Rating: Summary: Not Just for Vegans! Review: It is almost unfortunate that this book has the title it does, because it clearly presents such a wealth of information on nutrition that anyone - including meat eaters - who are interested in a healthy diet will find lots of information here to help them. There is no missionary style here to convert anyone to a meatless diet - just very well presented facts from people who know what they're talking about.
Rating: Summary: Helped Me Make The Best Decision Of My Life Review: The best decision of my life was becoming a Vegan. I recoil at how I used to mindlessly chomp hamburgers, and although I'm an atheist, I can relate to St. Paul's road to Damascus experience. Not only was I damaging my health, I was unwittingly serving a very cruel factory farm industry. Not to sound hackneyed, but if I can make the change to veganism, ANYONE can.
Becoming Vegan is full of practical advice on consuming the right amounts of food, the right food, and the right nutritional habits. Unlike a lot of books on Veganism, it doesn't, to its credit, try hard to be fashionable, nor does it soft peddle the potential problems that Vegans may face in vitamin deficiencies.
Whether you're young, old, athletic, sedentary, or have special needs, the book will almost certainly be useful in your transition to veganism. I sincerely hope that you'll check it out.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book, I can't disagree Review: The strength of this book, in short, is that it provides practical advise to existing vegans on how to become a better vegan. Or for those who are considering making the change, like myself, what do we need to account for or look out for. Veganism like any dietary choice, is frought with opportunities and pitfalls. Corn chips roasted in palm oil served with a vege burger and white flour bun could be vegan but terribly unhealthy. So, if you want healthy vegan vs. unhealthy vegan, this book is for you. What hasn't been resolved yet are the ethical issues surrounding seafood consumption. Why should I treat a shrimp or clam the same as I do a dog or rabbit when their nervous systems are completely different. Before you answer, remember that plants may have sensory apparatus as well. Where do you draw the line?
Rating: Summary: Thorough Book on Vegan Nutrition Review: This book is an excellent resource for vegans and vegetarians alike. It details all the essential nutrients, what foods contain them, and how to supplement your diet properly to ensure the proper intake of the daily requirements. The nutritional information provided is invaluable. This is a really interesting book about how eating affects our health. There is a lot of useful information in here to provide much thought about what to eat. There are also interesting references for wellness products. The author does suggest you go off coffee slowly before you start the plan. This would minimize headaches during detox. I couldn't wait to get started so, of course, did it all at once and had the most horrible awful headache for 4 straight days. I finally broke down and had a 1/2 cup coffee one day instead of taking aspirin and that did the trick...for the moment. Now I'm completely caffeine-free and don't miss it at all. My doctor prescribed a wonderful replacement for coffee made from soya beans called "soyffee". I bought it online at www. S o y c o f f e e.com and cannot believe how good is the taste. This book is a must have for all vegans!
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: This book is great because it acknowledges that there can be disadvantages to a vegan diet. So many books preach veganism as the end all be all of diets and skim over serious issues such as nutritional deficiencies. The authors explain that a vegan diet can be an extremely healthy way of eating IF properly planned. Everything is supported with scientific evidence. For anyone interested in adopting a vegan diet this book will show you how to safely make the change.
Rating: Summary: fantastic for the vegan athlete Review: This book is great for anyone considering veganism but especially if you are (or want to become) a vegan athlete. (I do triathlons)There is a chapter that goes over special considerations for vegan athletes and also gives a great overview of sports nutrition in general. I was a little nervous giving up all animal products thinking there would be some nutritional nook or cranny I would miss that would make me colapse during a long run. This book told me everything I needed to put me at ease and even improve my performance.
Rating: Summary: You need this book Review: This book's balanced and rational approach to creating a sound Vegan lifestyle proved invaluable to me as I became a Vegan. Unlike some Vegan books, this book was not written by fanatics and doesn't preach. The authors are medical professionals and this volume presents a sound view of the pluses and minuses of Vegan/Vegitarian ways of eating. It helped me create a diet that not only meets all my nutritional needs, but one that is easy and fun. If you are a new Vegan, considering becoming one, or are looking for ways in increase the non-animal-source areas of your diet then you need this book.
Rating: Summary: Easy to reads and packed with info! Review: This is such a great resource book for anyone concerned about the health consequences of following a vegan diet. We hear and read so much misleading information from the meat and dairy industries about what foods are necessary in our diet, that after a while we start believing it is fact. This book is filled with well researched and factual informaion. This is a valuable reference book which answers all the questions I had (and some I hadn't thought of) about eating in a far healthier manner than in the past.
Rating: Summary: Buy this! Review: This is the sort of book that you hear about, decide maybe you'd be interested in, check it out from the library, read it again and again, then BUY it still! It is a perfect education in the history of veganism, the health benefits of avoiding ALL animal products in our diet, and resources to help us with the transition. There are chapters on pregnancy, childhood, the senior years, athletes, travelling...all you need to know through all aspects of your life. Numerous studies are cited throughout to back up all information. A perfect book to share with someone you care about!
Rating: Summary: The Textbook For Veganism 101 Review: This text is one of the best for anyone considering Veganism, especially when it comes to concerns of proper nutrition. Like any scholary work, one will need to revisit and continue to learn from the work, but overall, it's worth the purchase.
This book talks to those who may choose Veganism for health issues, as well; and not simply to those of us who do it in the name of animal or environmental preservation.
