Rating: Summary: Fun, simple ways to survive if you aren't a chef! Review: I love this book! Many of the recipes are for plain/simple foods, which is perfect for me. I really like that this ring-bound book lies flat or props easily in a bookrest for easy reading/access.There are some fancier dishes but there's equal time given to basics - how to boil eggs, time pasta, etc. This would be a great gift for someone who doesn't really like to cook but finds themselves having to more than they might think.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: I orginally learned about this book from College 101: The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read, as it was recommended by the author, Guy Stevens. I purchased Kathryn's book and gave it my stamp of approval. Originally I was going to give the book to my grandson as part of his graduation gift. Instead I kept the book for myself and have used some of the recipes. My grandchildren adore the recipe for Bacon & Cheese Waffles! (page 77) Oh and the Gingerbread Waffles are delicious!
Rating: Summary: Good beginner's book Review: I picked this up at a used bookstore and love it, though I wish I had the ring-bound version instead. It's great for beginners and although I'm far from a beginner now, i still find myself consulting it because it's a quick easy reference for a recipe template that I can play around with later (for example, quiche, muffins, baked chicken, etc.). It's not as bulky as my beloved "Betty Crocker" but it still has a pretty decent variety of recipes. I give it only 4 stars for three reasons. 1) The non-ring bound version doesn't hold up (or stay open) well. 2) There are no pictures or charts 3) Sometimes info is difficult to find on basic cooking times. Otherwise this is a great book and highly recommended. Oh and as for the guy/gal reviewer who criticized it for being sexist, grow up. It's a catchy title, and the author is only playing to her audience. At least she is wise enough to realize that women DO need to deal with finances. (Years ago many women were left in the dark about such things-- my grandmother couldn't even write a check!). I applaud Ms. Frandsen for including a little bit of everything. Besides, you'll note that the presumed readers of the book are BOTH male and female-- we ALL need to know how to cook (and repair things) these days!
Rating: Summary: This book helped me through the early years of adulthood! Review: I received this book as a graduation gift. I moved to another country and couldn't afford to call home everytime I had a question. This book became my homemaking "bible." I still use it regularly after 14 years of being on my own. I can testify the hardback is worth the investment. I, too, use this as my gift of choice for graduates and newlyweds!!
Rating: Summary: A 'Must' for college students! Review: I sent a copy with my oldest daughter as she went off to college, adding my own favorite family recipes. She's graduated now and STILL uses it. My other 3 children made sure I gave them a copy as they left for school!
Rating: Summary: an invaluable companion for a growing individual Review: I was given this book as a graduation gift from my parents, ten years on I still find this book incredibly useful. I would recommend it to anyone who is becoming increasingly independant but still feels the need to call their mom at strange hours in the morning. A real must!
Rating: Summary: More than cooking! Review: My mother bought this book for me, probably after answering so many stupid questions! I have referred to it dozens of times since then. There are many "real-life" recipes that don't require a degree from cooking school. It also has many empty pages at the end of each section to record your own notes or recipes. More than cooking, this book lists stain removers, household cleaning tips, conversion tables, substitution suggestions, and many other "homemaking" ideas. I would buy this book for everyone striking out on their own!
Rating: Summary: A great "basic" - - - even for the experienced! Review: Nutrition, shopping, recipes, laundry and health hints and how-to suggestions - it's all here. Although my views differ a little here and there, this is a great little helper for anyone.
Rating: Summary: Very simple and helpful Review: The book speaks for itself. I have learned so much from this book. Everything is very simple and informative. Once again, the book speaks for itself, so I'll let it do just that. Just buy it!
Rating: Summary: Life Saving Book with the WRONG TITLE Review: The worst thing I can say about this book is the title. They completely missed their market when they titled this book "Where's Mom when I need her". While marketing to a college student may seem smart it is only a small piece of the market this book should have targeted. In reality this book is the most aptly targeted to the stay at home mom who is trying to live frugally and save money. Many moms out there are buying books such as "Miserly Meals" and "Tightwad Gazette" in an attempt to find ways to save money and make simple meals for their family. Also many of us did not grow up learning to bake from scratch and how to make our own mixes for things. This book is actually the best one out there for that purpose. It should have had the word Frugal in the title or Cheap/Inexpensive and it should have been marketed more for the moms than the kids. I bought this book years ago as a young mom because my mother never taught me these things. We never learned how to cook or bake or any of those things. This is absolutely hands down the only book you will ever need for saving money and learning the basics of baking, cooking. Excellent book. Editors totally dropped the ball on who to market to and probably lost the author untold dollars as a result but nevertheless the book is amazing!!!
