Rating: Summary: Easy to follow and it works! Review: Since 1991 I put on 35 extra pounds.Whenever I looked in the mirror, I allowed myself to see someone who didn't look too bad. Of course, the "thin" clothes buried in the back of my closet told another story. I've tried to control my eating time and time again, only to be thwarted by a sweet tooth and cravings for junk foods. Six months ago my doctor advised me to lose weight and I pretty much ignored his order. Over the summer I saw a television program that talked about Sugar Busters! and the incredible weight loss people achieved. Three weeks ago I decided to purchase the book after seeing another program about Sugar Busters! and reading several reviews from people who were on the plan. The guidelines are simple to follow. Between the easy to understand language and sample menus, I've tailored what I call "my healthy eating plan". My eating lifestyle has turned around completely -- I don't find myself missing the old ways. I catch myself reaching for an apple instead of cookie, having a glass of water instead of a can of Coke. Packing a healthy lunch or preparing a delicious dinner of vegetables and lean meats instead of heading off to a fast food place or eating the wrong combination of foods. I eat better now than I ever did. I'm never hungry and my taste for sweets has dropped off dramatically. I "see" sugar in so many things. In three weeks I've lost 7 pounds...which I consider a nice, easy pace. I'd been avoiding the scale, but this week my pants started to feel loose, so I hopped on to check the progress. This week I'm going to start a walking program to complement the good eating. I'm more than pleased with Sugar Busters! I'm looking forward to completing...and maintaining... my weight loss with this plan. Sugar Busters! is not just a "diet". It's a way of life that I recommend to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Primer Review: Recommended by my doctor to read and follow. I did. Lost 25 pounds and 6 waist sizes in one month. In addition to this book, I read "Protein Power" that goes into more of the physiology and offers better guidelines on just how much of what you can eat.
Rating: Summary: It works despite what the experts say. Review: I have been eating low fat foods for years and my weight increased yearly. I followed the advice in this book and my weight has been decreasing for the first time in years, while my fat intake has increased. I can understand why nutritional experts have their doubts about this book. It certainly doesn't follow the conventional wisdom, and the authors give little scientific evidence that it works other than testimonials. I started losing weight painlessly and immediately on this diet. I don't count calories or fat grams and don't even worry much about protion size. There has to be something to it.
Rating: Summary: It's so common sensical Review: I've known for a long time that I needed to get the sugar out of my diet, and I was suffering terribly with my cravings. Sugar for me IS truly toxic. NASA did a study once in the mid '80's, and they discovered that sugar provided some energy to children, but it actually took an adult's level down with no real high. I didn't need them to tell me that, but it was nice to have it verified anyway. The foods that are banned are actually quite easy for me to avoid, and it sure beats the pyramid scheme. I already knew that I should limit my intake of fluids during a meal since I've had many doctors say the same thing. Filling yourself up before a meal was one thing since it moved through the system quickly, but they said to restrain myself during and directly after a meal. I'm very eager to start on this plan, and I will as soon as I throw some food out--that I never should have bought anyway.
Rating: Summary: A painless way to loose weight. Review: After seeing the doctors on television, I purchased this book and decided to give it a real try. No cheating! After a week I had lost 5 pounds and after two weeks a whole size. Two months later and I am down two sizes. It almost seems too easy but without any deprivation I have lost the weight without calorie counting. For everything you have to "give up" there is a reasonable substitute. More people need to consider this healthy way to loose weight. It's not a diet. It's a new way of eating.
Rating: Summary: Confused... Review: I just recently read an interview with Dr. Balart. He said you shouldn't eat any bread (sandwiches) at lunch time. In the book however, on the 14-day meal plan, almost everyday suggests having a sandwich as part of the lunch meal. I just started this diet, so I guess we will see how it works. I'm still a little confused on what I should eat in order to lose weight. I made a sandwich today, and now I'm wondering if I should eat it...
Rating: Summary: How sweet it is!!! Review: I've spent most of my adult life searching for a miracle diet that will give me great results while allowing me to continue in what my doctor has labeled a "sedentary" lifestyle. Finally, it's here!!! This book is great. And I don't have to do anything. For the longest time, I tried everything short of exercise to shed a few pounds off my "big boned structure". I tried Phen/fen for a while, but, like most Americans, grew tired of the voices that would come in the night. Just follow the directions by cutting back on sugar and you'll be suprised too! It's worked wonders for me. And while I didn't lose what some people would call "a lot" of weight, I can now walk outside unassisted. I'd like to personally thank the authors. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Rating: Summary: It's a life-saver!!! Review: At nearly 300 pounds, I had tried every "reasonable" diet there is. None of them offered any major success, and none freed me of the constant sugar cravings that have been with me all my life. I started the SugarBusters plan on July 1, 1998, and today (August 13) I have lost 24 pounds!!! But better than that, I am totally craving-free. To be finally free of such driving cravings is astonishing! After a sluggish first week, I am full of energy and feeling great. I eat normal meals with my family, just substituting whole grain carbohydrates for the white rice and pasta we used to eat. They have their sweets and snacks, but I have no desire for either anymore. I eat fruit in-between meals when I want something, and it is enough. I will live this plan for the rest of my life! And I say that with barely a backwards glance at brownies and donuts.... <grin>
Rating: Summary: What a load of bunk! Review: There's an unbelievable amount of distortion of medical facts in this book. There is also some good advice. Yes insulin is an important physiological factor in gaining weight and high glycemic-sugary-foods trigger this hormone, but the overal gestalt of this book is pretty much mass media nonsense. High carbohydrate diets ,when composed correctly, are incontestably the most healthful of all diets. We have about four fifths of the human race to verify that. The bottom line is:IF YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT,EAT LESS. There's no magic about it. The lazy crowd will forever be in search of tne magic, effortless formula. Hence, the popularity of this book.
Rating: Summary: not eating certain fruits & vegies is just plain dumb Review: Im sorry but I am a big vegie eater......and love fruit......no bananas? Also the book gives you no lists, you have to read the book and make lists. I was on the diet for one month..not one single pound........
