Summary: Nay sayers should try it before they spout criticism
Review: I WAS A SKEPTIC! Say what you will, "SUGAR BUSTERS" WORKS! I've been on the "diet" (actually it's a lifestyle change) for a month now and have not only LOST 20 POUNDS but have GAINED A BETTER ATTITUDE. I'm not suffering from sugar highs or lows. I'm not crashing in the middle of the day anymore. And best of all, I never feel like I'm waiting to cheat. I LOVE WHAT I GET TO EAT, AND I'M NEVER STARVING. If you try it, you'll see it works. The book explains in VERY SIMPLE TERMS why it works. If you read it, you'll see it makes sense. Trust me, I work in a restaurant in New Orleans. We love to eat down here. This diet is the hottest thing in town and there is a reason for it. Not only has it worked for me, but it's shown GREAT RESULTS FOR EVERY CUSTOMER I'VE HAD that's on the plan. Try it. What do you have to lose? Don't listen to criticism from those who've never tried it. Listen to those who have. I'M STILL LOSING WEIGHT! IT WORKS! IT WORKS! IT WORKS!

Review: Sugar Busters!

1. Claim: "We would like to write a thick, fine-print book about all this good news, but a book that covers the weight loss implications of this way of eating has already been written by Michel Montignac of France, and William Dufty has described the evil effects of sugar itself in his Sugar Blues."

Fact: A book that bases its diet premises around obscure books published in 1976 and 1991 by unknown authors without health backgrounds should immediately raise suspicions about Sugar Busters! claims and recommendations. Furthermore, the book lists only 20 references throughout the book, many of them unknown textbooks and journals.

2. Claim: "Let's get to the point. SUGAR IS TOXIC! Sugar? Some sugar? Most sugar? All sugar? Toxic? Well, we will say that refined sugar in any significant quantity is toxic to many human bodies, and it certainly helps to make many bodies fat. Also, significant quantities of sugar are converted in our digestive systems from carbohydrates and starches. Certain [sic] of these foods cause a definite strain on the health of the body, probably the mind, and certainly the waistline. Sugar in fruit (fructose) will not normally hurt you, but eaten at the wrong time or in the wrong combinations can create both digestive and
metabolic problems."

Fact: A joint report released April 5, 1998, by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the importance of carbohydrates in the diet, noting that a high-carbohydrate intake can reduce the risk of obesity and protect against nutrition-related diseases. Another key finding of the report showed no evidence exists that sugars and starches promote obesity. Excess food consumption in any form, on the other hand, will promote body-fat accumulation if intake is not matched by energy expenditure.

3. Claim: "You m!ust virtually eliminate potatoes, corn, white rice, bread from refined flour, beets, carrots and, of course, refined sugar, corn syrup, molasses, honey, sugared colas and beer. Beyond that, you should eat fruit by itself. The list of foods allowed on the diet is extensive and will delight you by its length and variety."

Fact: An enduring motto of the American Dietetic Association reminds consumers that
"All Foods Can Fit." In fact, the authors' suggestions to limit specific grain foods and fruits and vegetables, run counter to healthy-eating guidelines recommended by the Food Guide Pyramid. Food-intake study reports such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Healthy Eating Index show Americans already eat plenty of protein and fat, but fall short of meeting dietary goals for grains, fruits and vegetables.

4. Claim: "Some of you will ask, "How much can I cheat on this diet?" ... Healthwise, some of you can cheat more than others and not gain weight, but if you have ever been significantly overweight, you had better cheat very infrequently."

Fact: These statements go beyond all common-sense thinking and reasoning. At any one time in the United States, one-third of adult women and one-fourth of adult men are on some type of diet. Obviously, diets generally fail or Americans would be a lean, healthy population. Experience shows that a sensible eating plan, one balanced with foods from the Food Guide Pyramid, coupled with physical activity, is the best way to maintain a healthful body weight.

5. Claim: "In general, fluids should be drunk in small quantities during meals. "Washing" food down frequently causes the bypass of proper chewing which is necessary to break food into smaller, more appropriate particles for better digestion. Excess fluid with meals also dilutes the digestive juices ... which may result in partially digested food."

Fact: No scientific evidence exists to support the claim! that consuming fluids during a meal negatively affects digestion. What's more, health professionals stress the importance of consuming fluids for maintaining and regulating fluid balance, preventing headaches and fatigue associated with dehydration and helping with weight loss. A sedentary individual needs at least eight glasses of fluid each day, and an active individual needs at least 10.

6. Claim: "With our approach, many individuals already have experienced significant weight loss and reduction in cholesterol (an average of approximately 15 percent) as well as improvement in performance which is so vital to everyone's success. In addition, many diabetics have been successful in achieving [sic] much better regulation of their blood
sugar levels."

Fact: No success-rate data or case studies of their followers are published anywhere in their book or in a scientific journal. If a reader calls the phone number at the back of the book, he or she must leave a message. (Our numerous phone inquiries went unanswered.)

Summary: And I always wondered why my low-fat diet didn't work!
Review: I was a frustrated, exercising, low-fat eating
fool until I read this book. I did lose a lot
of weight this way, but I attribute it more to
the exercise rather than the low-fat diet. I
have virtually eliminated sugar (and any enriched
flours) from my diet and have lost nearly 10
pounds in three weeks. My fat consumption has
even gone up to at least three times what it was,
and yet I still lost all this weight! I'm no
doctor, and initially I was skeptical, but the
results are there so I am absolutely convinced
that what this book says is true!

Summary: It works and is easy to do.
Review: My fasting triglycerides went from 320 to 56. I have fewer headaches. I don't get sleepy in the afternoon anymore. I lost 24 pounds. I feel great and I don't get hungry between meals. Try a new cookbook recently out based on the diet: "Sugar Free New Orleans."

Summary: Like most of my friends on Sugar Busters, it is the best!
Review: The diet allows one to eat normal amounts of food and still lose weitht. The foods eaten are filling and satisfying. I lost 32 lbs since July 6, 1997. Probably would have lost more, but the red wine reduces the weight loss. I am trying to find out if it is okay to stay on this diet as a lifestyle. I enjoy chicken, fish and other fowl and seafood so I don't think I eat too much fats! Great way to live at this point.

Summary: FINALLY, HOPE FOR THE TRULY OBESE.
Review: I had made up my mind that I would try one more "diet" book. If this program did not work, I was going to give up a 40 year attempt to be normal. I was a premature baby. Prior to my birth, my parents lost six little boys. Can you imagine how hard they tried to "keep me alive?" By the age of 6 I was on diet pills and the roughest rollercoaster ride in any child and adult's life . Name it, I tried it...everything but surgery and I refused that. Everything failed. I would faithfully follow low fat high carbohydrate diets with a 20 pound loss in a year. I was so creative with my meal planning and menus that I wrote the meal plans for the instructors! I wasn't stupid... the diets were just not working. I saw someone on television who had lost a lot of weight and she was promoting this book. I decided that I would try once more... but this was it. Sugar Busters! changed my life! I was not a failure, I was not "crazy"...it wasn't "demon-possession"...it was the "hidden" sugar in my diet! I had cut out desserts long ago. Little did I realize that my high carb "legal" friends were the enemy! In three days, I lost all cravings for sugar. Summary: Get energized and lose weight! Double whammy!!
Review: Subtitled: Cut Sugar to Trim Fat. This book is full of common sense.

In this day and age most of us know that sugar is the culprit for our malaise.

Many of us do not understand the compexity of how sugar affects our physical and mental state and the doctors who authored this book have done a wonderful job at educating the lay person.

I have personally been monitoring my intact of sugar and starches since February of this year, my glucose level was borderline. In only a few months I have found that I have so much more energy, less aches and pains and have lost almost 20 lbs. I have much more weight to lose but I am confident that I will continue in the right direction because I have learned and studied the benefits of a low carbohydrate program.

Summary: I've cut the sugar, and am cutting the fat!
Review: First off I must thank the wonderful Dr's. who did alot of research and wrote this wonderful book. I have tried every diet known to man and could never stick to it because really for as long as I did them nothing really happened to make me feel good about loosing weight. Thanks to this book I "FINALLY" feel good about myself. I really can do it. With the help of Sugar Busters I am finding my way to my new self. My doctor has been after me for years to loose weight and I've tried everything, even going to a nutritionist for 1 yr. and only loosing very little weight. In 2 months I've lost 20 lbs. on Sugar Busters and I have never found a more easy way of doing it either. Finally a plan where you can eat normally without measuring and figuring out food plans from day to day. I've learned a whole new way of eating. I was a carbohydrate addict and a chocolate lover. With this diet I have cut out my carbs. and have not had any chocolate at all for 2 months and I really don't miss them at all. The scales keep constantly moving with hardly any real effort at all. You just have to learn the right way to eat. I'm finally starting to build up my self-esteem again. I really feel wonderful about what I am doing and I haven't felt this way in I don't know how many years. I owe my new life to these Dr's. and their wisdom. Once again I say thank you to all of them. I recommend this book to anyone who is really serious about loosing those unwanted pounds. There is no need to try all the diets out there, I'm living proof that Sugar Busters works. If I can do this, believe me ANYONE can do it. If you really want to loose those unwanted pounds go right now and order this book. You'll see what I mean when I say it really works.
