Summary: Not even fish or chicken??????
Review: This is a vegetarian diet, pure and simple. And that's fine, if you want to become a vegetarian. However, the title of the book, I feel, is purposely deceiving.

Had the book been named "Eat Vegetarian - Weigh less," how many copies do you think it would have sold?

My guess? Not as many.

Summary: It works!
Review: This is a wonderful book. Clear, informative, extremely helpful. It makes it clear that there are really only two ways to lose weight: eat fewer calories and burn more calories. You can eat fewer calories by eating less food, which works for any diet in the short run but not in the long run becaus (surprise!) you feel hungry and deprived. But by eating foods that are less dense in calories-- i.e., less fat-- you can eat the same amount of food and still eat a lot fewer calories, so you can maintain this way of eating.

A lot of people think that the only diet Dr. Ornish recommends is the same one he proved could reverse heart disease, but in this book he offers a spectrum of choices. In other words, to the degree you move in the low fat (and low sugar) direction, then you lose weight without being hungry. And your health gets better in other ways, too.

And most of the recipes are great, too.

Summary: Talk Show Hosts Love This Book!
Review: This is an initial read for recent heart attack victims! The authors theory of heart disease reversal through a vegetarian diet and exercise program seems quite plausible. In order to embark and be successful on this diet, a high degree of motivation and radical lifestyle change is required. Your first heart attack will provide the motivation!

The author does list numerous chefs and others as contributors to heart smart recipes which in essence tells me that 260 pages out of a total of 366 belongs in a cooking book. In this 1993 copyright and reprinted in paperback in 1997, the essence of the work can be found on pages 32-33. ...Quoting Ornish, "Here's all you really have to know." pages 32-33. Too simple for my tastes!

The publisher/editor need to revisit typesetting school. I found myself constantly squinting to figure out the extremely small print. Consideration of the reader was not apparent as evidenced by small print, poor page layout, weak choice of fonts and too many recipes!

Summary: Beans and Carrots and Tofu, Oh My!
Review: When I first picked up this book I was thrilled. I didn't want a book on some fad diet, but rather one that would help me eat better as I lost a few pounds. Unfortunately, this book represents the extreme opposite of the over-portioned, transfatty'd, fast food causing people so many problems with their health. Hasn't the author heard of moderation? Be warned, the recipes and philosophy of this book is really counter to the eating habits of most people - and you can pretty much give up ever eating out again, most restaurants don't serve the requirements of this plan. I lasted only a few weeks, then I was done with the bland sameness of it all, relenting to a friend's insistence that I try Atkins - success at last!

Summary: SOUND ADVICE - TIME CONSUMING RECIPES
Review: While I enjoyed Ornish's other books, this one did not rank as high in my estimation. There are some very positive points which stress the importance of eating healthy, exercising and managing stress. However, the recipes, while passable as far as the taste buds were concerned, had a host of ingredients and were time consuming to prepare. Now, if you have the time, that may not be a problem. However, for anyone who works a twelve-hour day, in the home or out, the food preparation time my be just a little too much and that pizza outlet on the corner may begin to look a little too tempting!

While the book does have its merit for the advice on nutrition, exercise and stress management, there was nothing said here that we have not heard endless times in other similar books. If you have the time to prepare the recipes, you will likely enjoy the book, otherwise, this one may not be for you.
