Summary: This book has made a real difference in my family's life
Review: I was never much of a cook, but I have always been interested in getting my family to eat healthy foods, and this book has shown me how easy it is to do just that. The 14 foods listed as "Superfoods" are delicious, and the authors include numerous "sidekicks," or foods that offer the same or similar benefits. After just one month of preparing foods using the recommendations in "SuperFoods Rx," everyone in my family has experienced significant health benefits--my husband's cholesterol level plummeted, and lifelong digestive problems have disappeared. Best of all, everyone from ages six to fifty LOVE the meals (one favorite is a stew I invented that contains turkey, carrots, cabbage, canned tomatoes, beans, spinach, onions, cubes of firm tofu and/or whatever else is on hand; I use Goya "cubitos" and seasoning for a delicious broth). Nobody wants sugar cookies anymore, now that we can go to the fridge anytime and enjoy luscious cultured yogurt with blueberries and diced walnuts, fresh watermelon--even some yummy dark chocolate with a pot of green or black tea. The possibilities are endless!!
Diets do not work--they are temporary, often based on absurd principles, and only perpetuate an unhealthy obsession with food. As the authors point out, what is needed is a permanent change for the better in eating habits for the entire family. Considering the obesity crisis in this country, such a sensible and practical approach could not come at a better time.

Summary: Changing Your Life
Review: New genre--the how to change your life book. Some books use exercise, some religion, some work or family--this one discusses foods that will make you healthier, happier and stronger. Superfoods is a great starting point/motivator with excellent nutritional info, clearly and simply presented. My favorite book about life change (in another category) is "I Sleep At Red Lights: A True Story of Life After Triplets," by Bruce Stockler. It's about one man who finds out his kids are more important than his job, money or career dreams--hilarious, honest and insightful. And don't forget "Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance."

Summary: Changed my life
Review: Reading this book has caused me to overhaul my diet and what i eat. I thought I was doing pretty good but it turns out my food choices could be literally setting me up for a future of bad heatlh, chronic illness, and cancer.

By giving up my coffee habit I realized having that wired up feeling all day clouded my concentration. Did you know one cup of joe raises your blood pressure by 14%! Fortunately for me I was able to find a wonderful tasting replacement made from soyabeans. You brew like coffee and it even helps lower my cholesterol. I found it online at www.S o y c o f f e e.c o m. Gaining this understanding will effect every move you make from this point on and will bring with it the necessity to share it.

I have been following Dr. Pratt's book now for about two weeks and I feel like a million dollars, I sleep better, have more energy, and I want to thank Dr. Pratt for showing me an all inclusive, no catches, DELICIOUS way to take care of myself today and in the future.

Summary: SUPER INFORMATIVE
Review: SuperFoods Rx is based on "strong academic science and peer-reviewed research clinical trials." And it isn't just a food book. The other subjects covered are "exercise, stress management, faith, friendship, laughter, daydreaming, sleep, and other elements necessary for a longstanding, healthy life." The recipes are tasty and the book itself is easy to comprehend. The authors include some interesting things in the book such as, "Consumer alerts" which prompt consumers to speak out on things like "less sodium in canned fish," or "alert manufacturers to produce vitamin C supplements with added bioflavonoids in 100- to 250 milligram amounts." There is also the "Sidekicks" list at the first of each chapter. If you don't like spinach or any of the other fourteen superfoods, they recommend a list of substitutes for each. It looks like they thought of everything - health, body, mind and spirit. It's a comprehensive nutritional guide worth looking into that's for sure!

Summary: Thank you Steven Pratt!
Review: Superfoods Rx is, quite simply, the best health and nutrition book I have ever read. It has truly revolutionized my relationship to food. What makes it so terrific is how flexible one can be and still follow author Steven Pratt's basic nutrition guidelines. Pratt espouses the benefits of fourteen "Superfoods"--Beans, Blueberries, Broccoli, Oats, Oranges, Pumpkin, Salmon, Soy, Spinach, Tea, Tomatoes, Turkey, Walnuts, and Yogurt--around which one can build a healthy, modern diet. These foods are not the only healthy foods; Pratt includes a large number of "sidekick" foods that have similar properties. The genius of the superfoods model of nutrition is that these foods form a framework around which anyone can build a healthy diet to suit their own personal tastes. The possibilies for healthy improvisation are endless, and all the foods are familiar, readily available, and inexpensive. And since Pratt does not prescribe any particular diet, only advocating certain very healthy foods, there is no calorie counting and no regimen to follow, other than common sense.

I am finally able to impliment a healthy eating plan, in large part because this book has freed me from "high maintainance" diets. Pratt certainly prefers fresh, whole foods, but he points out that "whole" is more important than "fresh". He consistently points to foods that are perfectly healthful in canned or frozen form, which is a godsend to a single, young, lazy male such as myself. I will never spend more than 15 minutes (including prep and cleanup) making any meal, so I could not follow any plan otherwise.

Canned pumpkin has been a real discovery for me. This stuff is so easy to cook with; I just toss a couple of spoonfuls of it into things like canned, ready to heat soup as a fortifier. It is also extremely filling; you will never feel hungry after a meal with pumpkin in it. My daily breakfast is now a mix of yogurt, pumpkin, wheat germ, and blueberries--just toss it all in a bowl and stir. Delicious!

I love this book so much, the only complaint I can make is, MORE! I want more secondary materials, maybe a small visual aid, like a poster, to stick to my fridge. I want simple, accessible ways to prepare and eat these foods, as well as a simple chart to keep me familiar with the most important nutritional properties of each. Pratt provides substantial nutrional tables at the end of the book, but who can remember the amount of selenium in tuna in the normal flow of daily life? What's needed is not more science, but more access.

Thank you Steven Pratt for this life-changing book!

Summary: mostly good advice
Review: The book emphasizes eating a "whole foods diet." That involves getting your vitamins from food rather than supplements, consuming much more fiber than the average american diet does. I disagree with a 3 of the superfoods (salmon, turkey and yogurt). It's possible to get your Omega-3 FAs from non-fish sources. Between flax, soy, walnuts and taking a vegetarian DHA supplement, eating fat and cholesterol-laden fish or taking a fish oil capsule isnt necessary. Wild salmon get it from eating the phytoplankton, so why can't we? Also, why is turkey a superfood? The author says it's a good source of protein, low in saturated fat (compared to other animal foods, I suppose). It's also full of cholesterol, even the leanest turkey breast. Yogurt is a good source of calcium and active cultures, says the author. Well, many of the other superfoods are better sources of calcium than yogurt. And you can get active cultures from Cultured Soy Yogurt, which is often fortified with calcium. Soy is it's own category of superfoods, so why advocate dairy yogurt when cultured soy is available, delicious and nutritious? I think superfoods should not only provide super nutrition, but be super for the environment. All the other 11 Superfoods in this book are plant foods, and for that I commend the author. If everyone in America switched to this diet, I'm sure their health and the health of the environment would greatly improve. However, I don't think salmon, turkey and yogurt really need to be on the list with the Superfoods.

I saw this book on a shelf with other diet books being promoted, I suppose, for New Year's Resolution ideas. It was the only book among dozens that wasn't promoting the current fad of low-carb, meat-heavy diets.

I also recommend two other books: "The Food Revolution" and "The Okinawa Program."

Summary: It works wonders!
Review: The proof is in the pudding as it were - my total cholesterol and Direct LDL Cholesterol dropped over 50 points each and triglycerides dropped over 30 points. Blood pressure readings are now, on average 117/64. I went from a high cardiac risk to no cardiac risk. As a diabetic, I was thrilled to see my A1c drop 3/10 in 6 months and my fasting glucose was stabilized.

If this was not enough proof, please do not laugh, but I put my feather picking 17 year old parrot on superfoods and she now has beautiful feather growth where she never did before. Totally attributable to the superfoods lifestyle!

This book is literally a life-saver. Thank you Dr. Pratt for an informative and results oriented book.
