Summary: a good basic info book about sugar
Review: As an uninformed consumer, I found that the book gave me good basic info on how your body uses sugar. The book will point you the right direction on sugar control in your diet. It includes a sample 14 day diet plan, carbohydrate info and ranks foods within groups for sugar content.

Summary: Basic Nutrition
Review: I just finished this book a few days ago, so I can't give a testimonial saying I lost weight. But I feel better. I'm not considered overweight (although I could lose 10 lbs, so we'll see), but I ate way too much sugar. This book provides sound nutrition advice--cut out refined sugar, eat whole grain foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean meat--and cut down on saturated fat. It also helps you think twice before reaching for that cookie in a meeting. Most importantly, the book EXPLAINS WHY it's important to eat whole grains vs. enriched white bread and to cut out the sugar.

For those of you experiencing dizziness? Perhaps you're consuming too much Aspartame. I've experienced headaches the last few days because I didn't used to have diet sodas or other foods containing Aspartame--I am now cutting that out too. Use common sense: aspartame is a chemical, so it's probably not good for you, so cut it out! And exercise is good for you, so excercise-- even though the authors say you can lose weight without it (although they still recommend that you do exercise). I truly can't imagine anyone having side effects from this way of eating-- it's basic nutrition. So you can't have carrots, corn or white potatos-- who cares? You can get those particular vitamins elsewhere--there are plenty of other veggies out there.

Summary: Painlessly, Part 4 - Mr. Skinny Pants debuts
Review: I recommend that the doubters, like Alice of California, also read the Schwarzbein Principle, wherein Dr. Schwarzbein explains how excessive insulin from eating excessive carbohydrates DOES cause the body to manufacture cholesterol. All these books promote is a balanced, more natural diet...restricting refined, overly sweetened foods that are processed beyond recognition. America grows ever more fat on refined, processed, sweetened carbohydrates. I grow ever more thin on meats, fish, veggies, fruit and whole grains. Americans have been convinced that fat is evil and sugar is good. Time to wise-up before that new Crispy Creme donut franchise opens up next door...

Summary: Just another fad diet
Review: I read this book because I've been hearing a person rave and rave about Sugar Busters. Once I read the book, I had more concerns and was more convinced this was just another fad diet book trying to grab dollars in a huge market.

I was most distressed by the authors' attitude on exercise. They were practically bragging that one of the authors lost weight even though his only exercise was "lifting the fork to his mouth".

I can understand and appreciate the importance of diabetics and other people with diagnosed insulin problems restricting foods in an effort to regulate blood sugar. But these fad diet books encourage too many people to make a diagnosis that may not apply to them. Only a small portion of the population is insulin resistant, but these books make it sounds like a nationwide epidemic. That's something that should be discussed with a physician, not handled through a book.

I applaud the folks who have lost weight following this plan, but I wonder how many of you will keep if off for any period of time, especially if you're not exercising regularly.

Summary: A dangerous fad ... if I could give it zero stars I would.
Review: I'm supposed to believe that potatoes, corn, beets, and carrots causehigh cholesterol and obesity; but beef, chicken, eggs, and dairy make you lean and lower your cholesterol?!

Only animal products have cholesterol, AND NO FRUIT OR VEGETABLE OR GRAIN HAS CHOLESTEROL OR CAUSES IT!

The authors of this book also fail to mention the myriad risks and dangers associated with a high-protein diet.

I'm sorry, but there is just too much evidence for me out there implicating animal products with cancer and other undesirable ailments. Don't believe these "best sellers" ... as a matter of fact, don't believe me either! Do your research ... don't just accept what people tell you. SUGAR. That is one thing I agree with the authors on: sugar and refined foods don't do you any good and are actually quite harmful. But a carrot making you fat and raising your cholesterol? Give me a break!

Summary: Support for Insulin-Conscious Eating
Review: I encountered "Sugar Busters!" while preparing my own book ("The Gourmet Prescription: High Flavor Recipes for Lower Carbohydrate Diets") for publication. As a physician, opponent of carbohydrate abuse, advocate of insulin control, and author of a lower carbohydrate gourmet cookbook, I congratulate the authors for blowing the whistle on the high-carbohydrate-low-fat crowd. "Sugar Busters!" is an antidote to the carbohydrate binge we've been on for the past decade. It should be required reading for anyone interested in weight control and cardiovascular health.

Summary: An excellent eating plan for life!
Review: My wife and I started this eating plan (hard to say its a diet) in February, 1999. I've lost 40 pounds and she's lost 25. Neither of us has felt deprived of food. She recently had a physical and her cholesterol had gone from 257 to 177. We both had indigestion problems that have totally disappeared (hers was reflux). We both feel like we're eating more now, and the weight continues to melt away. In addition, we both noticed a surge of energy within the first week. This isn't even an eating plan - its magic! A friend went on it 3 months ago to lower his triglycerides. They went from 418 to 207! In addition, he's at his lowest weight in 20 years. Get this book - it will change your life!
