Rating: Summary: I love this cookbook!!! Review: I bought this book mid-July 2002 after having months of severe pain whenever I ate anything. Within days, my system had stabilized and I've been enjoying eating more than I have in years. I've made approximately 30 of the recipes since I got this cookbook and have totally loved every one of them. The book's introduction clearly and concisely explains what contributes to digestive problems. The recipes are nicely laid out with easy to follow instructions. I love Heather's philosphy of not seeing yourself as being deprived by what you can't eat but rather as having the opportunity to explore new tastes. The recipes are varied with incredibly interesting flavours. I tell all my friends about this book--whether they have digestive problems or not. It really is incredible. It's the only cookbook I use now and is topping my Christmas list to give to anyone who enjoys good food.
Rating: Summary: Positive Results Review: I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to control the symptoms of IBS.This book has been such a help for my 12 year old son recently diagnosed with IBS. The recipes are easy and delicious. Two of his favorites are the lemon glazed sticky bread and the mushroom and sundried tomato bruschetta. The bruschetta recipe, I make almost weekly. These recipes are also enjoyed by people not needing to follow the diet.
Rating: Summary: An answer that changed my life Review: I was suffering from IBS and not getting results when I stumbled upon Heather's website on the Internet. The website eventually became the book, and I bought it as soon as it was published. The recipes are wonderful, especially the desserts. My non-IBS friends love the Better than Cheesecake and the Peppermint Fudge Cake as much as I do. Some other reviewers have complained that the recipes are "too elaborate" for everyday meals. I appreciate the more exotic and interesting ideas. I already know how to make plain grilled chicken, rice or baked potatoes;I like having other ideas for dinner. Thanks, Heather! I am eagerly awaiting your next book.

Rating: Summary: I have my life back! Review: I started this year depressed and hopeless. I was in pain most of the time and couldn't eat anything without it causing me severe intestinal distress. A friend of mine at college recomended Heather's cookbook to me (he has IBS as well) and it has changed my life. By following her advice in the cookbook and in "IBS: The First Year" I have managed to reclaim my existence. I can now eat meals without fearing the aftermath and I haven't missed a single day of work since graduation due to an IBS flare up. Because I am not in pain all the time my depression has lessened and I don't feel helpless anymore. I've also lost 50 lbs since January 2002 just because of my change in eating habits. When I first started trying to change things I was so frustrated and upset. I e-mailed Heather, not really expecting a response. She responded within 24 hours with truely helpful suggestions to get me started on the path back to life. I have already thanked her personally several times for all she has given me, and I hope you will find her books just as helpful as I have. She gave me what no gastrointerologist could - my life.
Rating: Summary: helpful for BOTH types of IBS Review: A friend and I have been sharing the copy of _Eating for IBS_ that I checked out of the library, and we've both been following Van Vorous's diet with excellent results--and we have different types of IBS. So PLEASE try the plan in this book regardless of your symptoms--you'll notice that those who claim it won't help with constipation haven't tried the diet themselves! As for the recipes, I've tried three so far; the Soothing Sweet Peppermint Green Tea and the Garden Veggie Lo Mein were very good; the Sweet Moroccan Jeweled Couscous was too sweet. More importantly, there are dozens of other recipes in the book that I can't wait to try--not to mention that I can't wait to buy my own copy of the book. So, enjoy!
Rating: Summary: This book saved my life Review: Anyone who suffers from any type of digestive disorder should get this book. I was diagnosed with IBS about six years ago. My doctor sent me home with an single sided piece of paper telling me not to eat sugar, red meat (I was a vegetarian), chocolate and coffee. After giving up those things I was still a mes. Because of this book I was able to go on a road trip this summer and an amusement park!!! Buy this book!!!
Rating: Summary: IBS-D Review: Eating for IBS by Heather Vanvourous has been a god send to me. The contents of this book have helped me to be a "normal" person again. The MANY doctors I've seen did not help one iota, but following the suggestions/recipes in this book was the best thing that happend to me in the past 10 years. If any reader has IBS-D, this book is a MUST READ. Also helpful, is "The First Year IBS" by the same author. Many, many thanks to Ms Van Vourous.
Rating: Summary: This book has changed my life. Review: Heather's compassionate and informative look at the often misunderstood condition of IBS is excellent. She not only provided IBS sufferers with delicious recipes to enjoy, she explained in detail how to manage this condition. She gave helpful suggestions on what foods to avoid and explains why. I, like so many others was told by my GI specialist to "eat more fiber" when I was diagnosed 6 years ago. Only after reading Heather's book did I understand that there are 2 types of fiber. She also has suggestions for herbal remedies, such as peppermint tea which are amazingly helpful. For all the chocoholics out there - try the peppermint fudge cake and never miss out on your favourite food again!
Rating: Summary: I have my life back! Review: Thanks to "Eating For IBS", I am once again a normal person. As soon as I began using her eating strategy, a miracle transpired - my IBS symptoms disappeared entirely! Now her easy orange miso avocado & cucumber salad has become a favorite along with her cinnamon zucchini bread and many other tasty dishes. Her international "ethnic" cuisine assures great variety and zest. Heather's book is intelligently written in easy to understand language and very informative. She has created a simple yet comprehensive guide on how to eat absolutely delicious meals that actually stabilized my colon immediately. Her strategy of substituting safe foods for "trigger" foods makes sense and really works. I finally understand how my vegetarian diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole wheat were causing attacks. I was also consuming more than two entire packages of FiProFlax fiber a week (that's [money]/year) to control my IBS without much success because it is insoluble fiber! Doctors never told me that there were two kinds of fiber and that I needed to eat the soluble kind. But because Heather makes this very clear distinction, I have my life back. I highly recommend her book!
