Summary: SOMEWHAT OF A RE-HASH.......
Review: I have read many of the popular diet books as of late and bought Ms. Somers book because it sounded different. It sounded easy-going and rather lavish with it's 'Fat is your Friend' foundation. After reading the book thoroughly and trying to digest the contents, I have decided that her method cannot help but 'melt' away those pounds - it would be guaranteed success to follow this plan; but I won't subject myself to her conditions.

If you took three of the popular diet books, The Atkin's Diet, Sugar Busters! and The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, and tossed all of their theories and principles up in the air and then permitted them to settle in one spot, that would be Ms. Somers' book, with pictures of her family extra. She advocates the same things as Dr. Atkins and the two doctors that wrote 'Addict's...'.

Then she expands upon those ideas by disallowing caffeinated coffee, diet drinks (which she calls 'poison') and most kinds of milk. Food combining has been around for a long time, but Ms. Somers seems to have become rather fascist in it's delivery. There are so many complicated rules to remember about what and when you can eat that it boggles the mind.

She does explain the underlying reasoning and why it will work for everyone, ketosis. There is a lot of defensive talk about those that do not believe this method of dieting is safe. She tries to refute those statements over and over again. On at least ten occasions, she explains why insulin spikes in your blood and why it is unhealthy for this to occur. The diet is very strict in the beginning and then relaxes a bit when one's goal weight is reached.

The recipes in the back of the book are tempting looking and I just wish that I had the time that it must take to create them. She says they are 'fast and easy', but she doesn't include shopping time in the prep time - there are many ingredients involved that one does not normally have on hand.

I think Ms. Somers has her own best interests and sometimes ours, at heart. But she approachs this lifestyle change in a most abrupt manner - ! I think I will look for an easier way to lose the weight and still keep my wits about me. The caffein withdrawal alone can be a very bad start!

(I, too, can snatch several theories from several books and come up with a plan - but it will be kinder and gentler)

Summary: Eat, no cheat and hopefully I'll get skinny LOL
Review: I chose this book as part of a book club for about $.... lol I saw is as one of the books to choose from and I said what the hay. It sounded interresting and I am tired of being fat - actually more tired of being tired all the time. UGH! When it came I read it in about a day and put it aside for about a week. This past monday I started this "new lifestyle". Thank God I had already stopped drinking caffeinated beverages two weeks earlier or I would have felt like complete ... lol Caffeine headaches are the worst for me as I always end up with a migraine and sick to my stomach. Anyway.. I had already gone through the hell some people talk about when they start this program.(I had pretty much stopped eating white bread anyway, and, I stopped drink/eat things with aspartame 5 years ago because I found out it does bad things to me It's like I"m finding the bad things in my life and knocking them off one by one and not really trying too hard lol) I've been on this program for about 4 days and I feel great! I'm not bloated, not so tired and I actually eat nice size meals 3 times a day. What a concept! I was never one to diet - never tried- because they always seemed too restrictive. The only thing I'm gonna miss on this "lifestyle" is an ham sandwhich (no carbs and pro/fats together). If that's the only thing I have to sacrifice to look good and feel better about myself then it's a deal.

Summary: Suzanne Somers' Eat, Cheat, and Melt the Fat Away
Review: An excellent choice. She has a medical doctor explain the biology of why this lifestyle will and does work as well as numerous testimonies. I love the recipes also.

Summary: A Great Book
Review: I think in order to pass judgement on this book you have to thoroughly read it and then try the food combining progam. That's what I did and I have had great results in only a few weeks. I'm so glad that a clelebrity is endorsing this method of eating. With the media constantly telling us 'no fat allowed' I think it's great that someone with Suzanne's exposure is endorsing something that is not only healthy, but actually works. If you're having trouble losing weight or maintaining you weight, I would highly recommend reading this book.

Summary: To Colorado Springs
Review: Congratulations to the reader from Colorado Springs who has finally found in her ultimate wisdom the causes behind breast cancer. I will refrain from the names I would like to call you and only speak from my experience. My mother died from breast cancer three years ago at age 52, was diagnosed at 49. She was the most fit, healthy, vibrant woman you would ever meet and ate great. Was on the stairmaster for an hour a day. If criticizing Somers and not following her plan makes you and your women friends and family feel better and safer from breast cancer, then be my guest. However, bringing the subject of this author's personal stuggle in a review of her book is inappropriate, unfounded nutritionally and downright meanspirited. Shame on you. Ms. Somers programs is not for everyone but has helped a lot of people to become healthier eaters.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: This book lacks vital information
Review: Somersizing works but the program lacks information regarding how to properly balance your carbohydrate and protein/fat intake on a weekly basis. I do applaud Suzanne Somers' efforts to educate those of us who have been submitted to the low-fat, high carb diet craze that has overtaken America.

If you would like more complete information on food combining get 'Eat Yourself Slim' by Michel Montignac. He created the original program that Suzanne Somers and Dr. Schwarzbein uses.

Summary: Get Real!
Review: It is hard to take seriously a writer who is concerned about our ingestion of sugar, white flour, potatoes(!) and carrots(!) but encourages the use of artificial sweeteners like saccharin and her embryonic ingredients-yet-to-be-named SomerSweet. If you need encouragement getting off the white stuff, read William Dufty's Sugar Blues, a much better read and a more convincing argument against the use of sugar.

Summary: Good book, but skeptical about the diet itself....
Review: I have read Suzanne Somer's book and in theory like what I hear, but following it, one has to eliminate basic traditional (healthy) items like a tuna sandwich. Hard to put into practice. I also don't understand Diana Schwarzbein's support of the book because even though she agrees with raised insulin being the cause of overweight, her program is more similar to the Zone....carbs, protein and fats at every meal...a totally different approach....so why does she endorse Suzanne Somer's book? That is odd to me. I enjoyed this book simply because I felt I "got to know" Suzanne Somers better. I have to admit I wondered if there was a protein/cancer link also. I hope not and I hope Suzanne wins her battle against cancer and follows whatever diet her doctor tells her to follow.

Summary: More Great Recipes
Review: I only gave this book 3 stars because I found it to contain mostly the same information in her 2 previous books. However, if you are looking for more delicious recipes from Suzanne, you will love this book. I only wish she had just made this a collection of recipes instead of a re-hash of the material in her other books.

I also want to mention that while Suzanne is not a nutritionist or a dietician, she isn't claiming to be, she's just sharing with us what works for her.

You might also want to check out "The Schwarzbein Principle" by Dr. Diana Schwarzbein, the endocrinologist who wrote the introductions to Suzanne's books. Her explanations of why we are overweight as a society are nutritionally sound (according to my doctor).

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: what about the introduction
Review: In the 25 reviews of this book that I've just read I didn't see anyone refer to the introduction written by Diana Swarzbein,MD. She is an endocrinologist that specializes in the treatment of diabetes and other diseases and is solidly behind Suzanne. She has her own book out called The Swarzbein Principle which goes a lot more into the science behind this type of diet and is therefore a bit more complex. I looked up the reviews of The Swarzbein Principle and the very first one is by a medical student who's been on her diet five years and supports it and her reading of the biochemistry behind it. Look it up on Amazon, so take that to the lady who said there's "not one shread of science behind it"...talk to the people who use it...Paul
