Summary: Book saves Grandma's Reputation
Review: My granddaughter was recently diagnosed with Celiac. With the holidays coming; a daughter who does not like to cook; and a granddaughter who felt left out, I ordered the book. It saved my life (and reputation as "grandma that always has goodies for the grandchildren") The lighthearted manner in which Bette Hagman wrote this book is entertaining and informative at the same time. Her common sense approach to the problem was easy to follow. Bottom line: after looking at my book my daughter bought one and is cooking from scratch, for the first time using the easy to follow recipes.

Summary: Excellent, could not live without it.
Review: My husband has been wheat intollerant for about 4 years now and your books have saved us. I am wondering if spelt flour is safe as it has some excellent baking properties and tasts more like a wheat bread. Please send email

Summary: A necessity for the gluten-free kitchen
Review: The bean-flour bread recipes alone make this book a worthwhile buy. No more dry, crumbly, grainy rice breads for me! Finally, individuals on a gf diet can have a bread with a texture just like wheat bread. Directions both for bread machines and for mixing by hand are included. Thanks to Bette, my gluten-free, dairy-free son will eat sandwiches again! This book also provides tips that are helpful for adapting recipes on your own, including descriptions of different flours and substitution recommendations. Plus, there is a wide variety of easy dinner recipes.

Summary: This book is a must-have!
Review: This is my first of Bette Hagman's books. I first checked it out at the library and then ordered it from Amazon. The recipes are simple, yet tasty. The breads taste like regular bread (not dry or crumbly) and the brownies are just wonderful. I was so thrilled to be able to make bread and dessert for my daughter and actually have it taste good. It definitely makes me feel better to be able to offer her an alternative that isn't dry or tasteless. This book is a definite must for anyone needing to cook gluten-free. Thanks to this book, my daughter can enjoy PB&J sandwiches again!

Summary: Wonderful book for those with wheat and gluten sensitivities
Review: This really is a great book. The author goes beyond just recipes (although those alone are worth the price of the book!) to give us a whole lot of intersting and important information. This book caters to those with celiac disease, and there is a whole section of questions and answers in the front which addresses a number of relevant issues for those dealing with celiac and related diseases.

That being said, the best part about this book are the recipes! Hagman covers everything from soup to nuts. The ingredients are, for the most part, readily available at your grocery or health food store. There is a large section on breads, both rice-based and rice-free. She includes directions for making bread by hand or using several sizes of breadmakers. There are also some which omit eggs and dairy, a nice plus for those with additional sensitivities.

All in all this is a terrfic book, one which can liberate those dealing with wheat and gluten allergies, allowing us to "eat like the rest of the world." Don't hesitate!

Summary: Great recipes! Definitely fast
Review: This was my first Bette Hagman cookbook and it was not my last. As a person who must now cook and bake for a celiac I must say that baking is no longer a choice, it is a necessity. I knew very little when I picked up this book. As I read it, I learned that I needed to restructure my kitchen training, but I need not be afraid of using new ingredients. After consulting this book, I could quickly make a complete dinner including desert that tasted great and fulfilled our nutritional needs. Goodbye chicken, rice and steamed broccoli for dinner!

What I appreciate most about this book is not the "healthy" aspect of the title, but the "fast" part. Her advice on making and keeping the mixes on hand is truly helpful. I especially love the dream pastry mix! Each of the recipes in the book can be made in less than an hour if you have made some of the mixes ahead. I highly recommend this book for anyone on a celiac diet who has a busy life and little time for baking. And one more thought.....I have never mail-ordered a pre-made mix or an unusual flour and I live in a very remote community in Alaska. Thanks again Bette!
