the book more if you have not had cheese in a while or if you start out with a cheezey flavored entree rather than a block of uncheese. These recipes are incredibly creative and taste great on their own.
Rating: Summary: stay away from the mac n' cheeze recipe! Review: I bought this book b/c I don't eat dairy (allergies). I have tried several recipes in the book and I have to say that there is absolutely no excuse for how awful the Macaroni and Cheeze dish is! I wish I would have heeded the other reviewer who warned about how terrible it was. Really, I had some left over lemon juice from the recipe and drank it straight just to get rid of the horrible taste in my mouth! The artichoke dip has a definite tofu flavor/aftertaste to it. The cheezecake is okay (but it's certainly no comparison to the real thing). The eggplant parmigiano is tolerable (but the cheeze sauce that goes with it is nothing like cheese). I REALLY wanted to like the recipes in this book, but since I hate cooking to begin with, I can't imagine I will give many more recipes in the book a chance - well, except maybe some of the desserts . . . If you get this book, tear out the mac and cheeze recipe and throw it away or you will want to tear your taste buds out instead!
Rating: Summary: Not for the nut allergic! Review: I bought this book because my son is allergic to milk and I wanted to make some "cheesy" dishes that our whole family could enjoy. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the dishes call for nuts (cashews or almonds). Since my son is also allergic to nuts, this ruled out most of the recipes for us. Quite a disappointment.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! A Must Read! Review: While everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, I must say that this book is fantastic! My favorite is to use use the "Hickory Bits" receipe from "Vegan Vittles" along with the "Melty Cheese Sauce" receipe from "Uncheese..." and add it with steamed veggies to a baked potato. I always loved baked a baked potato with bacon bits and cheese. Now I can enjoy that flavor once again without causing any unnecessary suffering! I also make the "Gee Wiz" sauce once per week and add it to my lunch sandwiches. Great Job Joanne!
Rating: Summary: Amazing cookbook.... Review: I will admit that the first cheeze sauce I made I was highly skeptical. I would add an ingredient and taste. I was prepared to toss out the sauce when it didn't work. I kept tasting it and thinking, "Nope, not like cheese at all." I got to the last ingredient and tasted it. WOW! It was a delicious cheeze sauce. (the velvety cheese sauce) YUM! It is my favorite thing to eat, especially if I don't feel good. I slather it over brocolli and cauliflower. The cheezecake recipes in here kick major butt. Everyone at my office goes nuts for the pumpkin cheezecake.
Rating: Summary: Culinary abomination Review: First, I would just like everyone to know that there is a lot of really great vegan food out there. None of it, however, is contained in this book. After trying a few recipes and reading the others, I was forced to hide this book to keep it from being inflicted upon me. I presume that the author hasn't had cheese in so long that she has forgotten what it tasted like. If you get this book anyway, don't try the macaroni and cheese. Just don't.
Rating: Summary: WARNING to VEGANS Review: Just a warning to all concerned Vegans. 'Veggie Shreds', as well as some other 'Vegetarian' cheeses, still contain CASEIN!!! I was very disturbed to find that I had paid twice the price of regualar cheese, and still had not avoided supporting animal usage! I complained to the grocery store, because the items are included in the vegetarian section, and the comapnies themselves advertise the items as VEGETARIAN! So, buyer beware. Look for CASEIN ( a milk derivitive), and ask your grocer to remove the items and replace with TOFUTTI brand cheese. It is delicious, and is so close to the flavor of regular cheese, and, NO Casein! I have tried the Mozzarella and American flavors. Best Wishes to all!
Rating: Summary: Good for Vegans and Omnis alike! Review: This book is amazing! Whether you are vegan or just wanting to cut down your fat intake but still enjoy cheesy delights, this book is definitely the answer. I was a vegetarian a long time before becoming vegan. Mostly because I loved cheese. This cookbook allows both my husband and I to enjoy comfort foods like Macaroni and Chreeze and Eggplant parmiagno without animal products. Even a four year old macaroni and cheese expert can't tell the difference! Definite buy for any Vegan or anyone who is trying to live a healthier lifestyle. We have purchased this book for many nonvegan who are just trying to watch their weight. They are always pleasantly surprised!
Rating: Summary: sorry folks Review: i have tried several recipes in here, as i have been a vegan for years and really miss cheese. i know it is hard to replicate cheese without the casein (milk protein) and that is why the vegan cheeses on the market are so bad. now i remember why i have avoided this cookbook for years and it has sat on the shelf. not only do the recipes not taste like cheese, but my hubby who does eat cheese wanted to [puke] after trying the last recipe. most the others we have tried were so-so. the textures were weird, and the combos of tahini, nutritional yeast, etc. used throughout were just odd. she definitely gets credit for trying so hard to come up with all the different recipes! an "a" for effort, but i'll stick with neither cheese nor uncheese for now.
