Rating: Summary: Use Tofu in Familiar Recipes Review: I have been using this cookbook for over 5 years. It's great! Most of the recipes are easy. The nice thing about it is that it incorporates tofu into receipes that are familiarto you and your family: soups, crepes, smoothies, main dishes, cheesecake, puddings, etc. You don't have to buy odd ingredients that you would need to prepare tofu in a Japanese or Chinese style. It stimulated me to think of my own ways to add tofu and soy products to my diet. And the estrogenic ingredients really worked to get rid of my hot flashes.
My only problem with it is the flax seed deserts. Some of them haven't turned our at all.
Rating: Summary: Well.... Review: I have had my nose in cookbooks for over 20 years, and this is by far the best. Why? Because its recipes are simple, simple, simple, and geared to those of us who won't spend hours in the kitchen, no matter how many hot flashes we have. The shakes made from tofu and soy milk are fabulous, as are the granola recipes. She's a little heavy handed with her spices, so just exercise caution. BUY THIS BOOK, no matter what your age or sex, if you are interested in quick, healthy, and tasty eating. And she also has a great attitude!

Rating: Summary: FOR EDITH DesMarais AND Anyone else wishing to read this Review: I read your review with interest. I had not tried the recipes in the book. I wanted to. What REALLY turned me off was that EVERYTHING is loaded with sugar and sweeteners. ANYTHING will be palatable if you sweeten it. The recipes are just so bad with all the added sweeteners. At one point the author mentions her husband and daughter love the stuff she made. No wonder. It's like candy! I can't believe the author actually eats like this. Forget menopause. What about the damage from all that sugar?

Rating: Summary: A nicely researched diet that WORKS!! TRY IT !! Review: I was at a loss to find a "natural" solution to my menopause problems. Hot flashes signaled that my body was indeed changing. Howevever,I have been involved with the medical profession long enough to know that I was not a "believer" in the current trend of estorgen supplements... I do not have cancer in my family, and didn't want to be the first! When I stumbled upon this well written and well documeted treasure, I decided to try the diet. I experienced relief within one week. What more can I say? I must stick with it though, or as the author notes, the symptoms re-appear. I am not a strict vegetatian, but do like tofu, so that was not a problem. My husband loves tofu and veggies and can tolerate the flaxseed quite well. I, on the other hand, had to devise my own ways of incorporating the soy into my diet. I like the packaged soy milk that is flavored. 2 glasses a day ( 8 oz.) keeps the hot-flashes away!!! Also, I found that Eden and Wastbrae sell Black Soy Beans. With some seasoning added, it tastes wonderful - can't tell the difference from regular black beans. I don' know if it has the same properties as the yellow ones, but the label advertising says they are much less in fat and easier to digest. I agree!! Why more women don't know about this natural way of dealing with menopause, I don't know... I hope it gets more advertising!! GREAT JOB!!
Rating: Summary: Warning regarding over dose of flax seed Review: I was very enthusiastic regarding this book. The recipes were very well done and I did find great relief from menopausal symptoms. However, while traveling I relied on several "portable" flax seed foods for my daily "portions" for estrogen. Shortly thereafter, I was found to have a very irregular heart beat. I have no history of heart problems and, in fact, am an athlete. Research into flax seed showed that more than 2 ounces or 60 grams a day should not be taken internally. It can cause increased respitory rate, gasping, staggering, or convulsions. In early history, it was used as a heart medication - indicating a heart link. There is no warning in the book and in fact, the book encourages higher doses. Please use extreme caution in using these flax seed foods. Use only small amounts per day. There are beneficial amounts (very low doses), but it is toxic in small amounts as well if consumed regularly. There are no warnings on the flax seed bags in stores.

Rating: Summary: A must read for any woman over 40 Review: I've always considered myself a respectable researcher when it comes to responsibility for my own health, but Shandler leaves me in the dust. Bless her for it, too! She's written a personable, very readable, and invaluable book. She's outlined the research and given us the benefit of her hundreds (or more?)of hours spent on the task. Then she's created amazingly fast, easy, and nutritionally sound recipes that are truly yummy. She's even been thoughtful for the whole family: the main dishes aren't estrogen power houses (No, your husband's voice will not be falsetto -- but he will have very necessary nutritional prostate protection) but there are plenty of easy and delicious snack and breakfast food for the sexy crones in the family. Do yourself a favor and add this keeper to your shelf ASAP. Thank you, Nina, for a job well done just when I desperately needed it.
