Rating: Summary: Bland Review: The recipes are easy to follow and the book is well-organized, but the dishes are B-L-A-N-D. I know this is low-fat cooking, but a good recipe is supposed to fool you - these don't. I say stick to the real butter and whole milk and just eat in moderation - enjoy your life!
Rating: Summary: This is a really great cookbook Review: Even for non-weight watchers these are some really good, useful and tasty recipes. There are alot of recipes (over 500) and great color pictures. The recipres include *re-dos* of some common high fat items ( like sauses, dressings, dips desserts, cream soups) Entrees for poultry, beef pork, lamb, fish shellfish, pasta... its very comprehensive. Even thos there are some ethnic recipes the ingredients required dont seem far out and could be gotten in most grocery stores alot of the time. The only thing i have a bit of trouble with is that the points are calculated for *serving size* but you dont know if that is a cup or a few ounces...or whatever. It makes it a bit hard sometimes to figure out, when cooking for a family, if you will need to double a recipe to feed everyone. but that is really a minor point..... there is also a section on breads where the points seem closer to the diet-breads than the regular breads but look womderful. The dessert section is very good and the sweetner seems to be used is sugar, not a substitute. You could use a substitute yourself... but there seems to be a general emphasis on *real* ingredients..which is nice. The book itself, being plastic spiral bound is VERY nice as it sits flat on a kitchen counter and makes following a recipe directly from the book very easy. It is set up for using the winning point system but also includes other nutritional values (cal, fat,cholesterol,sodium..fiber..protein etc) I can see it being helpful on alot of diets becuase the info is so inculsive. There is a section on nutrition in the beginning and a short explanation of the winning points system. Certainly not as complete as you would get at a WW meeting...but you will be able to see how many points, for your size, you should be eating. And there are 6 pages of general point values. Also very helpful if you dont go to ww or want to substitute in a recipe. This is a very good cook book.
Rating: Summary: Nice book Review: Good cookbook and I am hardly a master chef. Handy recipes with lots of different kinds of food (plus the Points values! yay!) Only minor quibble is that it would be nice if all recipes had photos.
Rating: Summary: Really want to like this one... Review: But wow. what a horribly written cookbook. The pages are MUCH too thin (I found them tearing, esp. when around ANY moisture). Points- instead of being listed UP TOP, they are "buried" (so no quick scanning for a 2 point treat) :( Layout/Design- the index is crummy- and the break-down/sections are a bit too 'wide open'. Typeface is hard to read.....even in good light- for the money could they pretend people are reading this? Really would like a more modern/helpful sectionals. (for example crockpot cooking, one dish meals, brunch, etc...)- instead of the rather lame "chicken" section, which has everything from chicken salad to fried chicken... I also find it annoying that recipes call for low fat with points, but never convert the dish to no fat, with points. I wanted to like this one...I really did- but I find it much easier just to covert OTHER recipes- less frustration...
Rating: Summary: Tasty and good for you! Review: I bought this cookbook a few weeks ago and my husband and I are happily eating our way through it. We haven't found a bad or flavorless recipe yet! Our current favorite is Faux Gumbo followed closely by the Oven-Fried Chicken. All of the recipes use commonly found foods and spices, so there is no hunting for strange items in the store. I highly recommend this cookbook!
Rating: Summary: Great recipes - but need to convert to winning points. Review: The recipes are really great - I've used several at dinner parties and no one even knew they were low fat, low calories. You do have to remember that the points given are for the 123 Success points, not Winning Points - I didnt realize this for awhile so was not counting points correctly when I used some recipes. Other wise there are a wide range of recipes and most are really great!
Rating: Summary: the one cookbook I could not live without Review: This book is a goldmine of great recipies. The vegetable chili, moo shu chicken, chicken enchiladas with corn salad, and raspberry brownies were all so delicious we couldn't believe they were guilt free to eat. I would give up Joy of Cooking and New Basics before I gave up this book because there is such a range of recipies and they range from good to fantastic. The only wishes I have were sample menus or more suggestions on how to pair things - I'd like to make the Turkey Fruit Pilaf but am puzzled as to what vegetable to put it with - and occasionally the book suggests using WAY too many onions as in the Beef Chili. But don't let that deter you from getting this five star cooking book particularly if you are trying to eat healthier. The only question I have is, as this is my first Weight Watchers cookbook and it's new and updated and all - are the other Weight Watchers cookbooks this good?
Rating: Summary: Good, but Not Simply the Best Review: This cookbook is good, but you can tell that it is a littl more dated than the other Weight Watcher Cookbooks. There are some easy to follow recipes and some are REALLY good. I think this book was printed when the POINTS system was just being developed. If you have one of the more recent WW cookbooks, then you can see more of the substitution methods. However, to find some new and tasty recipes, this book is good to have on the shelf!
Rating: Summary: Just recipes Review: It has few fancy pictures or editorials. It is almost exclusively recipes, which is a good thing in my book. I bought the hard cover which seemed more durable. It lays flat on my counter - how convenient. It gives a one or two page summary of the program, so its not a good substitute for the WW program, but it is an excellent enhancement. Really lightens up some old favorites, but not so much so that they are yucky. It leaves in enough fat and calories for flavor, the new weight watchers is about moderation.
Rating: Summary: Great, tasty recipes that are easy to make Review: One of the best cookbooks for those trying to lose weight and then maintain that weight. Easy to follow instructions and lots of pictures to guide you through the process of cooking the meals. Most meals tak eless than 1 hour to make and can freeze a large amount of the recipes. Only 1 setback, though, not enough side dishes. I have owned this book for a year now, and have favorite recipes that my husband & I cook frequently. I am also able to adjust the ingredients if out of stock on items. A recommended cookbook for anyone wanting to try something different.
