Rating: Summary: I LOVE THIS BOOK! Thanx Suzy! Review: I simply love it! This one is better then the other two (Suzanne Somers' Eat Great, Lose Weight [not very comprehensive] and Suzanne Somers' Eat, Cheat, and Melt the Fat Away [concentrates too much on menopause].) I think this book is the best one; it explains food-combining in greater detail then her other two books. In general, this life style plan works very well. When I got into the whole "dieting rush" I tried Judy Mazel's Hollywood Diet. The reviews for that diet like all others were very promising - "loose weight, feel great!" Right ... if I will ever look at prunes or dried apricots one more time, I will puke my guts out. You loose water weight because you can hardly stay off the toilet. If feeling great includes hardly staying up on your feet (eating grapes all day), constant diarrhea (LOTS of dry fruit .. ewww), face full of zits (SUGAR), bones cracking (due to lack of calcium in the diet) and menstruation missing (hardly any protein to regenerate cells), then Mazel is my goddess! She's been doing this for 20 some years. Poor woman! In her book it says that her parents put her on diet pills when she was 9! I should have known better ... Well, after Mazel's diet I was too skeptical to try anything else .. BUT this book changed everything. The food is fabulous, recipes are very delicious ... and you can eat edible things, especially when you go out to eat! I also exercise 4-5 times a week; I got so much energy now, it's easy to wake up early in the morning. I lost 40 lb. using this plan. I am very happy with it and try to get all my friends and family to join me. If you just bought this book, you will love it! Good luck and happy Somersizing!
Rating: Summary: Get With The Program! Review: Listen people . . . Suzanne isn't the creator of this program. This way of eating has been around a long, long time. Suzanne deserves the credit of investigating and discovering the true effects of proper food combination. This can and does work if you follow the rules. Her recipes don't cheat you from sweets, she doesn't force you to eat foods you don't like, and she certainly doesn't hold back the fact that healthy eating is a way of life. The best part of her program is that there is no portion control. If you combine properly, eat to your heart's content. The weight WILL come off and stay off. AND, once you reach your weight goal, you can ease into level 2. It's great! I can't say enough about her program, and my husband and I have been very successful thanks to her "easy to understand" approach.
Rating: Summary: I'm Sold!!!!! Review: I have followed this program for over a year now and I can show you my great big pants that don't fit anymore to prove that it works! I espescially like this program because it doesn't leave any food groups out except for unnecessary sugar. For this reason, I have successfully, and HEALTHILY, followed the program even during my last pregnancy and while nursing my baby. This was absolutely safe because with this program you don't leave out anything, you just eat from all food groups in certain orders. After my first pregnancy which left me 50 lbs heavier, this program was a godsend and I was relieved to know that I could eat the foods I and my baby needed as well as many things I craved and still stay at a healthy weight. In fact, no one knew I was pregnant for months because I trimmed down in many areas while my baby grew! I felt great, and my baby was perfectly healthy the whole time. I will say I don't exactly worship Suzanne Sommers, although I do have a lot of respect for her. The plan she offers does however, work. I have recommended it to all my friends and continue to talk it up to anyone else who will listen!
Rating: Summary: Scrumptious and effective! Review: I have been using the Somercising method and Ms. Somers' recipes for over 18 months, and it has led me back to better health, better energy, lowered weight -- and the chance to eat WONDERFUL food without sacrificing anything! So the principles work, and the food is gourmet. The book is beautiful and appetizing as well. The pictures and the presentation are extraordinarily seductive and luscious! Try it -- you'll like it!
Rating: Summary: Misleading Review on Suzanne Somers' Somersizing Program Review: This is an addendum to my previous review, in response to "Dangerous Diet" from a reader in MA. The comments by this reviewer are a bit misleading, and I would like to comment. First, on their suggestion that perhaps the high protein may have contributed to Suzanne's breast cancer. Had the reviewer thoroughly read the book, she would know that breast cancer is familial (tends to run in families) and that Suzanne's sister also had dealt with breast cancer several years ago, unrelated to Suzanne's program. Additionally, the protein/fats controversy... I think her success stories documented through the book speak for themselves... but one that comes instantly to mind is her own husband, Alan, who had always had a dangerously high cholesterol level, in spite of the fact that he was primarily a fruit lover and followed low fat food diets consistently. It wasn't a problem for him, as he loved fruits and vegetables... however, always at cholesterol check times, his cholesterol was very elevated. They doctors would put him on even more of a restriction of fats, with still MORE fruits and veggies, etc., he would return several weeks later for more blood work, only to find that his bad cholesterol was even higher! Ultimately, the doctors advised cholesterol lowering medication, which we know has some unpleasant side affects. Ultimately, he succumbed to Suzanne's program of eating in the right combinations of food entirely, and when he later returned for his regular lab work, his cholesterol was under control and lowered to a safe, normal range! The doctors were speechless of course, when they asked what he'd been doing. However, HE was convinced and this program has become his way of life now. He wasn't overweight to begin with, but this program worked wonders for his health from a cholesterol standpoint, as well as other areas of his health and he is more trim and fit than ever. However, the benefits of 'losing weight' on 'level one' are tremendous also... and as she states in her book, referencing research and studies... "Controlling you insulin is the key to losing weight. FOOD CANNOT BE STORE AS FAT, WITHOUT THE PRESENCE OF INSULIN." As we age, many people become insulin resistent and produce excess amounts not necessary, and then no matter what, the sugars and starches are converted to fat. I felt the need to respond to the "Dangerous Diet" reviewer on these particular points... I've read the research and I've read Suzanne's book... I can only say... try it, be serious about it, and enjoy your results!
Rating: Summary: I now recommend this book to everyone I know!! Review: This is a fabulous program... I recommend this series of Suzanne's books very highly. I'm a sweets eater also, but I've found the 'level one' desserts she speaks of and provides recipes for, i.e., her cheesecake... to be out of this world, for a dieter! It takes care of that desire for something sweet! It's terrific. I've done Adkins diet (the proteins and fats, very low carbohydrates) and have had success with it over the years, but it's much more restrictive than Somersizing. I'm sold! And it isn't just water weight that you lose, it's actual fat. Perhaps the reviewer who claimed she thinks it was water weight loss should understand that some of us just cannot eat certain things... yes, it will seem like you've gained, because what you HAVE gained IS fluid... from eating the wrong things or combinations. I have that same problem. The clinical/medical research backup she sites is very informative. I know it is valid, as I've followed Dr. Adkins for years now, and he sites similar things. This is a great book and program... and it's a fabulous way of eating (for those of us who just LOVE to eat, no matter how fat or how much we weigh). It can be a wonderful way of life for any of us. My husband, who does not have a weight problem, loves the recipes in this book that I've prepared anyway! One big thing for me was the caffeine... I just had to have my coffee (even when I was on Atkins) and my Diet Dr. Pepper... As I've gotten older, on Adkins I would just stall... eating all the directed foods, etc., and would lose a few pounds and stop even though I continued the diet plan (when I was much younger, it worked regardless of the caffeine I drank... Not so as I'm older and into menopause years)... I FINALLY forced myself to switch to drinking decaf coffee and tea... I've tried several brands until I found one that I can actually say... this is geat coffee, even if it IS decaf! And got myself off the Diet Dr. Pepper (which does have a lot of caffeine in it)... Voila! After finally accomplishing this... this program is working great for me. I couldn't believe it... or didn't want to believe... that caffeine was the culprit. I recommend this program highly (just as I have for years, to others, about Adkins, because they work..!), but this one is even better and less restrictive, allowing you more carbohydrates... in fact unlike Atkins, you don't even count the carbohydrates... nor calories, as long as you watch your combinations carefully. It doesn't seem like dieting at all. Laying off sugars and starches, and starches that turn to sugar... is NOT unhealthy! Quite the contrary. As the book says, we NEED natural fats in our diet (no more of this low fat processed foods full of chemicals)for hormone balance. Think about it, and try the book. Read it from cover to cover and try some of her recipes. Most all are quick and easy... and above all DELICIOUS! Enjoy this and loose those pounds and that fat around your middle, and the 'tummy pooch' that NO amount of dieting, or 'low fat' processed foods, or exercise will get rid of. It just isn't gonna happen for middle aged and/or menopausal women, who continue eating the way they've been programed to. Try this. You won't be disappointed. The rave reviews and success stories are valid. Dieting is most always never easy, but this one is!!! Enjoy!!!
Rating: Summary: A Dangerous Diet Review: You may lose weight initally with this diet, ("diet" meaning way of eating), but you will not be making yourself healthy. There is a difference between good fat and bad fat and Somers has you eating too much of the bad kind. Just because you may lose some weight doesn't mean you will have good cholesterol and homosystine levels. As far as there being "bad" carbs like carrots and bananas - Somers is out of her mind. Read "The Okinawa Program" if you really want to know how to achieve a lean body and good health. The Okinawa Program is based on 25 years of research. Although things like carrots and bananas do have a high natural sugar content, they also have fiber, which slows down the body's absorption of glucose. Somers would have you stay away from these foods saying that they make you fat, and have you snack on some fat laden protein instead. She has you eating waaaaaay too much protein on this diet. Again, read The Okinawa Program to see how most of us way exceed our daily requirements. High fat (especially bad fat) diets (along with a high glucose load) have been linked to hormone related cancers. Somers herself is battling breast cancer - and although I feel very sorry that she has to go through this, it's possible this high fat eating plan played a role in her disease.
Rating: Summary: Not for the Snackaholic Review: I love Suzanne and lost over 20 pounds with her books. Unfortunately, I continue to lose the same 20+ pounds over, and over, again. Why? Because it doesn't allow for snacking on sugary products which most of us are addicted to. On her program, I lose 4 or 5 pounds in a week. That sounds like a miracle but it isn't. Why? Because during that weekend I'll eat something I shouldn't, and all, or almost all, the weight I lost during that week will mysteriously return overnight. I know it's my own fault because I shouldn't have had the piece of Chocolate Mousse Cake from the Cheesecake Factory. Finally, I have come to the conclusion that I am not losing fat on this diet, but water weight. That's the only explanation I can come up with since so much of the weight comes back overnight. If anyone has any info for me regarding exciting snacks I can eat on this program and not put back on the weight, let me know. Sorry, Suzanne, but I still love you, anyway.
Rating: Summary: Get Skinny on Fabulous Food and Lyposuction Everyone! Review: I am amazed at how mindless the buying public really is. Get this, if every human being decides to exercise at least 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes of intense cardio fitness they would be amazed at how much weight they could really lose just by doing that. The fact is, too many people are lazy and don't want to pave their own path. I won't deny that Suzanne Somers has definitely made herself look great over the years exercising and eating right but you have to understand to look like her you DO need lyposuction because to have her perfect body is something of a work of art. Having a perfect body means manipulation because we aren't meant to look like Barbie and Ken. I am a runner, I run 40 miles a week, eat right, exercise and make the most of anything that involves strenuous activity. I am not a hardbody, I am not an adonis by any means, but I look good and I feel good and if that is what it takes than that's what it takes. You don't need expensive books or costly psycho therapy to attain such satisfactions. Being a person who takes interest in fitness and nutrition I know several folks who are in great shape, eat right and do take part in lyposuction! It's a great alternative for some. It's not bad to have lyposuction. With the exception of few misguided operations lyposuction is predominently safe and effective IF you do your part in maintaining good physical fitness and nutrition-which is what Suzanne Sommers is trying to tell you. Unfortunately, this book is most certainly not for everyone since it sells carbos as a mainstay. But if you don't work out or are not active you will most certainly gain weight and not muscle because carbos are your storage energy which turns to fat if not used. For those reviews who bash Suzanne for getting lyposuction, you obviously aren't a person who has a clue about the subject and are using second hand information. Lyposuction is a good thing and although it isn't something for me, it most certainly is something for many and is very effective for those who have had those inherited trouble spots since birth that you just can't get rid of no matter how much exercise and calorie counting you do.
Rating: Summary: Bad for me Review: I bought this book and tried the recipes but I got sick in my stomach. My first day I tried the onions and eggs and it made my stomach flip flop all day and it was bad. The next two days I tried others and when I went to bed at night my stoamch hurt me so bad and everytime I moved my food came back into my mouth and both nights I sat straight up and almost up chucked on my husband. If your stomach can not tolerated that much grease and onions do not try this book. If you have a cast iron stomach then by all means give it a whirl. I just wanted to slim down like Suzanne but I guess not this time around. Good luck!
