Summary: Unreserved recommendation from a reluctant cook
Review: If you've ever wondered how to turn grains like millet into delicious dishes, this is the book for you! Healthy, vegetarian whole food which is easy to cook and tastes delicious. As a newly married vegetarian I was nervous about cooking for my non-veggie husband, and browsed endless books looking for one which seemed to have simple yet interesting recipes, and which explained what to DO with quinoa, tempeh, and other healthy but strange ingredients. This was the best of my many buys, and one of the few books I still use every week.

Summary: this is a wonderful cookbook.
Review: it took a while, but after purchasing this book, i finally purchased a pressure cooker, and, can i tell you, what a valuble purchase it was! the recipes in this book are easy, healthful, and most amazingly fast. i have made soups that retain amazing flavor and nutitional value and cook in under 10 minutes. of course, you will have to buy a pressure cooker, but it is worth it!

Summary: the best
Review: My parents bought me this book when I first made the transition from meat-eater to veganism. It's frustrating to look through "healthy" vegetarian cookbooks and find recipes with a generous handful of cheese, a couple cups of buttermilk, and a couple of eggs. No wonder non-vegetarians like these books... they're barely different from what they're eating now, nutritionally speaking. But Lorna Sass has written one in a million. It's healthy and so good! And it's got everything. Wonderful soups, all the basics- like hummus, and fantasitc whole grain desserts. Whenever we need a good recipe for a special occasion or want something that we don't take the time for everyday- we consult this book. In addition, it provides great information on all the ingredients. While most of the recipes require too much effort for everyday cooking, it's definitely a book that belongs in everyone's cookbook collection... vegetarian or not. And believe me- it's been approved by all the picky meat-eaters in my family!

Summary: Zero Stars Cookbook without Pictures
Review: One expects pictures in a cook book especially if you are looking to learn something new. It's hard know if it is not something you would like to prepare without a presentation. If you are very experienced at cooking great it has lots of pages of text, but I found it useless in helping me with vegetarian cooking. Sorry if it sounds so trivial, but a cookbook with out pictures is no darn good to me. If you disagree, good luck it has lots of pages for you.

Summary: This is my favorite cookbook.
Review: This book turned me on to pressure cookers and it has very useful charts for pressure cooking everything, I turn to these charts all the time. There are great recipes, some are simple and some are very complex, and the author sets the groundwork for you to be able to improvise great dishes of your own with whatever you have on hand. I found that after using the book for a while, I just use the recipes as a rough guide, which is what I think the author intended. The book is worth the price for the pressure cooking charts and the ingredients guide alone! I only wish I knew earlier that this is the same book previously published as "Recipes from an Ecological Kitchen"! I had checked it out from the library under that title, fell in love, and found out it is out of print. Amazon.com took six months to find a copy for me for $50.00. If only I had known it was available in paperback for $14.95 under a different title! Still, it was worth it.

Summary: One of the best cookbooks around
Review: Vegetarianism is "in." Everyone has written a cookbook of new recipes or adapted American favorites in an attempt to ride this wave. There are, however, some writers and lovers of food who merely write what they know and eventually the world catches up to them. Lorna Sass is one such writer, and THE COPLETE VEGETARIAN KITCHEN is one such book. I have spent a number of years searching for gourmet vegetarian/vegan cookbooks that embrace the fact that food (i.e., vegetables) have flavor and pizazz. They don't need to be smothered in cream sauces to be eaten, nor do they need to be steamed to "dente" to be healthy. Each of Lorna Sass' recipes liberates the vegetable from this inglorious past without effort. Her recipes never fail, and are easily adaptable for those of us with food allergies. She even explains how to make substitutions. There is also a glossary that defines each grain, vegetable, and seed used in her book. Throughout the book there are hints for storing food, nutritional facts, and information that helps make the transition from vegetarianism to veganism simple. For me, however, the true test is the dessert section. I turn to this section first and look at the ingredients, the mixing of flavors, and for originality. Each of her desserts is a winner! What's even more amazing. ..they never have that health-food-store taste. I can bake a cake without eggs, an old-fashioned pudding without sugar (and eggs) and satisfy everyone in my house. Oh, this is the best cookbook to have on hand, if only for the sugar-free/egg-free/milk-free desserts. Buy it, I know that you'll like it.
