Rating: Summary: One of two books that changed my life Review: I bought this book along with THE SOUTH BEACH DIET back in late August. Together, they have changed my life. At 53, I've struggled to some degree with my weight all of my adult life. I was successful on Weight Watchers for awhile, and still have many positive things to say about it. However, when WW changed their program, and the food pyramid changed to lower fat/higher carbohydrate, I began gaining again. No one had ever actually said to me that sugar was bad. Oh yes, I knew that candy and cookies and ice cream were not good for me, but I had no idea how harmful relying primarily on refined carbohydrates could be. I have broken my carbohydrate "addiction," learned to limit my carbs to fresh fruits and whole grains, lost 16 pounds painlessly, and never felt better in my life! If you love carbs and have trouble controlling your weight, these two books are for you.
Rating: Summary: Great book on low carb diet Review: I bought this book and the Insulin Resistance Diet at the same time since I was recently diagnosed with this problem. I found this book much more helpful, exp the tables in back of book listing food items with fat, calories, GI rating, and Carb grams. The recipes are easy and good. The Insulin Resistance Diet was more like a textbook with a good overview of insulin resistance, but it didn't go into much detail concerning the diet itself (other than balance of protein and carbs). Great book for me!
Rating: Summary: This has become our Healthy Eating "Bible" Review: I cannot say enough good things about this book. I wish I could give a copy to everyone I know. Not only are the recipes the most delicious healthy foods we've ever made, but Sandra Woodruff explains the nutritional and health reasons for eating good carbs in simple, easy-to-understand language. She emphasizes moderation. Her recipes are followed by nutritional information, including whether they are extremely low GI, low GI, or moderate GI. The first third of the book is all information you need to know about why traditional fat-free eating isn't making people thinner or healthier, but fatter and unhealthier. For the past 20 years, the food industry has been touting fat-free this and fat-free that..."eat pretzels, gummi bears, eat fat-free, and you'll be fat-free". It's nonsense. Woodruff explains how and why to eat low on the Glycemic Index. She gives you tons of ideas for low GI breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. She includes low GI options for eating out at nearly every possible type of restaurant- Italian, Indian, Thai- you name it. She also gives a few examples of real people, their situations, and how they changed their health by eating low GI. Not only does this book give you sound nutritional advice (the author is a Registered Dietician), but she also includes over 200 phenomenally delicious recipes. Eat wholesome real foods, watch what kinds of fats you cook with, exercise, and you will lose weight. Most importantly, though- YOUR BODY WILL LOVE YOU. And your doctor will be thrilled! My husband, who was already exercising regularly, has lost 20 lbs in 6 weeks just by changing to eating low on the Glycemic Index- "Good Carbs". I have also lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks by changing my diet and including exercise. Changing our diet has giving us so much more energy. We feel fantastic. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book! I researched all the low-carb, no-carb, low-sugar, Zone, Busters, etc... books ... and decided after reading all the information and reviews, to purchase this one. I am so glad I did! You will be too. You owe yourself an energetic, long life. BUY THIS BOOK.

This cookbook makes more sense than anything that requires an "induction phase". I mean, we are talking about food and will power, essentially. The thought of controlling the levels of blood sugar seemed sound and simple. My problem was actually finding the book in a store (I couldn't wait to have it shipped!). Since I have gotten the book, I have tried many recipes and have yet to have one that I will not make again. ALL OF THESE RECIPES ARE KEEPERS! When was the last time you could say that about any cookbook? My husband loves this food. My 2 and 4 year olds love this food! I don't get late night munchie attacks when I use these recipes. The recipes are simple to follow and the FLAVOR is phenominal! I have been cooking a long time and own a lot of cookbooks, but this is the only one that I have told EVERYONE I know about. The fact that I have lost weight while eating the food I prepare is merely icing on the cake!

Rating: Summary: Blood sugar is constant now Review: I had 2 goals this year: to eat more healthily, & to meet more women. Two books have set me straight. This book by Woodruff, and make every girl want you by Reil. I was obese because of too much "bad carb" consumption. I'm also diabetic, which didn't make things any easier. Woodruff's recipes are a godsend. Having these recipes allows me to go beyond my previous diet attempts of just bread and pasta. My one knock is that the first chapter is a bit too scientific for me. Other than that, the book is great. Thanks to Woodruff for explaining the difference between good carbs & bad carbs. Of explaining the perils of making your blood sugar level shoot up, and for explaining what foods make your levels rise, and what foods keep it constant. Most of all, this diet makes me feel good. I no longer have the ups & downs of blood sugar levels, and no longer feel the need to snack unhealthily because my blood sugar levels are low. I feel the best that I have in years!!
Rating: Summary: Results from following this book's advice! Review: I have already written a review of this book here on Amazon (reader from NH). I just wanted to add the "real numbers" results from my husband's blood work after 4 months of following the eating habits prescribed in Woodruff's book. He has had high cholesterol since he was a child. His cholesterol has never been under 200. His doctor was absolutely amazed with his results! After 4 months of eating low-GI, my husband's cholesterol went from 218 to 182. His tryglycerides went from 454 to 99! His HDL and LDL levels, unable to be deciphered before because of the high triglycerides, are in the perfect range. Prior to changing his diet, he had high liver enzyme levels which suggested possible cancer. Now, the levels are all normal. The only change he made was changing his eating to low-GI. He has been exercising 5 days/week for about a year. I highly recommend anyone who is remotely interested in changing their eating habits, buy and try the ideas in this book. You have absolutely nothing to lose but your health! Good luck to everyone!
Rating: Summary: Boring with small print Review: I have read many books on health and nutrition but this one was boring with extremely tiny print. The information is valid, but the way they explained it was a bit technical. I have read the information on low glycemic carbs in other books and it was explained in layman's terms. This book could not hold my interest. Then, when I decided to just turn to the recipes, they were filled with more carbs than I thought they would have. Nothing new, just the same old boring stuff. I returned my copy as I just couldn't get through it. I think I could be more creative in the kitchen without this book.
