Rating: Summary: The best nutrition information I've found Review: This cookbook has changed my entire approach to eating. It has helped me understand why I still feel hungry after eating a very filling meal and why eating the "bad" carbs makes me unsatisfied and crave sweets. I have followed the recommended way of eating for a week and feel unbelievably good. I no longer have intense headaches before I go to bed or when I wake up. I no longer feel as tired or irritable. While the first part of the book does feel somewhat like a medical textbook, it is all valuable information and has helped me more than I can say. I have also really enjoyed the recipes. They certainly don't make you feel like you are on a restricted diet. My husband has said that a few of the meals are the best I have ever made. So, for many reasons I am grateful to have found this book.
Rating: Summary: Good-Carb rather than Low-Carb Cooking... Review: This cookbook is good (unrefined) carb rather than low carb so it might have limited application for those on the Atkins diet. But for the rest of us there's lots of healthy recipes, tips on cooking, grocery shopping and dining out, and a good explanation of insulin's role in the body and the concepts of Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load. I use recipes from this book and the SUGARBUSTERS Quick and Easy Cookbook. Woodruff, the author of several other cookbooks, covers her bases by making most recipes low-fat as well. There is some use of sugar, honey, fruit juice and the like, so if you're keen on limiting their intake in your diet you could subsitute non-caloric sweeteners, such as NutraSweet for cold foods and Splenda for the cooked dishes. Or you could just cut out the sugar altogether as I did in making the Sourdough French Toast, which with the cinnamon made no difference in the taste, IMO. Some of the ingredients listed are a bit esoteric and a few of the recipes may be too fussy for everday cooking. But in general this is a well-rounded cookbook, not a fad diet but a healthy lifestyle...
Rating: Summary: Loose Weight without loosing the carbs Review: This is a WONDERFUL cookbook. I ate recipes that were out of this cookbook for 2 weeks and lost 8 pounds. The food is wonderful. Some of the recipes you think "how is this going to taste good" and then you make them and WOW. My favorites are the Quiches and the stuffed cabbage. So easy, tasting and very filling. You really don't even notice that you are eating healthy and the weight just falls off
Rating: Summary: Terrific Resource - all you need for a low-GI lifestyle Review: This is an absolutely outstanding book. The other positive reviewers have already done a good job of explaining why. The introduction section on the benefits of eating low on the glycemic index and how to do it, is extremely well written. It is worth buying the book for this section alone, but it also comes with a bunch of recipes. I thought the book was much more straightforward and clear in its scientific explanations and dietary recommendations regarding the Glycemic Index than the somewhat confusing New Glucose Revolution by Brand-Miller et. al. For those of you trying to learn how to incorporate a healthy low-GI lifestyle, I recommend starting with this book.
Rating: Summary: This book was a very big help Review: This is one of two books that I bought that was really good. I probably bought over 20 diet books for low carbohydrate diets. Most of them were very run of the mill. This one had some good recipes and I just thought was better than the others.
Rating: Summary: Eureka! Review: This is THE book to have if you are spinning your wheels like I was with what exactly to eat as a diabetic. I couldn't figure out why something raised my sugar if it didn't have any sugar at all in it. For example, a Snickers Bar doesn't raise the blood sugar level as much as a cup of split pea soup! Who knew?? It is all so very confusing and frustrating for a newbie diabetic. The Good Carb Cookbook has helped me to understand it all. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It has been worth its weight in gold to me, and I'm sure it will be for you too.
Rating: Summary: I'll have another, please Review: Well done! This book gives a well-written and easy to understand overview of how different carbohydrates result in different physical responses, with implications for weight and health. Then it provides a nice selection of practical, easy-to-prepare recipes comprised of the "good carbohydrates." I was so pleased with the book that I bought copies as gifts for three other people so far - all who have been enthusiastic about it as well. My only complaint is that there were not more vegetarian recipes - but I realize that the book is designed for someone eating a more typical American diet. Nevertheless, there are enough recipes in it that I can use to make it worth it to me.
