Rating: Summary: How US Corporations Are putting Death in Our Plates! Review: The greatnest of this book is its scholarly content at a layman level. This book should be in every center of learning and public library around the globe. The strenght of the book is the cogency of the material presented to show how US Corporations are concerned by profit and not the public health. The clergy should advertise it. John Robbins'book will be a classic in years to come. A copy should be given to every single member of congress as well as to the president.
Rating: Summary: A must read if you love life Review: An important, compelling book that everyone should read. People need to be aware of many issues that much of the food industry understandably wants to cover up through clever marketing. Without knowledge we can't be expected to make informed choices. Those who are negative towards books like Mr. Robbins are either afraid of this information due to a personal vested interest in profit through deceit, or they would prefer to remain ignorant and eat themselves to an early grave than be forced to examine their daily habits. There are also important social and ethical issues brought forth in this book. Everyone has the right to make their own choices concerning food, however I strongly believe in giving people the whole story. If you can't stomach the truth about how your food is made and prepared, then should you really be eating it?
Rating: Summary: Making An Educated Decision Review: For those who question whether or not a vegetarian lifestyle is for them, this is an excellent book. The author very methodically and with documentation, is able to present the whole picture regarding food. It isn't a pretty picture. But I think that a book which gives you as much information as possible, while being very readable. If you as a consumer are under the impression that the meat industry is well-regulated and concerned about the quality of their product, think again. The answer to disease and the high cost of health care in this country is the people making sound nutritional decisions. This book is invaluable.
Rating: Summary: Compelling----a must-read!! Review: I read John Robbin's "Diet for a New America" six years and went vegetarian. My eyes were open, thanks to that experience...now, all these years later, John Robbins has done it again!!!...The Food Revolution is a must-read for every human being...especially during these violent times, spreading the word of compassion is our only hope for the future...buy a copy for you and anyone you care about...the truth is here.
Rating: Summary: What a wonderful and incredibly helpful book Review: I bought The Food Revolution nearly two months ago, and found it to be so enthralling that I read it in a weekend. I just loved it. This is a book that is full of helpful information that is presented in a way that is incredibly friendly and useful. John Robbins is one of the most loving, wise, and clear-thinking people I have ever encountered. I originally got the book because a friend had told me it was the best book she had ever read. That was a pretty strong recommendation, and I thought she must be exaggerating, but after reading it, I would agree with her. I was about twenty pounds overweight, and had painful joints, and trouble sleeping, plus a bunch of other aches and pains. I had known I should eat more healthfully, but somehow I just lacked the willpower or the discipline or something to follow through. Well, after reading The Food Revolution, I felt all fired up to DO something, for myself and for our world, and for the first time I actually began to take responsibility for what I chose to put in my mouth. This is one motivating book. That was two month ago. It's been two months that I've been on this way of eating and here are the results. I have lost all of the 20 pounds that I wanted to lose and have more energy than I've had since I was a teenager. My sleep has greatly improved. I don't need to take any pills to fall asleep and I wake up totally refreshed. The inflammation in my joints has completely disappeared. My outlook in life has turned around. Four different people have been so impressed by the changes in my attitude that they have asked me if I have fallen in love! In a way, I have. With life. The most amazing part of it all, to me, is that I actually wake up in the morning feel great, and looking forward to the day. I will be forever thankful to John Robbins and The Food Revolution. This book truly changed my life for the better. If you care about yourself, this is a book you should buy, read, and heed. I plan to give copies to all my friends and family for the holidays.
Rating: Summary: The poster child of the malnourished Review: Robbin's assertions have been long demolished by serious scientists, yet his tone of utter righteousness seems to offset that. His draconian recomendations are particularly dangerous for children. American needs a more balanced view of nutrition, such as the ADA's food pyramid.
Rating: Summary: It should be titled "Truth Revolution." Review: One of the luckiest days of my life was when I happened to surf my way onto this page and order this book. I have to admit I was more than slightly cynical when I read some of the rave reviews posted, but nonetheless I decided to make the judgment for myself. And in the process of reading this incredibly well researched and documented "truth revolution," I found myself utterly flabbergasted with the turn of each page. As a person who has always been literally brought up in food (my father works for a meat company owned by ConAgra), I considered myself an above-average informed food consumer. Plus, I have always had an innate fascination with food, and have spent many years studying and learning about nutrition. I thought I'd read it all...I truly believed this book would offer me no new material, but would have perhaps some kind of interesting perspective. I was worried that it would be some rantings and preaching from Mr. John Robbins, but I couldn't have been MORE WRONG! The TRUTH HURTS, and this book is a truth revolution. This book contains the results of hundreds of scientific studies and findings mixed with the creative/clever, thought-provoking and meaningful voice of Mr. Robbins and his own fascinating personal anecdotes. I think there should be a guarantee on this book that if you don't learn at least 50 new things you get your money back. And 50 is nowhere near the amount that I learned. This book did change my life...it's funny I just never expected that! Only Ayn Rand has had this kind of affect on me and she writes FICTION! Do yourself a huge favor: buy this book. I promise you won't ever regret this one (nor will you lend it to people for fear of not getting it back; you'll just buy it for them as gifts--as I plan to do for all my friends and family). I would personally like to say to John: Thank You for opening my eyes and for changing my life. I am proud to say that today I finished your book, and today I vow to change my eating habits for the rest of my life. I had been sitting on the fence for a while, but I've decided to become a vegan (do you think you could come over to my parents house when I announce it to my dad? <wink> Don't worry I plan on getting him a copy of this book.) If you could help convert me, a Texan from a meat loving (and selling) family you could convince anyone! Add another one to the scoreboard....we'll get there someday!
Rating: Summary: be afraid, be very afraid! Review: This book is must-read and a real eye-opener! It is incredibly well researched and raises many questions that big companies do not want you to ask regarding health, animal treatment and the consequences to the environment. I was recently made aware of the pollution and ill-treatment to animals caused by large pig factories in Quebec after seeing a documentary called "bacon: the movie," but did not realize the extent of the situation. I would recommend this book to anyone who remotely cares what they put in their mouth and the consequences that it has. Hats off to Mr. Robbins!
Rating: Summary: urgent reading Review: The most important book you have ever read. Please read this book , the world is counting on it. The most clearly explained and thoroughly researched book to date on what the impact to our health, our planet, the animals and our future generations our food choices have. This book will change your life forever whether you want it to or not. If you no longer wish to live with your head in the sand and truely want to know the truth, this book is for you. You cannot delay reading this book if you have children or are under 40 years of age. I am not being overdramatic. This book seems like a scarey futuristic science fiction book, unfortunately it is about the united states in 2001. After you read it, tell everyone you know.
Rating: Summary: BUY THIS BOOK AND SAVE THE PLANET! Review: It's true! I recently read that 75% of Americans consider themselve to be an ENVIRONMENTALIST....well, this book tells you why you CANNOT be an environmentalist AND eat meat! Chapters include health information on Preventing Cancer, A Healthy Plant-Based Diet and the environmental/animal rights aspects of a vegan/vegetarian diet, The Pig Farmer, Misery on the Menu...You will learn why a meat based diet is so hard on the planet, hard on the animals and hard on YOU! Each chapter has WHAT WE KNOW sections which highlight the facts about disease prevention and the plant based diet, the amounts of water, land used to provide a plant based diet vs. that of a meat based diet. Also look for the IS THAT SO? sections which list quotes from the meat and dairy industry and the arguments that show these quotes to be FALSE based on medical research! John Robbins is a wonderfully moving and inspiring writer...and to think he came from the Baskin-Robbins ice cream family!! GO VEGAN!!
