Rating: Summary: Frantic Family Cookbook - Not for the Frantic! Review: I guess I am the only person who finds this cookbook horrible. I ordered this book as a result of reading the reviews and the word "Frantic" in the title. I assumed that the meals would be quick, easy, and tasty, but I was wrong on all 3 counts.
I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 star because I've only made 3 of the recipes and assume that the rest are just as disappointing. A quick rundown of the recipes:
1)Cheap-o Cassoulet - Took a while to make as I had to thinly slice 4 carrots & 4 leeks, chop 2 onions, & 4 slices of bacon, press 4 garlic cloves, in addition to the 11 other ingredients. Result was bland and watery - my boyfriend preferred pasta and butter.
2) Make Ahead Cheese & Hamburger Casserole: Took about 45 minutes to make and then had to be refrigerated for 1 day. The result was an average tasting hamburger helper. The real Hamburger Helper can be made in about 7 minutes and with ground turkey. The result would be quicker, tastier, and healthier. This dish has 20G of fat!!!
3)I'll spare you from the bland "Autumn Chix Breasts" which took at least 40 minutes to prepare with a bland result. I recommend any "shake and bake" coating or a home-made similar one. Try one of the Loony Spoons or Crazy Plates cookbooks instead. It will save your $ and time!!
Rating: Summary: Frantic, that's me! Review: I saw the title of this cookbook and knew it was for me. I am very happy I picked it up and started to use it. I love the tips she gives as well as the great meals. I don't think I'm Frantic anymore!
Rating: Summary: This book is hilarious--and the recipes aren't bad either! Review: If you loved Healthy Foods, you'll love this one just as much! The recipes are terrific and the whole book is a fun read.
Rating: Summary: Finally a cookbook with good and easy recipes!!! Review: Normally I do not bother to buy cookbooks because it seems that I'll spend $20 on a cookbook only to find that there are only 2-3 recipes in there that I would actually take the time to make and that my kids would eat. This is not the case with this cookbook however. I went through and was able to dog ear about 20-25 recipes that I have the time to make and that my kids and picky husband will eat. I haven't tried anything yet, but I have three I am trying out this week. I am so happy to finally have a realistic cookbook for those of us who aren't home baking pies all day!
Rating: Summary: don't judge a book by it's cover Review: The book should've been a nicer quality book, printing-wise! Ely's Healthy Meals was a better-looking book but with lots of misprints (first copy sent to me had several pages repeated and several pages missing!) and this book looks like it was produced with an old laser jet printer and an old xerox machine. I don't know about Champion Press... Too bad--sometimes you just expect more book appeal. The recipes look good though and fairly easy and quick to make. Lots of excerpts from Healthy Meals which seems like A LOT-- what if you already have that book?! Would've been nicer to have all new info or same info but improved in this book instead of just reprinting it. Which brings me to "most of my dessert recipes call for sucanat"--a reprint from from Healthy Meals but not the case in this book's dessert recipes as you will see! I guess all in all, if you are the natural foods crowd that liked Healthy Meals, this is a good humble companion book with a title that fits...
Rating: Summary: Home cooked meals for the time stressed family Review: The days of the stay-at-home mother who has nothing to do but wait around for the kids to come home from school and her husband to come home from work are long gone (if they ever really existed to begin with). These days most mothers are juggling the kids, at least a part-time job, after school activities, and most of the domestic chores. So, how does she provide for dinner without resorting to the local fast food drive through each evening? The answer to that question is in this cookbook. The recipes are delicious and you would never know that the cook didn't spend hours in the kitchen preparing it. I say "the cook" because the recipes are easy enough that even I can prepare them. This makes it perfect not only for the frantic mom preparing dinner but also the frantic college student, or anyone else with a desire for a good meal but a shortage of time to prepare one. Some of my favorites include Fragrant Lemon Chicken and Potatoes, Chicken Stir Fry, Caribbean Chicken (for those who like spicy foods), Calypso Red Beans and Rice, Double Baked Cheddar Cheese Torpedoes, and Double-Chocolate Bread Pudding. One of the things I have to comment on with this book is that it is in ring-bound form, which allows it to lie flat while you use it for cooking. While Champion Press, Ltd. has a wide variety of specialty cookbooks most of them are not spiral or ring bound or anything similar and so are tough to keep open when preparing the food. This one is an exception and is a highly recommended cookbook.
Rating: Summary: Enhanced with cogent and extensive advice Review: The Frantic Family Cookbook was compiled by food columnist Leanne Ely to specifically meet the needs of over worked and time-limited family cooks. From Fragrant Lemon Chicken and Potatoes; Clean Out The Crisper Vegetable Soup; and Spanakopita Quiche; to Whole Wheat Sweet Scones; Spice 'Em Up Hash Browns; and Breakfast Puffs, The Frantic Family Cookbook is an ideal cookbook reference which is enhanced with cogent and extensive advice on feeding a frantic family nutritiously and inexpensively.
Rating: Summary: Recipes even your kids will love! Review: This book is chockfull of recipes that are quick and easy to make - plus even my picky 10 year old will eat them. The only reason I didn;t give it 5 stars is that I think it could have been printed a little nicer. The ink ran a little when I got one of the pages wet. So just be careful about those splats. Otherwise this is a great cookbook to add to your family's collection.
Rating: Summary: More great recipes from Leanne Review: This includes more destined-to-become-favorites recipes... Simple ingredients, no long prep and cooking times...doesn't get any better than this!
Rating: Summary: Delicious Homestyle Meals Review: Wonderful! I make several dishes from this book every week. My whole family (3 teenagers included!) have loved each one. A delicious way to fix a large variety of healthy meals. Food tastes so good you would never know it was low fat! Nutritional analaysis of each recipe makes it easy to figure points on Weight Watchers program.
I received this book for my birthday along with this amazing new beverage as an alternative to coffee. Made from 100% soy that's organic, its absolutely delicious! It's caffeine-free and comes in 8 delicious flavors. Just google it under "s oyfee" to find it and you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend this book...
