Rating: Summary: IT WORKS!! Review: Not having worn blue jeans in 8 years, I tried a pair on and they wouldn't fit, the pair being an woman's size 20 stretch jeans. Instead of jeans, I bought the book. Four weeks later, I got the blue jeans, only this time it was a Size 14 petite, regular denim pair! Four months later, I have now successfully made it through Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, 2 vacations, a multitude of parties and feel like I'm still going strong. Oh, and my blood pressure has dropped from 175/90 to 118/74, without medication! It works!!
Rating: Summary: It makes sense - darn it! Review: Sugar, the darn stuff is everywhere. After reading this I hopped down to the supermarket to do my shopping and sugar is everywhere - in everything. Sure I thought Jam, other highly processed foods like cereals and so on would have it. But its in just about everything - from tins of plain tomatoes and kidney beans to bread. Cutting sugar from your diet can seem quite daunting at first. I mean - you feel like you are going to have to refuse everything because just about everything you buy for snack food or take away food seems to be forbidden. And then there was the terrible thought that I would miss things like chocolate too much. So I thought I would give the programme two months trial to see how I felt and I have to say two things - 1 - it works 2 - after a few days adjustment it is easy to follow. I don't crave for sweet things, feel hungry all the time, or be left feeling precious about making food choices. Moving from the testimonial into more review mode now - to summarise the technical explanations in the book - you get tired, hungry and irritable because sugar and highly processed carbohydrates raise your blood sugar and you get lots of sugar highs and lows. This also stops you losing weight because you store more fat...etc etc etc..... The book is short, easy to read, easy to follow. It has some simple diet plans you can follow if you don't know where to go next with this and some easy to remember instructions about how to read food packets at the supermarket. But once you know where to find the culprits it is pretty easy to avoid them. All in all WONDERFUL!
Rating: Summary: Lose because of less calories Review: I followed this diet for about 6 months. It was hard for me to eat the foods since I'm at college and I didn't have many choices. I lost 20 lbs, though. I'm so proud that I actually lost the weight but I have to say that I think the only reason I lost the weight was because I ate less. I just consumed less calories because I didn't have as many things to eat. I don't know why I could follow this diet more than I could other diets...it could have just been the point I was in my life. So, in other words, I think that if you wanna lose weight, the bottom line is that you have to reduce caloric intake and be motivated. Maybe this diet will be the one you can follow too, but you could also save some money and just try to not eat as much and decide if this is the time that you're ready to dedicate your time and motivation to this life-altering task.
Rating: Summary: It works!! Review: I had gained 60 pounds over 10 years despite "standard" sensible dieting, exercising, fad diets, etc. Finally, I found Sugar Busters and I am living proof it works!! It started when I went to buy a pair of blue jeans and couldn't fit into a pair of Size 20 Women's Stretch jeans. After 6 weeks of Sugar Busters, I bought a pair of Size 14 PETITE regular denims. That has been my incentive, with my goal to be size 10. I have been able to convert the do's and don'ts into every part of my family's lifestyle, including vacations, eating out and holidays AND most of the time my family doesn't even know it!! I'm having fun converting my family recipes into legal Sugar Buster meals. You don't even have the cravings or desires to "cheat." It was worth every cent I paid for the book!!
Rating: Summary: A riviting novel with a surprise at every turn! Review: sugar busters showed me the true meaning of crime. its about these renegade sugars who run amuck stealing from children tripping oldladies and just being plain mean. the heros of this book are sally and jed two kids who stick to the law. these nerds chase after the sugar and plan to teach it a lesson by making it do community servie. along their jurney to finding the sugar they have to make many important decisions about stuff like doing drugs and taking sexual advantage of small drunk children. at the end they bust the sugar and teach it a lesson it will never forget. this story tought me many important messages like how to chase after sugar and about rubber busdrivers. i think this is a book for children of all ages.and i recomend it to everyone who owns a red toothbrush.
Rating: Summary: It Works! Review: My husband at age 36 was very healthy... except for a cholesterol level of almost 300. It had been there for nearly 3 years when his internist told him if he wanted to live past his mid 40's, he's better make a lifestyle change. Of course he had my husband's attention, and then he recommended this book. He said he had seen it work, and wanted us to try. Meanwhile, I was 35, had given birth to two children, and hadn't done anything to lose those extra pounds I'd hung on to after the birth of our last child. We both knew it was time to get serious about our health, weight, and physical appearance. So, we bought the book. I read it once. Then I read it again, and this time used a highlighter. Then I read it again, and took notes on the really important stuff. We started the diet on Aug. 1, 1999. We found ourselves on a "glucose low" for about the first 2 weeks. Then our energy started to rise and we felt like we could really do it. We were eating so well, however, that we wondered it if would really work. We couldn't really tell a difference until the end of the 3rd week. I noticed my watch fit more loosely than before, and by the end of 10 weeks, I had lost 12 pounds, my husband had lost 10. By Christmas I had lost 20 pounds, and my husband had lost 25 (a little too much). After 4 months on the diet, his cholesterol level was down to 137, and we felt great! It's been 14 months since we changed our lifestyle with SugarBusters, and I've kept off 25 pounds and my husband has kept off 20. We eat well, enjoy the flavor of our foods, and love to entertain to turn others on to the fun and benefits of this way of life. This book was WONDERFUL... easy to read, and easy to understand. It made the biological case for the basis of the diet, and gave lots of examples to help you really understand and apply it to your life. It is not a DIET in terms of "lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks". It truly is a lifestyle change, and one that has been a huge success for us. I hope you can find the same success!
Rating: Summary: No More Heartburn Review: I am 44 years old, 5'6", and I was up to 169 pounds when a Doctor friend of mine recommended Sugar Busters. I travel almost weekly and used that as an excuse not to diet or exercise. Long story short, I have found that the sugar busters diet is extremely easy to follow while travelling as long as you are willing to ask a few simple questions. It is also easy for my wife at home while I am on the road. We have been on SB for about 8 weeks now, we both started exercising again (3 times a week), and we have lost ~15 pounds. Also, a side benefit from SB that I did not expect and nobody has mentioned is that almost daily heartburn before has vanished since the day we started SB. That alone was worth the "price of the ticket". This is an excellent quick read and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Sugar Busters Cut Sugar to Trim Fat Review: I was impressed with how easy this material was to absorb. The book immediately got me excited about making changes that not only made my body feel better but also took the weight off. I have never felt like I'm "not dieting" before until this book. Kudos to the authors.. My life has changed and this book helped make it possible.
Rating: Summary: Ends Pain and Depression Review: I have a background of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)and depression and cured both problems by avoiding sugar. I have always checked my clients' sugar intake. When this book came out, it was given to me by one of my clients who wanted me to review it. When I read it, I was thrilled that it was written so clearly as to the way sugar affects your body and so accurately. When another client came in from the Pain Clinic with 7 years of pain and depression, I discovered how much sugar she was eating. I suggested this book to see if it could help her depression. She read it, and applied it. After only a few weeks, she was no longer depressed but also pain free. She had her life back and attributes it to not eating sugar and reading this book. I have found the book to be user-friendly especially to folks who have a difficult time sticking to diets. Highly recommend it. Note: Do not go off of pain medication without checking with your doctor first.
Rating: Summary: 3 MDs and a former Fortune 500 CEO say: "Sugar is toxic." Review: This is the most unusual nutrition/diet book that I have read. Its strength is a reasonably thorough overview of how natural and processed sugars affect your body chemistry. Except for people with diabetes and hypoglycemia, some of this information will be new. I think it is a valuable book for people to read since surveys continue to show that most Americans believe that the way to cut down on their fat is to cut back on fats. As a result, sales of fat-free products are soaring along with waistlines, obeisity and weight-related diseases. One of the interesting factoids in the book was that middle-aged men around 50 have only 18 months more of life expectancy now in the United States than they did in 1900. This is true despite all of the advances made in health care that should extend life for those with cardiac disease and cancer. For example, did you know that eating excess sugar causes the body to make more cholesterol. Many people may be able to reduce cholesterol more with sugar reduction than with cholesterol-lowering drugs. Although it would have been nice to have taken a broader look at nutrition in this book, it is my understanding that it is correct that excess quickly-absorbed sugars (whether from Coca-Cola, corn or a candy bar) drive up your blood sugar level, cause your body to create insulin to store the sugar as fat, and suppresse the glucagen that causes your body to burn stored fat. There are excellent tables to show how these results vary after a high carbohydrate versus a high protein meal. Carbohydrates are turned by your body into sugar, even if they start out as starches. So you have to beware of baked potatoes as well as beer. Clearly, our health can stand a lot of improvement. It stands to reason that eating changes should be an important factor. While tens of millions diet, few actually succeed in keeping the weight off. This is one more sign that we are doing something wrong. The authors point out that sugars have been available to the masses for only a few generations. Prior to that, only the richest people suffered from too much sugar, bleached flour, and beer. As the rest of the world becomes wealthier, we face the risk of creating even more harm. I found the lists of what to eat more of and what to eat less of easy to follow and understand. I am not competent to comment on the recipes, fourteen day diet, and restaurant recipes. But if you are interested in such things, they are in the book. Be sure to learn the important lessons about avoiding excess sugar from this book. Then use that a springboard to learn more about what other nutritional changes can help you. I suggest Dean Ornish's book, Eat More, Weigh Less, as another good resource. He takes on the fat side of the intake equation in a thorough and useful way. After you have learned all about nutrition, go on to Dean Ornish's book, Love and Survival, on how human connections affect our health even more than nutrition does. Overcome as many stalls as possible about how you eat and relate to others to have the fullest, happiest, and most healthful life!
